Santa Claus coming soon

Santa Claus, alsoknown as FatherChristmas, SaintNicholas, Saint Nick,Kris Kringle, or simplySanta, is a legendaryfigure originating inWestern Christian cul-ture who is said to bringgifts to the homes ofwell-behaved childrenon the night of Christ-mas Eve or during theearly morninghours of ChristmasDay.

The myth ofSanta Claus hasenthralled childrenand even adults fora long time. The fig-ure of SantaClaus has been thebeacon of hope forcrying children, was the reason usedby parents to en-courage their chil-dren to be good forthe year and has be-come the universal sym-bol for laughter and joy.The “Real” Santa Clausblurs the boundary be-tween reality and fic-tion.

Waiting for theSanta to visit home ona winter night with car-ol singers and receivinga surprise gift at a par-ty from the whitebearded man is some-thing that everyonelooks forward to duringChristmas, especiallychildren. The SantaClaus is the mostsought after person.Donning the roleof Santa Claus, depict-ed as a fat, jolly, whitebearded man wearing ared coat with white col-lar and cuffs, red trou-sers, boots who goesaround with a red bagslung behind, however,is no easy job. Greetingus with Finnish choco-lates and the trade-mark, “Ho Ho Ho!”, the“Real Santa Claus” satwith a buoyant smile, personifying the spiritof Christmas.

Nobody wants tovolunteer for the role.Besides dressing up inadvance and being afun loving person,Santa needs to knowhow to manage a mobof children, and partwith the gift on theChristmas eve. Manychurches identify youthto play the part; theyfit in the role with welltucked pillow bags act-ing as tummy andloads of energy to keepthem going for hourstogether. Finding a dif-ferent person to dressup as Santa every yearmakes the choicetougher in manychurches as the identi-

ty of the person insidethe mask should not beguessed easily.

Santa is a much-loved part of both reli-gious and secular cele-brations of Christmas.Santa Claus is morethan someone who justcomes and gives you apresent, it’s this wholespirit of giving andmagic that you get to bea part of and celebrate.Parents have beentalking to kids aboutSanta since 1986.

Many non-Christianparents embrace Santabecause they seeChristmas serving as asecular as well as reli-gious holiday. Some ex-perts say that anotherreason children believein Santa is becausethey are imaginativeand love to pretend.Experts have debatedthe Santa myth foryears. Some argue thatperpetuating it discour-ages healthy skepti-cism in children andrequires adults to car-ry on an elaborate lie.

Santa Claus entertainchildren on the eve ofChristmas.

As a world- re-nowned figure, we usethe myth of SantaClaus to reach out tochildren and adultsalike, to spread themessage of kindnessand serve as a diplomat-ic ambassador to spreadthe message of loveamong the children andSanta Claus play themediator role in thisact.

With just few daysleft, Christmas prepa-rations are on to makeit a grand one thisyear. The festival ofChristmas or the birth

anniversary ofJesus Christ is cel-ebrated with greatcheer and enthusi-asm all over Indiaby the Christians.Christmas is alsoan occasion of fam-ily reunion. Themembers of thefamily living andworking at a dis-tance and differentplaces join togetherin merry-makingat one place andenjoy themselves. The man behind the

story of Christmasand Santa Claus assumedmuch importance. St.Nicholas was a Bishopwho lived in the fourthcentury in a placecalled Myra gave a shotto celebrate the festivalwith much fanfare. Hewas a very rich manbecause his parentsdied when he wasyoung and left him a lotof money. He was will-ing to part gift and thatbecame a practice. Inthis year’s demonetiza-tion may not lose thespirit of Santa Claushanding over gifts tochildren

As Christmas iscoming on the eve ofNew Year the celebra-tions assume greaterimportance with spe-cial prayers for Jesus. Mid-night prayers takeplace on the eve ofChristmas and culmi-nate with people of allages participate inmass prayers. The writer is freelancer from

The Vein Center introduces Venasealtechnology to cure varicose veins in 30 min

Dr. Saurabh Joshi conducted an awareness campaign on

Varicose Veins, where he introduced Venaseal technology

which is painless and non-anesthesia procedure

MUMBAI: Considering the growinglifestyle issue Varicose Veins. Mum-bai based leading varicose veins spe-ciality clinic chain – The Vein Centerorganized a health awareness cam-paign. In India, Varicose Veins affectsmore than 10 million Indians everyyear. As part of its awareness initia-tive, Dr. Saurabh Joshi had conduct-ed screening and awareness activitiesabout the latest technology name Ve-naseal, which is painless, no anaes-thesia required or saline injectionneeds to be given. Importantly, it canbe treated within 30min. Venaseal isthe only USFDA Approved Adhesivebased instant varicose veins closuresystem in the world. It is the onlymethod which does not require exten-sive use of stockings after the proce-dure.

