STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITY

• Diagnosed disability

• Work must be adjusted

• Teachers will need to answer the following in their registers– What adjustments have been made to allow

the student to: access curriculum, participate in lessons, learn and achieve.

Disability Discrimination Act

• Schools must provide the infrastructure required so that SWD can easily access all parts of the school.

• Teachers must provide all materials in a way that SWD can easily access.

• Establish a sense of purpose• Hands on work• Praise all success, even the very minor• Repetition and Reinforcement• Help them to stay focused Position in room, varying activities, breaking up

SUGGESTIONS

• Organisation check• Establish relationship• Literacy support – scaffolds, cloze, vocab,

spelling lists• Numeracy support – model task, assume no

prior knowledge, explain language• Adjust – reduce length, reword question, model

response, give topic sentences• Check completed work

Sentence Structure

• Beginning and ending, match and rewrite

• Jumble up sentences, sort and rewrite

• Model sentences, especially complex sentences

• Teach the use of conjunctions and connectives

Reading

• Comprehension – short answer and multiple choice

• Identify topic sentences

• Sequence sentences to form a paragraph

• Sequence paragraphs

• True / False activities, rewrite false statements as true

.

Writing

• Model using an example of a well written text

• Joint construction• Scaffolds with very clear and simple

instructions• Insist on complete sentences in all writing• Mark their work, giving feedback and insist

on rewriting

Learning Support

Will send teachers of SWDs information about making adjustments for classwork and assessments

Will have SWDs Flagged on General Access for teachers who take extras

Will inform teachers of any students who get a new diagnosis

.

Life Skills

• Life Skills has been included in BOS documents since 2000

• Students need to be recommended by Learning Support for them to be enrolled in a Life Skills course in any KLA

• Parents have to agree• NO EXAMS – NO ASSESSMENT• Different Syllabus• Only a very small number of students will be

allowed to do Life Skills courses .
