May not be a mutant superhero like the X-Men, but has special powers
• Always-on co-processor
• Touchless control• Active Display• Quick Capture• Spotlight Player• Motorola Connect
Not exactly flagship specs…• 4.7-inch, 1,280 x 720
display• 1.7GHz dual-core
Snapdragon processor
• 2GB of RAM and 16GB fixed storage
• 10-megapixel shooter
• Uses a nano-SIM
… but solid build and great handling
• Curved rear and ergonomic design• Great for one-handed usage• Solid build• Chequered pattern on the rear
Walnut or teak for you sir?
• The Moto X is available in white, black, red, royal blue or turquoise
• For Rs 2,000 extra, you can opt for a wooden rear panel, finished in either walnut or teak
Scrumptious visuals on the 720p screen
• The 4.7-inch AMOLED screen may only offer 720p resolution, but is gorgeous and vivid
• Good viewing angles and sunlight legibility • Produces crisp and vibrant colours• Ample contrast and brightness levels
Clicks yummy shots• The 10MP primary shooter
can be launched from standby with a quick double twist
• The Camera app is basic, but includes features like Auto HDR, panorama, slow-mo video capture and touch-to-shoot
• Pristine images in good lighting and usable shots in low light
All the sweetness of KitKat, plus useful Moto goodies
• Runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box
• Completely stock interface, with no customisations
• Includes useful Moto apps like Migrate for moving your data and Assist that helps you define phone behaviour based on conditions or time
Starts mutating and shows its true colours
• Loads of unique features• Features like Active
Display and touchless control really hold the potential to change the way you interact with your phone
• These go much beyond gimmicks or party tricks – they actually work
Active Display is like Glance on Nokia Lumias, only better
• Notifications fade in and out on the screen when the phone is on standby
• Let you jump to the app or event directly with an upward swipe
• Doesn’t consume extra battery power
Spotlight Player is pure, interactive fun
• Animated, interactive stories created by award-winning artists
• You can interact with them when you turn around
• Somewhere between an animation and a game
• Loads of fun
No need to get touchy feely• Saying the ‘Okay Google
Now’ hotword wakes up the device from standby and activates voice search
• Check waiting notifications, make calls, launch navigation, set alarms and reminders, send SMSes and emails… all with just your voice
• Works brilliantly and adds a lot to the usage experience
• Only works with your voice
Fast and steady – doesn’t win the race, yet stands on the podium
• Dual-core Snapdragon chip running at 1.7GHz and 2GB of RAM handle routine tasks well. Even intensive games like Riptide GP2 load fast and run smoothly, with no sign of lag
• Full rage of connectivity options including Wi-Fi ac and NFC on board. No memory expansion slot but USB OTG is supported
• Almost 12GB of storage available to use
Doesn’t like power sockets much
• The sealed 2,200mAh battery keeps the Moto X going for a full day comfortably with moderate heavy usage
• Lasted 10 hours on our video loop battery test, with brightness and volume at 50 percent
At a glance
• 4.7-inch, 1,280 x 720 AMOLED screen
• 10MP primary camera, 2MP front shooter
• 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor
• Adreno 320 GPU

• Dual-band Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, NFC, USB OTG

-• Hard to justify the specs
at this cost
• Non-expandable memory
• Touchless control does trip on occasion and fails to recognise words
Pros and cons
+• Solid build, available in
a variety of colours• Runs Android KitKat out
of the box• Stock interface, with
useful apps like Assist• Smooth performance• Very good camera• Active Display and
Touchless Control work well, and redefine usage
Rs 23,999 onwards
Pricing and verdict
“The Moto X is a path-breaking smartphone. It’s a jack of all trades with its good build, crisp display, ergonomic design,
smooth performance and good snapper, and really takes things to the next level with its Touchless Control. May not be a value-for-money buy in the traditional sense, but is definitely a smart buy.
Highly recommended.”
