Question 2: How Effective is the combination of the music video and the ancillaries together?

Our Brand Image:

Our artist was of an indie/rock genre, therefore there are typical characteristics associated with these genres which we have used throughout both our ancillaries and our music video, therefore linking all three.

These consist of:

*Dark, simple colours and contrasting bright colours. The use of black, grey, white and the contrasting orange and turquoise draw attention to certain aspects, for example the eye on the front cover to link with the name of the artist. The background used throughout the music video is black and white as well as the costume used by the artist which is always of this same colour scheme. The digipak features photographs of a turquoise electric guitar Other indie/rock groups which use coordinating colour schemes throughout their media texts are:

Magazine advertisement

Black and white are used consistently throughout all three as well as contrasting colours to high light and draw attention to certain aspects of importance, the albums name for example, which is in red.

* we also used images and clips involving music

instruments constantly to reinforce the genre of

music and also because prior research told us that

it is a common interest of our target audience.

Which would, in turn make the video/ digipak and

magazine cover more interesting to them.

*As our song used terminology about drugs, this would also be associated with our band image. Although not promoting it, the lyrics will make the artist easier for the audience to relate to as he would seem to see things the same way they do. It also ties in with the ‘rock and roll’ image of being in a band and will therefore link with what the target audience already like.

* Having shown members of our target audience our media texts, we received the following results:1.Do you think the three media texts work well together?

When asked “if no, why? And what would you change or

do differently?” the common responses where:

“the magazine advertisement doesn’t look as professional

as the other two”

And

“none of the bright colours are used in the music video.”

I agree with these as now looking back, we spent m

ore time on

the video and digipak than we did on the magazine

advertisement and it i

s clearly obvious to our ta

rget audience.

Given the chance to create these media texts again I w

ould

spend more time on the magazine advertis

ement and get it up to

the same standard as th

e other two, I w

ould also incorporate

more bright “stand out” colours in the music video to lin

k in

with the two paper based pieces.

We also discovered during out research, that the music we chose (indie/rock) was not as popular with our target audience as we had first thought. When finding a similar band to our artist, we came up with “The Kooks” a very well known band of this genre and most of our prior research was about this particular band and the good and bad aspects of their music videos, CD covers and magazine advertisements. Their music was very popular with our target audience whereas ours was seen as “quite repetitive”.

(which I can only agree with after hearing it 1000 times whilst making the video.)

Is this the genre of music you usually listen to?

This has shown us that the music wasn’t as popular as prior research implied and to have tried it out on the target audience first.

Were some written responses to this question.

“it’s a bit more ‘rocky’ than I usually listen to”

“A bit too repetitive”

The audience research has shown us that the prior research before making the products needed more to back it up. We should have done an audience questionnaire before we made them to see what they actually liked and not just assume off the current charts and record sales. We didn’t consider that people outside of our target audience could have voted also.
