Next phases

Nano-Tera.ch:

Nano-Tera.ch future evolution

• Pending governmental approval, Nano-Tera.ch is articulated in 3 phases:– First phase 2008-2011:

• Research and develop enabling technologies and experimental systems

– Second phase: 2012-2016:• Integrate new technologies into systems, demonstrating

the possibilities of new products and markets– Third phase: 2017-2020:

• Consolidation of results and deliverables of those projects that have a strong societal and industrial impact

• The second phase is 5-year long due to federal budget realignment– Still funding is approved in two stages (2011 and 2012)– The effective start date for Nano-Tera.ch was delayed by 18

months

21

Broad objectives for phase 2

• Continued focus on health, security and environment– With an extension to smart energy

• Consolidation of the research efforts– Build bridges among the pinnacles of excellence

• Achieve program cohesion– Respond to Swiss societal and industrial needs

22

• Calls will address both interdisciplinary projects as well as specific hot areas within the research space

23

November 2010: Visit to China• Swiss delegation visits 5 Chinese institutions

– Under the initiative of Prof. Boi Faltings (EPFL)– With the support of Swissnex– Presenting Nano-Tera.ch and MICS activities.

Call for Joint NT-SSSTC pilot grants

• Call for Proposal 2011:– Joint Nano-Tera.ch& SSSTC pilot grants– Provide grants to PIs in Switzerland with Chinese partners:

• Nano-tera.ch NTF rules• Nano-Tera.ch scope, with preference for Internet of

Things• Total budget of 500kCHF• Grants up to 100kCHF for 1 year only (Q3/11 – Q3/12)

• Proposals reviewed by EXCOM (as NTFs) with presence of SSSTC program manager

• Call open since May 2nd – closes June 30th

25

Events 2011

• Annual Meeting (Bern May 12-13)– Public review of all projects

• Scientific Advisory Board (Bern May 13)– Review of the overall program

• SNSF Panel review (Interlaken November 9-11)– Private review of 19 RTD projects
