NEW MEXICO LIONS EYE FOUNDATION
Greetings to all New Mexico Lions I am glad that you have chosen to give me the opportunity to serve as the president of this prestigious foundation. I accept the position and pledge to do all in my power to serve as needed this coming year. I will listen to all suggestions and solicit the same from all Lions throughout the state. We are proceeding with the UNM project and I want to assure all Lions that it is a very worthwhile endeavor, worthy of our participation. Please be assured that the financial brunt of this project will come from without Lionism not from within. We are being given access to several avenues of fundraising from throughout the general public. Many Lions are afraid that we are being asked to come up with too much money. That money will not come from the Lions Clubs of New Mexico. It will come from private fund raising efforts. If you have any questions about this project please feel free to contact Lion Jeff Kriz as he continues to spearhead this project. You may contact me as well at any time. Lion Bernie Holzapfel will step down as Secretary this year and Lion Bryson McCool will assume those responsibilities. PDG Ruben Vigil will remain as Treasurer and Lion Lucky Sells has accepted the position of Vice President. Although we are sad to see some of these Lions step down we are glad to see others stepping up to fill those positions. We look forward to watching our foundation grow and expand its activities throughout the state. I wish to make a special appeal to all Lions this year to serve as drivers. You can serve as little or as much as you can, but please volunteer. I am currently the only full time driver for the Eye Van and this cannot continue. I wish to move on to other avenues of service but cannot do so at the time because of the time my driving duties take. Please help us out this year. We need you. We have recently updated the Eye Van with new equipment. We replaced the slit lamp and chin rest. We also put in a new medical post lamp. The NM Lions Eye Foundation looks forward to expanding our service throughout the state this year. We all look forward to your help.
Lion Juan R. Lucero President, NM Lions Eye Foundation.

NEW MEXICO LIONS CRANE READING FOUNDATION
July 1, 2009 George Mulholland 2900 Karen Drive Las Cruces, NM 88001 Dear Lions of New Mexico: It has been an honor serving as the President of the NM Lions Crane Reading Foundation (NMLCRF) these past four years and I am looking forward to serving in that capacity during 2009-2010. As most of you are aware, the mission for the New Mexico Lions Crane Reading Foundation (NMLCRF) is to have every student in New Mexico reading and writing proficiently. This means that by second grade every student should be reading at least 200 words per minute with good comprehension and be able to write legibly. While good progress is being made, we need more volunteer help if this goal is to be achieved in the near future. If you would like to volunteer, please contact any of the officers and they will give you details on how you can become involved. The reading program is an eight component integrated program that combines the latest computer technology with several other important activities. These include 1) desk height adjustment; 2) use of templates; 3) eye examinations and prescription lenses; 4) Gross motor skill development; 5) reading practice using computer programs; 6) allergy management; 7) writing composition; and 8) proper placement and remediation of new students. The computer programs are available for a one year evaluation period from McComas and Associates, the distributors in New Mexico. The PediaVision Photoscreener, a state of the art eye screening instrument, is our instrument of choice for screening. It is ideal for Head Start and K-12 students. Complete details of the program and supporting references are given in the books Reading Problems Resolved and Lions Crane Literacy Program Handbook by Allen and Virginia Crane. For those interested in obtaining a copy of either text, please contact any NMLCRF officer and we will make arrangements to have a copy sent to you. Information for the Pedia Vision Photoscreener can be found at their web site www.pediavision.com. The past year was very busy and productive. Notable successes include 1) the Reading Lab located at the Character Kids Dream Center in Las Cruces is fully operational and several classes were conducted during fall 2008 and Spring 2009. Also during this past summer, Allen and Virginia Crane mentored over 75 students in our second annual Summer Reading Camp; 2) introduced and/or maintained all or parts of the program in over 40 schools in New Mexico; 3) Conducted eye screenings and eye examinations at Gadsden High School (eyeglasses to over 100 students), at the Hatch Schools Administration Building (eyeglasses to over 35 students), and at the Dream Center (eyeglasses to over 30 students). We have received permission from the Mesilla Board of Trustees to organize an eye screening, eye examination facility and Reading Laboratory at the Mesilla Community Center. We hope to have this facility operational by spring 2010. An eye screening using the Pedia Vision Photoscreener will be conducted at the Mesilla Community Center on June 26, 2009. The Dream Center Reading Lab has evolved into both a classroom and a demonstration center where educators, parents, and other interested persons can see the program in action Monday
24
through Thursday during the school year and for special programs during the summer months. On Fridays and Saturdays, the reading center is used as a Training Center and Certification Center for educators, parents, Lions, and others to become certified in the NMLCRF approach to literacy. The goal of these efforts is to demonstrate the value of the Reading Program and lead schools to adopt the program. Several nice honors were bestowed upon Lions Allen and Virginia Crane The first one was by the NM House during the last legislative session. Representative Jeff Steinborn introduced House Memorial 98 which states
“Lauding Allen and Virginia Crane and Requesting The Public Education Department To Consider The Adoption Of The Vision And Reading Techniques Developed By The Cranes To Improve Reading For Children In Kindergarten Through Twelfth Grade”.
The Memorial was passed by the House and will be introduced to the Senate during the next legislative session. This is an honor that should make all Lions proud. Any Lion desiring a copy of House Memorial 98 please contact me and I will forward one to you. The second award was the Hap Beyer Award presented to them by PDG Kitty Callender at the recent State Convention.
Parts of the NMLC Reading Program are used by over forty schools in New Mexico. The program works for kindergarten through high school to adults. At Valley View Elementary in Las Cruces, 73 out of 75 first graders are reading and writing proficiently. At Alamogordo High School and Gadsden High School special education students are gaining one to five years per semester in reading. Eight of 53 Alamogordo High School special education students are reading 750 words per minute at their grade level with good comprehension. At Gadsden High School, 12 students made 8 years gain in reading in one semester. Even greater gains can be made when the whole program is used. The grant writing effort, under the direction of Lion Eldon Steelman, has been successful this past year. The NMLCRF has received grants from El Paso Electric, Wal-Mart, and several Lions Clubs throughout the state. Funds from these grants are used to pay an optometrist to conduct eye exams on site at the Gadsden School District, the Hatch School System, and the Dream Center. Eye glasses are also provided to students needing them. The officers and directors of the New Mexico Lions Crane Reading Foundation look forward to working with Lions Clubs throughout the state as we strive to attain our goal of having New Mexico schools rated among the top ten states in reading proficiency. In Lionism,
George Mulholland

