The future of village poultry production

• What are small-scale and village poultry production systems?

• Why should we care about village poultry production?

• What are the development objectives for village poultry production?

• What strategies, options and technologies have contributed to achieving these objectives?

• What are the lessons learned?

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Improving village poultry production

• Why care about village poultry production?

• What to achieve

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

• Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

• Achieve universal primary education

• Promote gender equality and empower women

• Reduce child mortality

• Improve maternal health

• Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases

• Ensure environmental sustainability

• Develop a global partnership for development

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Health care and vaccination

• Appropriate vaccine and distribution mechanisms

• Economic sustainability based on commercialization

• Support and coordination by relevant agencies

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Management and Feeding

• Protecting young and adult birds from losses.

• Improving feeding techniques

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Mini hatcheries

• Availability of healthy DOC is key for improvement of the system

• In remote locations DOC production may be required on site

• A new „sand model“ has been developed in Bangladesh

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Genetic improvement

• Use of commercial poultry genotypes

• Selection within the local populations

• Cross-breeding for village conditions either with structured or unstructured programmes

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Genetic improvement –Two cases

• Crossbreeding of the Sonali in Bangladesh– 2010 about 60

hatcheries, 27% of broiler, 81% layer population (150 mil.)

• Kuroiler by Kegg farms in India– In India > 20 Million

birds distributed to 1mil. households

– Programmes in South Asia, Uganda, Ethiopia

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Training

• Extensive training is required– Technical issues– Marketing and

financial issues

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Networking

• Exchange of information and experiences

– WPSA– International Network for

Family Poultry Development (INFPD)

– Internaltional Rural Pouiltry Centre (IRPC) of KYEEMA foundation

– South Asia Pro-poor Policy Programme

– Community of Practice for Pro-Poor Livestock Development (CoP)

Second Global AgriKnowledge Share Fair,IFAD, Rome, 28 September, 11.00-12.00

Smallholder Poultry Development Programme

• Joint implementation of INFPD-KYEEMA-FAO-IFAD

• Training of Associate Poultry Advisers (APA)

• Knowledge management– Family Poultry

Communications – INFPD website– e-conferences

• Decision Tools for Family Poultry Development

• Developing the Network

Lessons learned from programmes

• Due consideration of main motivations and knowledge of producers, and opportunities for reliable delivery of improved services and inputs.

• The likelihood of success is higher with a comprehensive approach that includes all technical aspects but also motivation, group organization and intensive “hands-on” training in poultry management.

• Support with marketing of products is important for quick adoption and disseminating of innovative and adapted technologies.
