El Belén es una tradición muy bonita.
Our Nativity scenes are a very
nice tradition.
•This is traditionally the most important decoration in houses and towns.•They try to recreate the life in villages at the time Jesus was born.•The sizes of these nativity scenes can vary enormously.

•It is celebrated in the morning, and everybody is listening to it on the radio, watching it on tv… It’s very exciting. •First introduced in 1812.•The biggest prize is called “El gordo” (The fat one)•Children from San Ildefonso School take out the balls from these lottery drums, with a special tune.•This day is associated with the beggining of Christmas in Spain.
•Se celebra por la mañana y todo el mundo lo escucha por la radio o lo ve por televisión. Es muy emocionante. •Se celebró por primera vez en 1812.•Al premio mayor se le llama “El gordo”.•Los niños de San Ildefonso extraen las bolas de los bombos y cantan los números con una cantinela especial.•En España, este día se asocia con el comienzo de la Navidad.

Recuerda la muerte de los santos inocentes en Belén. La celebración es parecida al April folls’
day británico.
It conmemorates the massacre of the holy
innocents in Bethlehem.Nowadays it is celebrated like April fools’ day in the
UK.

Mucha gente cena en casa y luego sale de
fiesta.Some people have dinner at
home and then go out to parties.
Otros van de cotillón. La mayor parte siguen las
campanadas de la Puerta del Sol del Madrid.
Some others go to restaurant parties.
Almost everybody listen to the 12 clock strokes of the Puerta del Sol of
Madrid.

Nochevieja: las uvas (New Year’s Eve, the grapes)
Tomamos 12 uvas (una por
campanada) con el fin de atraer suerte para el nuevo año.
Brindamos con sidra o cava.
We eat 12 grapes (one per chime) to bring
good luck for the new year.
We have a toast with cyder or “cava”
(sparkling Spanish wine.
Por fin llegan los regalos.
Finally the presents arrive.

It’s a parade on the 5th December evening. After the parade children pulish their shoes and put them at the balcony. Then they go to bed early. We leave something to eat and drink for the Three Kings and their camels.
Es un desfile la tarde del 5 de diciembre. Después del desfile los niños limpian los zapatos y los dejan en el balcón. Luego se acuestan temprano. Solemos dejar algo para comer y beber para los Reyes y sus camellos.

Children go back to school on January 8th… and the sales start.
Los niños vuelven al colegio el 8 de
enero… y empiezan las
rebajas.