New Mexico Lions Operation KidSight
Dear MD40 Lions: The NM Lions Operation KidSight (NMLOKS) Project has had a great year with many Clubs in NM adopting it as one of their major community service projects. NMLOKS is now operational in the Albuquerque area, Los Alamos, Espanola, Taos County, Portales, Las Vegas, Deming, Silver City, Otero County, Lincoln County, Carlsbad, and Artesia. Programs are in the process of starting in Lea County, Farmington, Window Rock, and Las Cruces.
NMLOKS is currently applying for a $150,000 LCIF Core 4 grant that will be used to establish a NMLOKS Coordinator with a central office in Albuquerque. The Coordinator will be responsible for handling the follow-up of referred children (i.e., children who do not pass the screening conducted by Lions).
NMLOKS is a great project that is helping to ensure that young children who have a vision problem (which normally would go undetected if not screened by NM Lions) are seen by an eye professional for a full eye exam and receive treatment (e.g., glasses) if required. We extend an invitation to your Club to join NMLOKS if it is currently not active in your community.
In Lionism,
The NMLOKS Executive Committee Chuck Galusha, Co-Chair Bill Waugh, Co-Chair Bryson McCool, Sec./Treas. 913 Bakers Place 414 Camino de 311 E. NM Special Olympics – LCI Opening Eyes Program
Special Olympics Oath
"Let me win, but if I cannot, let me be brave in the attempt" The Lions Clubs International Special Olympics Opening Eyes program began in 2001 with an ambitious initiative funded by Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) through a Core 4 grant. Total funding is now 9.3 million dollars and extends through 2009. Together, the two organizations are dedicated to serving those in need; the combined efforts help a population whose needs are so often overlooked. Special Olympics is an international sports program offering year-round competitions for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Opening Eyes vision screenings take place at select Special Olympics sporting events worldwide. In New Mexico, screenings have been held in Albuquerque since 2001, Las Cruces since 2003 and Farmington since 2005. Volunteer Lions help with the registration, color vision testing, depth perception testing, near and far acuity testing and the distribution of prescription eyeglasses, protective sports goggles and sunglasses for athletes. Through the screenings of 2008, over 2500 Special Olympics athletes have been screened by New Mexico Lions. Worldwide screenings were over 150,000. Research has shown that among Special Olympics athletes, 68 percent have not had an eye examination in three years, 37 percent are in need of eyeglasses and 18 percent wear clinically incorrect eyeglasses. More than eight thousand Lions Clubs volunteers, worldwide, have offered their time and talents in a team effort, demonstrating the motto "We Serve." New Mexico Lions can be proud of our participation in this effort to serve the disadvantaged. Gordon R. Post, PID MD-40 Special Olympics Chairman Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes Program

