Is your child safe from toxins?
Kate Quinn Orginics, Moms’ Cottage
It would seem that the last place a parent
would think to be concerned about finding
toxic gas in our child’s environment is in
their clothing, bedding and toys.
Children are especially susceptible to
higher levels of exposure because they
have smaller body mass, put items in
their mouths, and have direct contact
with bedding, flooring, and toys. Since
children’s body and immune systems are
still developing, they are more vulnerable
to the potential risks these toxins present.
In Singapore, a recent test of some 50 toys
found that nearly half of them have excessive
amounts of toxic chemicals that can cause
severe health problems in our children.
Chemicals such as Formaldehyde, lead and
bisphenol A are just some from a long list of
toxins found in our children daily products.
Some are even not regulated. Why are these
chemicals there in the first place?
Formaldehyde is a popular “cheap” chemical
used in clothing, shoes, furniture, fertilizer
paper, toys, cosmetics (includind baby bath
products) and food. It is commonly used in
the textile manufacturing industry as a stain
resistant mechanism, to fix color to a fabric,
to give a permanent press effect, to stop
shrinking and to make fabric more
flame resistant.
Bisphenol A and phthalates are used
to harden or soften plastic products --
can leach out of the plastic in baby toys
and products every time an infant puts
it in its mouth, causing possibly severe
health problems.
How do we as parents reduce our child’s
exposure to toxins?
ToysAvoid toys that list vinyl or PVC as
ingredients. Soft plastic toys like bath toys,
squeeze toys, and dolls are commonly
made of vinyl. When possible, choose
plastic-free toys such as fabric teethers,
wooden toys (unpainted), and cloth and
plush toys such as Alimrose Designs,
Raplapla or Baby Moov.
When selecting wood toys, solid wood toy is
preferable to one made with pressed woods,
which may contain formaldehyde. Also look
for wood toys finished with natural oils, such
as linseed, walnut and beeswax.
If you have painted toys made before 1978,
test the paint for lead and replace if necessary.
Baby bottles and sippersAvoid products made of polycarbonate plastic,
which can leach bisphenol-A, a chemical
that mimics estrogen. Choose bottles made
of tempered glass, polypropylene plastic, or
polyethylene plastic. Choose sippy cups made
of polypropylene or polyethylene.
Nipples, pacifiers, and teethersChoose silicone nipples instead of rubber,
which can leach carcinogenic nitrosamines
(silicone is clear, rubber is yellow). Choose
pacifiers and teethers made without PVC;
silicone pacifiers are available, and
many companies have stopped using
PVC for teethers.
Clothing and beddingAvoid products made of, or coated with,
PVC, which can include various items
such as bibs, hats, bags, raingear, and
shoes. Opt for organic cotton (grown
without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers),
unbleached cotton (free of dioxin-
producing chlorine), hemp and wool
colored with low-impact, colorfast dyes.
Such as Kate Quinn Organics and Bebe
Au Lait bibs
Art and craft suppliesLook for clays made without PVC, or
make your own (recipes are available).
Look for supplies that are labelled
‘non-toxic’.
You deserve a good night’s
sleep too.

www.thedreambag.com.sgWith the Chirstmas season approaching, many of you will be hosting a Christmas party or
attending numerous parties. It does not, however, have to mean creating a massive amount
of landfill waste. You can have both a fun and a green Christmas party at the same time.
Earth-saving InvitesWhen sending out your Christmas party
invites, you can save paper by sending out
eCard invitations.
Dispose of the disposablesIt has become very commonplace to buy
a large number of non-recyclable and
disposable plates, cups and eating utensils
to facilitate an “easy” clean-up. However,
many people don’t realize the vast amount
of waste this practice generates. While
using bio-degradable, disposable table-
ware is one way to address this problem,
an even better solution is to avoid that
waste entirely by using durable goods and
washing them when you’re done.
Green Christmas DecorationsInstead of spending money on artificial
Christmas decorations that won’t
biodegrade, there are far more Earth-
friendly alternatives that look great and
have a much lower impact on the world.
Candles made of beeswax, organic soy
or palm wax burn longer and are usually
scented with non-toxic essential oils. Even
the fairy lights on your tree can be made
from super-efficient LEDs.
Party Food and DrinkOrganic and local items support the people
who are on the ecological front lines and
save energy. Organic Christmas party food,
whether homemade or buy prepared foods,
can make a big ecological impact. There
are even organic wineries popping up all
over the world to make the Holidays bright
for your guests. If you plan to serve drinks
from cans, get ready a box or trash bag,
marked it clearly for recycled cans.
KROOOM – eco-friendly kids furniture that folds flat! Featuring storage boxes and chests, stool and table sets, book cases as well as a fabulous collection of dollhouses, including a castle and fire station. All of this made from laminated recycled cardboard that has outstanding strength and stability. Environmentally-friendly, with no toxic materials and a design that appeals to both parents and kids.
