Town Homes

Apartment Buildings

Interior hallways Single floor units, multi-floor

building. Common entrance or lobby Typically stairwells and standpipes

Older buildings can have dry non-looped systems

15

Apartment Buildings- Center Hallway

Interior hallways are dangerous.

Anticipate high heat and low visibility.

Controlled ventilation is critical to support fire attack.

Mid-rise evolution

Mid-Rise Plan – Lower floor fire

  1st BATTALION

- Establish or assume Command and announce location of Command Post Confirm and announce the primary firefighting stairway.

- Confirm and announce primary evacuation stairway. - Assign companies to Lobby Control, areas of refuge and Staging.    1st ENGINE COMPANY

- Radio initial Size up report to include number of floors and buildingoccupancy type.- Assume Fire Attack duties and report to best known location of problem.- Communicate to IC or Dispatch how you are accessing area. EXAMPLE: E18 at scene side “A” – advancing to third floor via North stairwell to investigate.- Advise IC conditions of lower floors while ascending to fire floor.(When a ladder company is immediately available, the ladder company should assume investigation duties and engine company personnel should prepare for fire attack in the stairwell or floor below the fire).

21

Mid-Rise Plan – Lower floor fire 2 ND ENGINE COMPANY

- Assist attack line/crew - Position apparatus on FDC. D/O makes FDC connections and

establishes water supply. - Officer and FF stage bundle(s) for Backup line or duties as directed by IC

3rd ENGINE COMPANY  -Exposure line to floor above or adjacent units

  4th ENGINE COMPANY- RIT

1st LADDER - Interior operations

2nd LADDER - Ventilation

RESCUE

REMOVAL

Do not waste resourceson people not in immediate

distress.

There may be people you cannot see that are in greater distress!

23

Fire Spread and Fire Attack

It’s a fact….fire goes up!

General Tactical Wisdom:•First Two Engines (attack and back up)to the lowest floor on fire; 1st and 2nd arriving by Best Practices.

•Third engine to the floor above; also Best Practice.

Attics:•Watch for spread to the attic via interior, exterior and chases.

•Assume all attics are common.

24

Short Reports Use the same terminology:

Garden Apartment Townhome Apartment Building

What floor is the fire on? “Fire showing from floor 4, side A”.

Apartment Buildings – 2 critical things:

Identify the fire attack stairwell Understand and communicate the hallway conditions in a

CAN report. E-4 in 3rd floor hallway, heavy smoke conditions, floors 1 and 2 are clear, we need one engine company to help with our stretch.

25

Ventilation Upper floor fires

Roof cuts above apartment and hallway Pressurize the stairwells Cold smoke will not vent upward

Lower floor fires Hydraulic ventilation aided by pressurized stairwells PPV

These assignments are influenced by the incident needs. Two or more ladders may be needed to

accomplish each incident goal.
