and display respect all year long. They
will be rewarded with praise and Tiger

IN THE ART ROOM
Next week we will continue to work on a fun, colorful collaborative
project. (Think: “It’s a Small World.”) AND we used some neon
colors too!
We added an extra incentive for each class to earn points towards an “ART PARTY” ( by following the rules and being C.O.O.L. )
Individuals can earn a hole punch on their card to earn a choice from
the Art room treasure box. (If you have leftover (new) goody bag
items from birthday parties, please send them in! I’ll gladly add them
to our art room treasure box! Thanks!)

2nd/3rd/5th: This week we have been reviewing what we
learned about Color Theory. We can identify and classify
colors as primary, secondary, warm, cool, intermediate,
and neutral. We can talk about how colors are mixed and
how to identify pairs of complementary colors (opposites
on the color wheel). We can decide if a color is a shade,
tint or tone of a hue by adding black, white or gray. We
added analogous, monochromatic and color scheme to
the 5th grade vocabulary words. 2nd grade completed a
Color Theory Booklet.
Thank You for sending in
reusable/recyclables, like: Magazines/
newspapers/cardboard rolls, etc.
We played a color theory
review game and learned
how to find complementary
color pairs on the color
wheel.

Computing — Mrs Bradbury Welcome to Computing, 6th Grade have been
completing their end of Unit project for their Problem Solving Unit—Designing an App.
The project is split into 3 parts, where the students have decided on a real-world problem they would like to solve with their APP, they have sketched our their app and identified inputs, processes, storage and outputs, as well as designing a logo. They have also completed a peer review and have identified improvements for each other’s Apps. Great Work 6th Grade.
Grade 8 have continued their study of Computer Science Prin-ciples, this week we have explored more deeply how communica-tion between multiple computers can work over the Internet. Students have done this by playing a simplified game of Battle-ship, in which the first game is played unplugged, in their table groups, and the second game is played using the Internet Simu-lator, so that multiple students can connect to each other and see each other’s messages.
Students have devised a messaging protocol that makes it clear who is sending the message and who the intended recipient is.
Students have also devised a binary protocol for playing this game for which they have developed an addressing system for players, as a well as a formal packet structure for transmitting
data about the state of the game.
Well done 8th Grade.
Genesis Device demonstration video in Star Trek II: The
Wrath of Khan was the the first entirely computer generat-
ed movie sequence in the history of cinema. That stu-

things are looking good. We will get there yet!!
4th & 5th - Completed our scale model of the planet Earth.
Next Week: 2nd & 3rd – We will continue to construct our clay pyramid proving that the “IMPROVE”
step of the Engineering Design Process is a necessary step.

-The school year is flying by. Thank
goodness Hurricane Dorian decided to
miss us!
-Reading is an integral part of your

your children are reading at home and
that they are filling out their reading
logs! I will check these every
Monday, and students who have them
completed will receive a little knick
knack or treat.
-Agendas/Planners will be going
home every day with the students.
They will include your child’s color for
the day as well as a few things that we
did in school. These few things could
be starting points when asking your
child about what they did in school that
day. :)
-In Math, we are continuing our work
on time, addition, subtraction, and
multiplication. Homework may come
home these next couple weeks as
we make our way towards the end of
Unit 1.
-In Writing, we are continuing to write
personal narratives. Focus is still on
transition words as well as
understanding the overall writing

Sixth and Seventh Grade Math News from Ms. Chapin
(LChapin@discoveryacademy.info) This week in math, the sixth grade
math students continued their math practices, focusing on techniques for problem solving. They continued exploring the properties of numbers, specifically factors and multiples. The seventh grade advanced class were supposed to return their menus for their big quarter one project with their choice of project indicated for approval. So far, I’ve seen many exciting projects. The project is due Oct. 4. The seventh grade math students continued with the seventh grade curriculum, learning about
rates, division with decimals, complex fractions, division with fractions, and making unit conversions
The objectives for this week are to use ratios and rates in real-world situations and to gain an understanding of proportionality. Required within it all are operations with decimals and fractions, especially division. All students have access to IXL and Study Island for further home study. Please email me if you need access to your student’s username or password for either or if you would like to be sent weekly reports of progress.

All classes: We will be close to wrapping up our first chapter! Be prepared to take the NWEA math
test on Wednesday and Thursday during your period in my classroom. 7A and 8B will meet me in the
computer lab for testing. We will complete review activities on Friday and test early the following
week on Chapter 1 concepts.
Club News:
Students and Parents! Be prepared to participate in higher level math concepts to prepare for Math
Competitions. If you do not come in ready to practice, you will be removed from my club. If you are
ready, I am working on setting up a reward system for participation and success on the challenging
questions we will face!
Session 1 was a little bit hectic as we got into the swing of things. The 35 minutes flew by much faster
than I expected. Session 2 will have more structure: Each week we will warm-up and tackle a new
multi-step problem of the week. We also have grade level practice competition we will begin during
the club.
Week 3 has continued to be a great continuation of
the first 2 weeks. Students are getting used to the routine and doing a very nice job with getting changed
up, out to class and immediately into our warm up routine. Each week we have had leaders who take the
class through the stretching and warm up routine each day. Ask your student if they have led the class
for a week. They all jumped at the opportunity and take it very seriously. I am trying to build leadership by doing this with the kids so encourage your student
to step up. Every student will do this during the course of the year at least once, but I always ask for
volunteers first. Please make sure to tell your students to keep me up to date on how they feel in
this heat. Most have been doing a good job of communicating with me, but I want to make sure they
are all taken care off.
SCOOP BALL 7th graders are starting their Scoop Ball Unit. This game is similar to Lacrosse, but with a smaller handled scoop to throw it with. The object is like Lacrosse, move the ball around the court by passing, catching, running and shooting it into a goal. This should be a lot of fun. We focus on skills through drills as individuals, partners and groups. Then we will get into game like situations before we start playing real games. Effort and participation are the key components to a successful grade!
6th grade has moved on from their evasion games unit to our fitness concept units. They will participate in a variety of circuit training concepts from Cardio to Muscular Endurance and YES even YOGA! If we have any parents that are Yoga instructors out there and would like to help lead my 6th grade class through a Yoga routine that would be awesome! Just email me so we can set up a time and make sure that you fill out the required paperwork and clearance checks to come work with us. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at cbartlett@discoveryacademy.info.
