Natural featuresThis park is primarily magnificent forests of coast redwood and Douglas-fir, with a lush understory of huckleberry, ferns, redwood sorrel, horsetail, and wildflowers.
A number of creeks within the Park provide riparian habitat. Pescadero Creek provides winter habitat for steelhead trout as they migrate upstream to spawn.
Wildlife often sighted in the Park includes Steller’s jays, acorn woodpeckers, western gray squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and banana slugs.
Memorial County ParkThe old-growth forests of Memorial County Park have been favorite family camping grounds for generations. This popular park has trails, campsites, group camps, a visitor center, nature trails, and 673 acres to explore.
Acquired by the County in 1924, Memorial is the oldest County park. It is dedicated to the San Mateo County servicemen who died in World War I.
Memorial, along with Sam McDonald, Heritage Grove, and Pescadero Creek comprise the vast Pescadero Creek Park Complex. The complex totals 8,020 acres and includes some of the Santa Cruz Mountain’s most stunning redwood forests.

Activities and facilitiesMore than eight miles of hiking trails lead through a diversity of habitats from Pescadero Creek, through the redwoods, and to the 680’ summit of Mt. Ellen. The self-guided Mt. Ellen Nature Trail offers a short and easy interpretive loop. The western loop of the Pomponio Trail provides wonderful panoramic views.
Memorial County Park is open year-round for camping, picnicking and youth group activities. Near the park entrance, a camp store (open seasonally) offers camping supplies, groceries, and firewood. Check park kiosks for current campfire programs, nature programs, and naturalist walks.
The Park offers many redwood campsites with restrooms, water, and coin-operated showers (subject to water availability), as well as a limited number of sites that can accommodate recreational vehicles up to 35’ in length (no hook-ups).
Memorial also includes drop-in picnic sites, as well as group picnic and group camping sites that are available by reservation.
To make reservations, visit www.SMCoParks.org or call 650-363-4021.
