㉔Daisen-Oki National ParkDesignation: 1936/02/01

This park embraces a mountainous area from Mt.Hiruzen to Mt. Daisen (1,729m), the highest peakin the Chugoku district. The park also features theOki Archipelago, the Shimane Peninsula and Mt.Sanbe. Mt. Daisen has precipitous cliffs, and OkiArchipelago has bluffs and caves eroded by sea-water.

㉗Unzen-Amakusa National ParkDesignation: 1934/03/16

This park is located in the middle of the ShimabaraPeninsula, and the islands of Amakusa. The Unzenarea lies in the hillside of Mt. Fugen, which isfamous for the volcanic activity which occurred in1990. The Unzen area has many hot springs, andis a summer resort. The Amakusa area has 120islands, large and small, in the Ariake andYatsushiro Seas.

㉘Aso-Kuju National ParkDesignation: 1934/12/04

This mountainous park has many volcanoes andthe world's largest caldera basin, whose circumfer-ence is about 100km. The Aso area has a magnifi-cent view of Aso-Gogaku Five Mountains, includingmeadows and the active volcano, Mt. Naka-Dake.The Kuju Range and Mt. Yufu-Dake offer greatviews of the Kuju area. The region is famous for itswild azaleas.

㉚Yakushima National Park(Yakushima Islands Nationa Park)

Designation: 2012/03/16

This park is known for the vertical distribution of vegetation from seashore to Mt. Miyanoura (1,936m), the highest peak in Kyushu. There are variety of plant species more than 1,900 species such as primeval natural forests (containing the forest of over 1,000 years-old Yaku ceders), endemic species and the southern limited species. Inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List on December 1993.

㉙Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park(Kirishima-Kinko Bay National Park)

In the Kirishima area, there are over 20 volcanoessuch as Mt. Karakuni, and natural forests formedby oaks, Japanese red pines, etc. at the foot of themountains. An active volcano and SakurajimaIsland are located in the Kinko Bay area.

㉓Setonaikai National Park(Setonaikai Sea National Park)

This park contains about 3,000 islets. The park fea-tures scenery of the calm inland sea and manyislands. One such view is of the Bisan Archipelagofrom Mt. Washu. The white beach sand and greenpines, such as those found on along theShibukawa coast and Keino-Matsuno, as well ascultivated land present scenery of harmoniousbeauty.

㉕Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park(Ashizuri-Uwa Sea National Park)

This marine park at the southernmost tip ofShikoku Island extends into Ehime and Kochi pre-fectures, and gives the visitor the illusion of being inthe subtropics. The Ashizuri Promontory offers amagnificent view, with many tall and steep cliffs,and Uwakai has a Rias coastline and islands.Tatsukushi, a marine park, offers various views ofcoral and tropical fish.

㉒San'inkaigan National Park(San'in Coast National Park)

This is a marine park that covers the 75km-longseacoast from Amino of Oku-Tango Peninsula tothe sand dunes of Tottori. There are beautifulcaves eroded by seawater. One of the main fea-tures of this park are the sand dunes of Tottori,some of which reach the height of 100m. There areplants such as Hamabohu (Glehnia) which arepeculiar to the sand dunes and the severe environ-ment of this area.

⑳ Ise-Shima National ParkDesignation: 1946/11/20

This park contains islets and bays such as Toba,Matoya, Ago and Gokasho. Ise-Jingu Shrine isimportant religiously, historically and culturally.There are natural forests formed by cedars andJapanese red pines behind the shrine.

㉑Yoshino-Kumano National ParkDesignation: 1936/02/01

The central mountainous area of the Kii Peninsulaand meandering rivers and seashore in the south-eastern part of the peninsula form this park. Mt.Yoshino is noted for its cherry blossoms, and Mt.Omine is worshipped by ascetic devotees. Thereare many cliffs along the coast from Owase to theShiono Promontory. Various kinds of scenery canbe seen in this area.

⑲Minami Alps National Park(South Alps National Park)

This park extends into Yamanashi, Nagano andShizuoka prefectures. There are many mountainsover 3,000m such as Mt. Kitadake (3,193m), thesecond highest peak in Japan. Alpine plants live inMt. Kitadake and Mt. Senjogatake, and indigenousplants can also be seen in this area.