Varicose veins are swollen, tortu-ous, and sometimes painful veins thatare filled with an abnormal collectionof blood. They are known to be com-mon among professionals such as jour-nalists, traffic police, teachers, nurs-es, shopkeepers, and bus conductors,

performing artists, surgeons, hospi-tality industry, who have to stand fora long time daily. If left untreated, itcan lead to several complications suchas ulcers, bleeding, and thromboem-bolism. The Vein Center, in particu-lar, is addressing lifestyle and riskfactors such as standing for a longtime daily, obesity, pregnancy, smok-ing, and family history through itsscreening and awareness campaign.

“The major reason of getting var-icose veins is a lifestyle issue wherepeople are dedicated to sit in the sameposition for a longer duration or standfor a long period of time on the fieldand have no knowledge of controllingit. Newer techniques like Venasealwould help in curing more fellow In-dians faster and more comfortably. Itis a real boon for the older populationwith advanced vein disease like se-vere pain, skin damage and openwounds which earlier could not betreated as they would not be fitenough for anaesthesia,” says Dr.Saurabh Joshi, MD, FNVIR, Founderof The Vein Center, Mumbai.

“Due to the non chalantattitude of the post officeofficials and their firmdecision of not providingthe space for the pass-port office, the residents

of Panvel are suffering. We have to go all theway to Thane for all ourpassport related work.”

Shrirang Barne,Shiv-Sena MP said,“Few weeks back I hadraised the issue in theParliament and alsoasked the concernedministry to look into thematter and start the

passport office in Pan-vel at the earliest. I ampersonally taking upthe issue and doing aregular follow-up withthem so that the pass-port office can soon bea reality in Panvel. Iam confident that in2020 the Panvel resi-dents will have a newpassport office.”

Winter is a timewhen several ailmentscrop up, the common-est being the notoriouscolds and coughs. Aswinter sets in, due tothe cold temperature, water droplets in theair cool to saturationand form the visible col-lection of minute waterdroplets suspended inthe atmosphere nearthe earth’s surface. This is what is knownas fog, however in pol-luted areas, esp. cities, fog combines with thepollution in the atmo-sphere to form smog. This happens becausethe pollution in the at-mosphere settles at alower level in winter. As a result, we arebreathing in muchmore polluted air thanusual during winter. In susceptible individ-uals, this leads to easyinfections, coughs andcolds, which some-times last through theentire winter season.

Winter Troublespeople. Damp, crowdedconditions, such as bus-es, trains, shops, etc.,can help any airborneinfection to spread rap-idly, especially coughsand colds. We tend tokeep windows closedduring winters, think-ing that preventing ex-posure to cold air willhelp prevent coughsand colds, but this is afallacy. Circulation ofclean, fresh air is im-

portant to preventcoughs and colds andhence regularly airingrooms is necessary. Inwinter, we also drinkless water than usual, but it is important tomaintain a regular 8-10glasses of fresh waterper day. Water serves toflush out toxins andkeep our inner passag-es moist and function-ing well.

One thing that wetend to overlook iswashing our hands fre-quently. Doorknobs areknown to harbour a lotof germs and transmitinfections very com-monly. If you have

caught a cold, try notto transmit it further.Use tissues and disposeof them in the bin af-ter using them. Coveryour mouths and nos-es while coughing andsneezing. It is benefi-cial to eat foods thatare energeticallywarming with morespices. Warm spiceshave anti-microbialproperties that are pro-tective and also cura-

Issue : 189 14 December, 2019

Life is preciousIt is alarming to note that over 5,000 people were killed in Ma-

harashtra last year for not wearing helmet. In addition, more than 600motorists and over 1,000 co-travellers died for not wearing seat-belts last year. What is even more disturbing s the fact that the stateis among the top five in India to have the highest road fatalities.

While we are all aware how important it is to follow traffic ruleswhich have been framed for our own safety, most of us tend to havea casual attitude towards this. It has become a habit to follow rulesand regulations only if there is strict and stringent implementationof rules by the government. The general excuse for not wearinghelmets are: It is uncomfortable and hot; it messes up my hair; I amonly going a short distance etc. etc.

According to reports, injuries to the head and neck are the maincause of death, severe injury and disability among users of motorcy-cles and bicycles. Globally, there is an upward trend in the numberand use of motorcycles and bicycles, both for transport and recre-ational purposes. This is being accompanied by a considerable in-crease in the number of head injuries and fatalities that will onlycontinue to increase if present trends continue unchecked.

Trauma to the brain can occur as a result of an impact, which cancause a concussion or open skull fracture, or a jarring motion, suchas a quick turn or sudden stop. Even seemingly mild head injuries, where you don’t lose consciousness, can cause permanent behav-ioural and cognitive problems, such as memory loss, inability to con-centrate, sleep disorders and, in some cases, permanent disabilityor death.

Studies have shown that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk ofa serious brain injury and death because during a fall or collision, most of the impact energy is absorbed by the helmet, rather thanyour head and brain. However, just as important as wearing a hel-met is, it is equally important to wear the right helmet. A helmet thatdoesn’t fit properly or offer sufficient cushioning can give you a falsesense of security while not actually providing the level of protectionyou need. Along with the riders, the pillion riders, irrespective ofage, too should wear helmets.

