Give an explanation to what is happening in the above graph that

shows a cow population? (where the arrow points)

Catalyst Review Remember that if a population goes over

the carrying capacity there are not enough resources to support it

What happened in this case was that there were too many cows which ended up eating ALL the grass and not allowing enough to regrow so the population actually declined below the carrying capacity.

General Fact

In a food pyramid, the shape of the pyramid tells you the different amounts of energy

General Fact

Humans, as a whole, have a far greater impact on their environment than most species

Why?

Use more resources than most organisms

Problems

Global Warming Greenhouse effect Depletion of the Ozone layer Killing of harmless plants and

animals through pesticides Deforestation Using up non-renewable resources

Criteria for negative effects on the environment

Uses non-renewable resources Drastically alters the ecosystem,

environment and cycles Can lead to species displacement

Criteria for positive effects on the environment

Uses renewable resources Does not drastically affect the

environment Recyclable, reusable Maintains the desired ecosystem

interactions Does not disrupt cycles

Examples

Nitrogen Cycle Food Web Pesticides
