Vision and Mission

Cedar Rapids City Market, Inc., with the encouragement of the city of Cedar Rapids, was established as a 501(c) (3) non-profit to provide the leadership and to become the catalyst for developing a year-round market promoting healthy behaviors, community culture, and economic development following the 2008 flood. Its mission is focused on six main areas:

Create new small business and job opportunities for food producers and entrepreneurs.

Encourage revitalization and redevelopment of a flood-devastated part of the greater Cedar Rapids downtown following the 2008 flood.

Provide a venue that encourages an active, healthy lifestyle.

Create a central meeting place for community residents and visitors.

Promote increased regional agricultural activity.

Environmental Stewardship - Operate Market facilities that are energy and resource efficient by implementing processes for recycling, composting, use of alternative energy and education.

Market Research

In September of 2009, the CRCM Board contracted with non-profit consulting firm Project for Public Spaces (PPS) to estimate the market demand for the NewBo City Market enterprise. Some Highlights:

Fresh food sales potential for the Market at $2.1 million ($40,000/week) or about $136 per gross square foot.

Adding prepared food takes those sales to $3 million.

The NewBo City Market estimates attracting 10-15% of the DDFM visits per month with an average sale of $30.

Weekly estimated attendance ranges from 1500 off-peak to 3500 during peak times.

A Few Definitions

Anchor Vendors: The full-time, permanently installed, annual-lease tenants in the Southeast end of the Market Hall.

Seasonal Vendors: The people who lease stalls on a daily or seasonal basis, who set up and tear down their booths each day in the Flex Space or Market Yard.

Flex Space: The center-to-northwest portion of the Market Hall that can be used for seasonal vendors and for special events.

A Few Definitions

The Kirkwood Teaching Kitchen: Operated by Kirkwood Community College, the Kitchen is used by them for continuing ed. Classes during the week, and by NewBo City Market (under Kurt’s management), for classes on evenings and weekends.

The Learning Garden: Working title for the vegetable garden, living wall, composter and water catchment located at the north corner of the Market Yard.

A Few Definitions

Market Yard: An outdoor area in front of hall will be the space that vendors will use from May to October for outdoor markets. Some (not all) of the space is designed to allow vendors to pull in with their trucks and sell off the back of their vehicles. Approximately 44 vendors can be accommodated in the Market Yard.

Market Square:  Abutting the corner of 12th Avenue and 3rd Street is the Market Square. The central meeting place and congregating area for visitors to the NewBo City Market and the New Bohemia arts/entertainment district, the Square will have additional vending spaces.  The Market Square will be the home to a playground, concerts, plays, sports functions and other outdoor events.

A Few Definitions

Farmers’ Market: A farmers’ market is a space where farmers, food artisans, and sometimes crafters or even restaurants set up temporary booths to sell their wares and take them down each day.

Public Market: A public market is comprised of grocery, produce, meat, fish, dairy, flowers, coffee, etc. in built-in booths that are kept in place. A public market is administered more like a shopping mall than like a farmers’ market.

NewBo City Market is a Public Market, with additional farmer’s market components.

Applying to be an Anchor Vendor

Preference for Anchor vendors will be given to Iowa owned businesses. Anchor space is limited to 40 stalls, which we estimate will be divided among 20-25 vendors. The basis for selecting vendors includes the following criteria:

Type and quality of product offered, with preference given to those who have made a commitment to providing fresh food from healthful ingredients, locally sourced whenever feasible.

Experience of the merchant and ability to execute on plan.

Uniqueness of displays, signage and booth presentation, including quality of fixtures and equipment.

Applying to be an Anchor Vendor

Level of on-site preparation or production

Willingness to comply with Market rules and participate in Market events and promotions

Commitment to environmentally friendly practices such as alternatives to prepackaged items in plastic wrappers, using containers and bottles that are compostable, participating in NewBo City Market’s recycling and composting programs, etc.

A commitment to food accessibility and fair, reasonable prices, in an effort to comply with NewBo City Market’s mission to serve the food desert (as defined by the USDA) in Oakhill/Jackson, downtown, and adjacent neighborhoods.

Indoor, canopied and lawn booths may be rented on a day or seasonal basis.

The preferred vendors at the NewBo Farmers Market will be Iowa farmers who grow produce or animals for food items.

Product diversity will be encouraged by giving special preference to those farmers who grow and sell unique items that add to the variety that can be obtained.

Farmer’s market participants must understand that inside the NewBo City Market Hall not all products for sale will be locally grown.
