• There are very many interesting names in the Urals. Some of them have Russian background. For example, Eekaterinburg, Berezovskiy, Pervouralsk, Kamensk-Uralsk and others. But some names are incomprehensible. Where are they from?

• In the old time the Ural mountains were called Rifey. V.Tatishchev introduced the present name- the Urals. It comes from Mansi word ”UR”. It means-a mountain.

•Mansi (or Voguli) are the people who had lived in our region before Ermak came. Now only 100 Mansi people live in the north of the Sverdlovsk oblast.

•But they didn’t disappear leaving no trace. They left us the names of rivers, lakes and settlements.