DG Rosa Doporto PO Box 521 Lovington, NM 88260 575-390-8318 (C) 575-396-7431 (H) rosadee06@windstream.net
July 2009 Dear Lions of D40S, Let me start by expressing my appreciation to you for allowing me to be your D40S District Governor. I want to thank the incoming officers of the cabinet, each club and every Lion of D40S for your service to LIONS, the greatest humanitarian organization in the world. I have often stated that I need all of you to stand by me and I want to stress that again. I’m the DG but without you, the D40S Lions, I cannot succeed nor can the District succeed. Let’s all work together to make things happen in a positive manner. To accomplish this, I ask each of you to help me create an atmosphere of unity and service to each other and our local clubs as well as community, state and international organizations.
This year brings with it the same challenges as in the past; declining membership, loss of clubs and lack of participation plus a new one, which is the poor economy of our state and nation. We can sit back and use all the excuses mentioned or we can stand up and MOVE TO GROW! I choose the latter. Let us strive to bring enthusiasm to our meeting and projects. Let’s try new fresh ideas and refrain from the “that’s the way it’s always been done” syndrome. I was asked to set goals for the year, membership, clubs, etc. and I pondered over this assignment. Of course I want new members, new clubs, new projects, and more fund raisers, but I’d rather keep our existing members and clubs healthy and doing great things for our communities. If we do this, I believe strongly that the numbers will grow. Yes, I completed the assignment as required stating that retaining our membership and clubs was my priority.
Last year was a year of revelation for me. I attended meetings that revealed just what a tremendous challenge lies ahead for us. I found out that the paperwork is going to be unending and that the deadlines are unforgiving. Also, that the traveling is going to be long and overnight stays a must. But I took the oath and I will do everything within my being to serve YOU, the D40S LIONS, in the capacity of your District Governor. Let’s have a great year of LIONISM, but don’t forget to have fun!
In closing, I’d like to leave you with this thought. I attended the Lions International Convention in Minneapolis, July 1 – 10, and I experienced some awesome moments, such as seeing Lions from all over the world coming together in Lionism, Gen. Colin Powell delivering a superb speech and the Beach Boys’ concert. But when a little 7 year old boy, Cross, came to the stage with his mom and said his glasses were magic, his mom turned to the audience and said “you LIONS are magic” thanks to a eye screening done by Lions at his daycare. It was then that I thought my heart would burst as did my tears.
I’m proud to be a LION! How about you? MOVE TO GROW!!!!
Lions Roar,
DG Rosa T. Doporto, D40S

The Melvin Jones Fellowship Award
The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the backbone of LCIF, providing 70 percent of the foundation's revenue. A recognition of humanitarian work, an MJF is awarded to those who donate $1,000 to LCIF or to people for whom a donation was made by others. Melvin Jones Fellows receive an attractive lapel pin, a plaque and a congratulatory letter.
Melvin Jones Fellows who make additional $1,000 donations to LCIF, or in whose name $1,000 donations are made, become part of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Progressive program. Progressive Melvin Jones Fellows are awarded a new lapel pin and congratulatory letter for each subsequent $1,000 donation. (The first lapel pin is a one-diamond yellow gold pin. For each $1,000 donation thereafter another diamond is added to the pin.)
To apply for a fellowship, complete the MJF Application form (LCIF-42M). For the recognitions available, download the LCIF Recognition Programs form (LCIF-42R). Contributions can be made by individuals (including non-Lions), clubs, or districts. Contributions can be made in one sum, or in installments of a minimum of $100 over a five-year period. It is possible to make a donation and choose the MJF recipient later. Write "Melvin Jones Fellow to be named later" on the check or bank draft.
When an individual's or group of individuals' personal donation(s) are accumulated for a club's use to select a Melvin Jones Fellowship recipient, LCIF needs the signed consent of the donors. When a club's donation(s) are accumulated for a fellowship recipient to be selected by the district, LCIF needs the signed consent of the club. Please include such documentation with the completed MJF application that is sent to LCIF Donor & Financial Services.
Melvin Jones Fellows are honored each year at the Melvin Jones Fellow Luncheon on Thursday during the International Convention. The luncheon also typically includes a presentation of awards to 100 percent Melvin Jones clubs and to individuals who have supported LCIF and the showing of a LCIF video.
MJF FAQs:

• The MJF luncheon began in 1984 and has been held at each convention since
• All MJFs are invited to the annual luncheon and their names are on a rotating computer list of donors in the MJF room at International Headquarters

Oh Heavenly Father
We thank Thee for food and Remember the hungry.
We thank Thee for health and Remember the sick.
We thank Thee for friends and Remember the friendless.
We thank Thee for freedom and remember the enslaved.
May these remembrances stir us to Service, that Thy gifts to us
May be used for others.

Where Lions meet, be present, Lord. Weld our hearts in one accord.
To do Thy will, Lord Make us strong, to aid the weak
and right the wrong.
Lions Pledge
I pledge allegiance to my country and to the cause of peace throughout the world.
I believe in the principles of Lionism as contained in the Lions Code of Ethics.
I am proud to be a Lion dedicated to the service of others.

Lions Code of Ethics
To show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious applications to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.
To seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my self respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.
To remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another’s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and be true to myself.
Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.
To holds friendship as an ends not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.
Always bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means.
To aid others by giving sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.
To be careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; build up and not destroy.
Lions Objectives To create and foster a spirit of understanding among peoples of the world.
To promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.
To take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.
To unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.
To provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.
To encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors.