⑯Chubusangaku National Park(Chubu Mountains National Park)

This mountainous park has a series of mountainsover 3,000m, including Mt. Shirouma, Mt. Tateyama,Mt. Yari, Mt. Hotaka and Mt. Norikura of theNorthern alps. Rivers and streams such as theKurobe River and Azusa River are beautiful. Thereare a number of flower gardens in Mida-gahara,Goshiki-gahara, etc. Alpine plants are beautiful inthe summer. This area is an important habitat ofthe ptarmigan.

⑬Chichibu-Tama-Kai National ParkDesignation: 1950/07/10

There are many coniferous and broadleaf trees andold stratum mountains such as Mt. Kumotori andMt. Mitake. Near Tokyo, this park provides theheadwaters for the Arakawa, Chikuma and Tamarivers. Natural forests and gorges offer good recre-ational sites. Mt. Mitake and Mt. Mitsumine areancient places of mountain worship.

⑥Shikotsu-Toya National ParkDesignation: 1949/05/16

Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya, along with activevolcanoes such as Mt. Yotei, Mt. Usu, Mt. Showa-shinzan and the newly formed Mt. Tarumae pro-vide many characteristic views. Lake Toya isfamous as the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan.

④Kushiroshitsugen National Park(Kushiro Marsh National Park)

This park covers Kushiro marsh, the largest in thecountry. The meandering Kushiro River and thevast moor are visible from observatories in thepark. Sacred cranes (Grus japonensis) breed in themarsh. There are lakes and marshes such as LakeTaro and Shirarutoro marsh in the eastern part ofthe park.

⑤Daisetsuzan National Park(Daisetsu Mountains National Park)

This is the largest of all the national parks in Japan,and is called the "Roof of Hokkaido." The main fea-ture of this park is volcanoes such as Mt. Tokachiand Mt. Asahi, which is the highest mountain inHokkaido. The park also boasts splendid views ofMt. Ishikari and alpine plants. Brown bear, Yezodeer and pika (Ochotona hyperborean yesoensis)live in this district.

③Akan-Mashu National ParkDesignation: 1934/12/04

This is a volcanic park, featuring such volcanoes asMt. Meakan. There are many rare plants such asMarimo (Cladophora aegagropila) in the Lake Akanarea. Lake Mashu is known for one of the world'sclearest lakes. Lake Kussharo, which is surroundedby hot springs, commands splendid views.

②Shiretoko National ParkDesignation: 1964/06/01

This park is highly primeval.Sea eagles,Blakiston'sfish-owls and blown bears live in the district. Theview of the Shiretoko mountain chain from the fivelakes is splemdid. The west side of the ShiretokoPeninsula is covered with drift ice during the winter.Inscribed on the World Heritage on July 2005.

①Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National ParkDesignation: 1974/09/20

This is the northernmost national park in Japan.Mt. Rishiri soars majestically above the sea.Rebun Island has many alpine plants such asRebunsou (Oxytropis megalantha). SarobetsuPlain, abundant in marsh plants, andWakasakanai' s dunes contribute to the excitinglandscape.

⑩Nikko National ParkDesignation: 1934/12/04

Features various aspects: a histrical architecture,Nikko Toshogu; a summer retreat on a mountain,Chuzenji Lake; and Senjo-gahara gorge such asKinugawa and Shiobara, and the foot of Mt.Nasuare very beautiful. The park is close to Tokyo andeasily accessible.

⑨Bandai-Asahi National ParkDesignation: 1950/09/05

This park is composed of many mountains. Mt.Dewa-Sanzan is famous for mountain worship, Mt.Asahi, Mt. Iide and Mt. Bandai are also locatedwithin the park boundaries. The view of Urabandaiand Lake Inawashiro is beautiful. This park is sur-rounded by mountains, forests and a lot of lakes.Antelopes and black bears live in this park.

⑪Oze National ParkDesignation: 2007/08/30

The Japan' most prominent mountain wetlands,Oze Mash. Oze-gahara has many moor plantssuch as mizu-basho(Lysichiton camtschatcense).

⑮Fuji-Hakone-Izu National ParkDesignation: 1936/02/01

Mt. Fuji, a World Cultural Heritage site inscribed in June 2013, rises high in a vast stretch of forests and several lakes. The Hakone area features several volcanoes, volcanic vents and lakes. Izu Peninsula offers scenic mountains, seashores, and a chain of characteristic islands in the ocean, Izu-shichito.

