A big thank you to all those who contributed to the South

Congratulations to

detailed breakdown of the costs and
coverage at Thursday’s meeting.
I have yet to receive the final

these arrive the final financial
costs of the weekend cannot be
reported. I hope to have this for the
November meeting.

seems to have proved a successful
alternative to a pub meal.
It was good to see a number of
familiar faces that we haven't seen
for sometime calling in over the week-
end.
Lester and Gary have suggested
they bring the shop down one Sunday in
November. Brent has said the Band
Rooms would be available for us to use
again, so it simply looks like
choosing a date that works for people.
More about this on Thursday night.

Mosquito
FB.VI
MM417 EG¤T
Of No. 487 (New Zealand) Squadron,
RAF, based at Hunsdon, in February
1944.
On 1 June 1943, No. 487 Squadron, then
equipped with Venturas, left Bomber
Command to become part of the newly-
formed Second Tactical Air Force. In
August - September 1943 the squadron
re-equipped with Mosquito FB Mk. Vis
which it flew until the war’s end.
No. 487’s first operational sortie was
on 12 October 1943, when 12 aircraft,
led by the station commander Group
Captain P.C. Pickard, bombed the power
stationat Point Chateau, about 30
miles northwest of Nantes.
The squadron went on to achieve fame
for its daylight precision bombing
attacks, notably:
The Amiens Prison Raid (18
February 1944)
The Gestapo HQ Raid, Aarhus,
Denmark (31 October 1944)
The Shellhaus Raid, Copenhagen
(21 March 1945)
MM417, however, was not the ‘T’ that
took part in the Amiens Prison Raid
(it was HX982). This aircraft was
part of a three aircraft formation put
up specially for a Press visit on 29
February 1944 at Hundson.
While being flown in an attack on the
Les Hayes V-1 site on 26 March, MM417
was hit by flak and, upon return to
base, was written off after a heavy
landing. It was being flown on this
occasion by the squadron commander,
Wing Commander I.S. Smith.
command of RAF Predannack.

FB.XVIII NT224 ‘E’
Of No. 248 Squadron RAF, based at
Portreath, England in June 1944. It
was delivered to the Squadron on 2
June 1944 and was shot down by enemy
fighters over Norway on 7 December
1944.
On 10 May 1943, it was decided to
equip 30 Mosquito Mk.VIs with a 6-
pounder Mollins anti-tank gun, when it
was discovered that Coastal Command’s
strike aircraft were being out-gunned
by their main quarry - German U-boats
returning to their bases in the Bay of
Biscay ports.
No. 248 Squadron commenced operations
with two Mk. XVIIIs on 24 October
1943. These were flown alongside the
unit’s Beaufighters until replaced by
Mosquito FB.VIs in mid-December.
On D-Day, No. 248 Squadron flew five
operations between 04:15 and 22:15
hours. Their task was threefold;
prevention of U-boats attacking the
invasion fleet, the blockading of the
Biscay and Channel Ports and covering
air-strike forces.
On 26 October 1944, the Squadron’s
aircraft fired rocket projectiles for
the first time and for the remainder
of their war No. 248 used these
effectively against enemy shipping
along the coastline from the Norwegian
Fiords to the Danish German and Dutch
coast further south.
On 7 December, 25 Mosquitos from the
Banff Strike Wing, along with 40
Beaufighters of the Dallachy Wing,
protected by No.315 Squadron Mustangs,
were led to the Norwegian coast by
Squadron Leader Barnes of No. 235
Squadron. Near Gossen, the Mustangs
were engaged by about 20 Fw190s and
Bf109s. In the ensuing battle No. 315
Squadron claimed 4 Bf109s and 2 Fw190s
collided. Two Mosquitos, one of which
was NT224, a Beaufighter and a Mustang
failed to return.
