Countering illegal logging in Papua hand-in-hand

2 to 3 November,

UNODC

conducted a

series of mee ngs

with community

leaders and law

enforcers in

Jayapura, Papua. These mee ngs were conducted

under a Norwegian government supported project

“Countering Illegal Logging and its Linkage between

Forest Crimes and Corrup on.”

The fi rst mee ng engaged all community leaders

living in the area of Jayapura and owners of Cyclops

conserva on area in a one-day workshop to iden fy

common problems they faced and iden fy poten al

solu ons.

The second event was a coordina on mee ng

between Police and the Forest and Conserva on

Department facilitated by UNODC. This was

a ended by representa ves of the two ins tu ons

who established an agenda in harmony with

laws pertaining to illegal encroachments and

illegal logging. Recommenda ons were made to

immediately form a working group of law enforcers,

community leaders and civil society organiza ons to

con nue coordinated an -illegal logging eff orts.

UNODC to assist witness protec on enforcement

24 November to 2 December, In its eff ort to help

the government of Indonesia on enforcing the

rule of law UNODC Indonesia is building a close

rela onship with the newly established Witness

and Vic m Protec on Agency (LPSK) of Indonesia.

To show its support, UNODC called upon the

exper se of James Van Roekel, a UNODC expert

on witness protec on from Vienna, to work with

the LPSK in analyzing the Agency’s needs and

expecta ons to build itself as a stronger and

credible ins tu on. Mr. Van Roekel’s mission

in Indonesia lasted for two weeks, whereby he

worked closely with the LPSK to iden fy needs

and wants, and addressed how UNODC could

strategically provide assistance.

Later, Mr. Van Roekel a ended the Regional

Witness Protec on Seminar hosted by the LPSK

in Bali. LPSK also organised in Jakarta a book

launching of the UNODC’s ‘Best Prac ces in

Witness Protec on’ which was translated into

Bahasa Indonesia.

Indonesia hosts workshop in partnership with UNODC

3 to 5 November,

The Government

of Indonesia and

the United Na ons

Counter-Terrorism

Implementa on

Task Force hosted

a workshop on the Regional Implementa on of

the United Na ons Global Counter-Terrorism

Strategy in South-East Asia in Bali. In his opening

remarks, Vice-Foreign Minister Triyono Wibowo

stressed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening

the counter-terrorism programme through

bolstering legal and law enforcement structures,

increasing intelligence sharing with the Associa on

of Southeast Asian Na ons (ASEAN) countries

and enhancing capacity-building eff orts with

partnering countries.

Workshop par cipants engaged in focused

discussion of na onal and regional perspec ves

concerning the eff ec ve implementa on of the

United Na ons Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy

and formulated ac on-oriented conclusions.

UNODC contributes to REDD+ Na onal Strategy dra ing

2 to 3 November,

A mee ng en tled

“Interna onal

Expert

Consulta on

Mee ng on

REDD+ Na onal

Strategy” was held in Nusa Dua, Bali. The mee ng

was aimed at gathering in-depth knowledge

and understanding about the REDD+ issues and

how to strengthen the REDD+ na onal strategy

in Indonesia. UNODC advocated that good

governance and an -corrup on measures should

be included in the REDD+ Na onal Strategy.

UNODC is commi ed to assis ng the REDD+

project implementa on in Indonesia, especially in

addressing corrup on and fraud as well as illegal

logging which it views as signifi cant hurdles to

progress in this area.