It is unfortunate that compliance to traffic safety rules is linkedto enforcement on the ground by the police. With limited manpow-er, it is really impossible for the traffic officials to be present at allthe place at all the time. Moreover, it should be understood thatlaws are made to save people from potential threat. Without a hel-met the ride may sound thrilling, but it is not safe. Riding a bikewithout a helmet does not just jeopardise the rider’s life, but that ofthe others’ as well. It is time that each one of us realise the impor-tance of abiding by traffic rules and protect not only our lives butthat of the others.

Mukerji as police officer who goes against a youngand ferocious 21 year old man on a raping andmurdering sprint)

Positive Points:Raniis back with a bang andproves that she is one ofthe finest actor. Her act-ing is intense with fewhard hitting dialogues. She is good in action too.Vishal Jethwa, who playsthe villain, has delivereda power packed perfor-mance with the rightamount of thrill and fear. His Rajasthani accentadds spice to the character.Due to the franchisevalue, film will surely lure audience to the theatres, especially women.Debut Director (Gopi Puthran)(Writer: Mardaani) has done a commendable joband has handled such a sensitive issue rightly. Ac-tion sequences are well executed. The editing(Chaaru Shree Roy) is crisp. The music and back-ground score (Music: Anu Malik, Score: John Stew-art Eduri) are in absolute sync with thefilm.Locations of Kota are a good match with thesetup.

Negative Points: Film lacks freshness in sub-ject. Many cinematic liberties have been taken, especially to showcase the character of Vishal Jeth-wa. His thought process and planning does notmatch with his early 20s age making it difficult forthe audience to digest the criminal brain he has.The reason for his brutal mentality has been show-cased in the climax which keeps the audiencewondering throughout the justification for his acts.Story is a pure work of fiction; though Screenplayis good but could’ve been better. Dialogues lackpunches.

Box Office: Film has created a good buzz dueto promos, but it’s quite unlikely that it’d get adecent opening. Hence, last week’s film “Pati Pat-ni and Woh” would continue to rule the box officein the second week too.

The highlight is Mam-mootty’s female avatar in the first half. While themegastar does look a bit stiff in action scenes, hebrings a certain lively authenticity to his feminineportrayal. Misuse of water has to be stoppedIt is a common fact that if corrective measures are not taken im-

mediately, there is going to be acute shortage of fresh potable drink-ing water in the near future. There is a need to increase public aware-ness on the importance of conservation, preservation and protectionof water resources and drinking water supply. After air, water is thesecond most essential lifeline for the survival of human beings. Na-ture created adequate resources for their survival, however becauseof meddling by the human beings, the resources have not only beenpolluted, they have also been depleted due to gross mismanagement.Pollution from land-based sources is greatly affecting the aquatic bio-logical resources and biodiversity. Rampant use of pesticides is fur-ther making the fresh water resources unusable.

Though water is one of the replenish able resources, yet due todepleting green cover because of excessive deforestation and conse-quent reduction in rainfall, perennial drought like situation has beencreated in many parts of our country. It is because of this reason ithas become all the more important to conserve water, besides findingmeans to replenish the aquifers. While each one of us can do our bitby conserving water at home and being more cautious while using it,the real solution lies in rainwater harvesting, which has to be followedreligiously wherever possible.

Rainwater harvesting technique is two pronged. Firstly, by collect-ing rain water from roof tops and open catchment areas and storing inhuge underground sumps and secondly by arresting the surface runoff into the rivers and seas by constructing percolation chambers torecharge the aquifer. The former has a limitation that it can be adopt-ed only during monsoons. Besides, it requires huge investment by wayof construction of water retaining structures. The latter is a long-term solution and shall go a long way in making this vital resourceavailable for human consumption. Even for places like Mumbai/ NaviMumbai, where sub soil water is not potable in many areas, collectionof surface run off into artificially created lakes after treating themfor water retainment, can provide viable solution. This rainwater af-ter treatment can be used for all purposes. Further, the sewage treat-ment plants can be provided in the residential complexes as the recy-cled water can be used at least for washing vehicles and horticulturepurposes. Besides, this shall prevent pollution of water bodies intowhich this sewage would have been otherwise discharged.

It is heartening that many of the schools, colleges and residentialcomplexes are utilizing this technique and are thus contributing im-mensely in conserving water. The town planning authorities shouldalso implement this in letter and spirit and thus save the human civ-ilization from evident disaster in making on account of depleting wa-ter resources.

One of the PCMCofficials on the condi-tion of anonymity said,“It is sad that theNMMT is not respond-ing in a positive way. So

now the residents of Pan-vel do not have any oth-er option but to continuewith the existing servic-es.”

According to thePCMC data, PCMC ju-risdiction covers 29 vil-lages of Panvel talukawhich also includesRasayani and five othernodes developed by CI-DCO like Taloja,Kharghar, Kalamboli,Kamothe and New Pan-vel which covers110 sq.km.