Keramashoto National Park (Kerama Islands National Park)

Kerama Islands are located to 40 km the west of Naha City, consisting of more than 30 small and large islands and a number of rock reefs. The blue of the sea is renowned as "Kerama Blue", and the contrast between the bright blue ocean and the white of the sand beach is fascinating. The rich ecosystems show various coral reefs in the shoals, and humpback whales breeding in the surrounding waters. Kerama Islands was the first national park that the area was designated as long as 7 km away from the shores for the reason that humpback whales are commonly observed in a wide range of the surrounding ocean. Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park

This park contains Iriomote Island , Ishigaki Island and other Islands. Roughly 80% ofIriomote Islands is covered with subtropical trees . There are many rare animals onIriomote Island such as the Iriomote wildcat. There is a coral reef stretching betweenTaketomi Island and Ishigaki Island creating the largest coral in Japan.

⑭Ogasawara National ParkDesignation: 1972/10/16

This park is composed of over 30 islands, includingthe two main islands of Chichijima and Hahajima.The Ogasawara archipelago is located 1,000-1,200km south of Tokyo. It is the smallest subtropicalnational park in Japan. The main feature of this parkis its many indigenous plants and animals. Inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List on June 2011.

⑦Towada-Hachimantai National ParkDesignation: 1936/02/01

Lake Towada and the Oirase River, which runsfrom this lake, make a beautiful landscape withplentiful green and water. There are volcanoessuch as Mt. Iwate, coniferous forests, and manymoors in Hachimantai. This park offers climbingand hot springs.

⑧Sanriku Fukko National Park(Sanriku Reconstruction National Park)

This park extends for 250 km from Kabushima in Aomori prefecture to Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi prefecture. Its northern part is a coastline composed of uninterrupted dynamic cliffs, while its southern part forms a delicately-rugged coastline. The park offers a breeding place for black-tailed gulls, petrels, etc. It was reorganized on 24 May 2013 as a contribution to the recovery of the Sanriku area which was severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

㉖Saikai National ParkDesignation: 1955/03/16

This park consists of more than 400 islands, largeand small, including Hirado, the KujukushimaIslands, and the Goto (Five Islands) Archipelago,extending over the northwestern extremity ofKyushu. The Goto Islands have high cliffs, andFukue Island has rare volcanic formations (aspite-homate, or cinder-cone)

⑰Myoko-Togakushi renzan National Park(Myoko-Togakushi Mountains National Park)

Consist of concentrated chain of volcanos such as Mt. Myoko and Mt. Izuna and non-volcanic mountains such as Mt. Amakazari. Lake Nojiri, dammed lake, is famous for fossil excavation of Palaeoloxodon naunmanni. The park also has interesting cultural sites such as Togakushi Shrine famous for Japanese Amanoiwato myth.

⑱Hakusan National Park(Mt Hakusan National Park )

Hakusan has been regarded as one of the threemost sacred mountains in Japan, along with Mt.Fuji and Mt. Tateyama, and has long been theobject of religious worship. This park is rich inalpine plants. Many plants have been named afterHakusan. This area is famous as a habitat for blackbears and antelopes.

⑫ Joshin'etsukogen National Park(Joshin'etsu Highland National Park)

This Park consists of a highland and its surrounding chain of mountains through Gunma, Nagano and Niigata prefectures. This park features a number of volcanoes including Mt. Asama, Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane and Mt. Tanigawa, which are 2,000m class. On the other hand, spacious highlands such as Shiga Kogen and Sugadaira are found in everywhere.

㉛Amamigunto National Park(Amami Islands National Park)

This national park consists of eight inhabited islands between Kyushu and Okinawa. Its subtropical laurel forests are home to concentrated populations of various unique, endangered plants and animals including the Amami rabbit. Furthermore, the islands are bordered by the world's northernmost coral reefs and host mangroves, tidelands and a diverse range of other natural environments.

Yambaru National ParkDesignation: 2016/09/15

Yambaru means an area filled with numerous mountains and large forests. This region is covered with subtropical laurel forestland, its terrain defined by the geological history of the Ryukyu island chain and related formation processes. Okinawa rail and other unique, endangered plants and animals live and breed here.
