WHAT | A storage system that fits the lifestyle of an apartment dweller. The design must be sturdy and accommodate personal possesions. It should also have the capacity to serve multiple functions.

WHO | George has an appreciation for visual culture on a global scale. He lives in a small space, but loves to have friends over. His apartment is also shared by his best friend, Fido. George connects with his possesions on an emotional level and likes unique things with a known history.

But, it must be durable enough for Fido.

Give me something that reflects my style.

Apartment living isn’t always easy.

BACKGROUND STORY

RESEARCHINSPIRATION | The contrast of light and shadow present in cut-out patterns creates a simple yet elegant visual interest. Also, patterns that are uniform from a first glance, yet permuted on closer inspection create a special intrigue. Functionally, multi-use designs are an asset to small apartment spaces.

RESEARCHMATERIALS | While searching for local resources for wood, I discovered Metro-Hardwoods, an urban sawmill that recovers old city trees normally headed for mulching and shredding, and turns them into quality kiln-dried hardwood. I found that a variety of local wood species were available including the following:

Box Elder

Cottonwood

Red Elm

Sassafras

Maple (Spalted)Maple

Poplar

CONCEPTSSTORAGE AND VERSATILITY | Two key themes throughout the concept phase were storage potential and versatility. These are both major concerns for apartment dwellers.

REFINEMENTPATTERN | It was important to use a design that would translate into visually pleasing patterns. Also, I wanted to highlight the natural beauty of the wood by making the value and direction of the wood grain an element of the pattern.

CONSTRUCTIONBUILDING THE PROTOTYPE • I joined and planed over 7 different wood species from Metro-

Hardwoods to begin building.• I cut the planks down into 18 x 18 in squares so that I could have a CNC

machine a texture into the squares designated as the bottom of a cube• Aluminum fasteners were made to fit into the CNCed cut-outs on the

outside of each square• I then began to assemble the cubes • After building the cubes, I began constructing the front face of each unit.• I paired the matching triangles for maximum contrast.

REFINEMENTSCALE | After building the prototype, I recognized that the scale of the individual cubes could be smaller. Shrinking them to 15 x 15 inches made them more portable, while still being an appropriate seat height.

FORM | Also, the shape of the cutouts, or handles, was not the most comfortable to the touch. I wanted to develop that shape further. The slightly modified cutout is a more organic shape with no harsh edges.

MOMENTOARRANGE | Momento is capable of many different configurations. The possible patterns increase as more units are added. Inside, shelves can be added for even more customized storage.

LINK | The aluminum connectors fit into the corresponding patterns on the faces of the cubes. This lego-like fit prevents the cubes from shifting.
