Current Situation
Many mobile operators offer a portfolio of services
to generate voice revenues • Basic Calling (Class 5), Voicemail, RBT, IVR services, conferencing
Each service often came with own service platform
• with built-in media processing resources
Result is a proliferation of media resources in the
mobile network • Different capabilities, control interfaces, platforms, and vendors
• unused media ports as demand for particular application goes
down
4 Radisys Corporation Confidential
Triggers for Change
LTE leading to converged IP network for mobile industry
VoLTE driving need for IMS
• IMS provides opportunity for Common MRF strategy
Video services
• Existing media processing resources often don’t support video
Cloud deployment
• Increasing requirements for media processing in Cloud
OTT and carrier networks are blending/overlapping
• Internet users getting telecom services
• Telecom service providers reaching out to Internet users
Increasing requirements for reusable,
efficient media processing infrastructure

Radisys Common MRF The Foundation for many VoLTE and Video Services
Question?
What do all these
VoLTE and IMS services
have in common?
Answer:
They all share an
underlying need for
real-time IP-based
voice and video
RTP media processing
One Common MRF,
Shared amongst all IMS services.

Summary - Common MRF Strategy
VoLTE and IMS • Deploying VoLTE or IMS requires MRF that delivers features and
services across access networks and applications.
As you deploy other real-time LTE communication
services… • Business objective is efficient and scalable use of media resources
• Video, Conferencing, WebRTC, IVR services, plus many more…
– all can and should use same Common MRF
The more services that share the MRF,
the bigger the benefits

Summary – MRB Strategy
Current Situation
• MRF selection logic and Load Balancing often needs to be
Implemented into each Application.
• As number of applications and MRF nodes grows, Selective LB
logic becomes unwieldy to manage, while impacting MRF utilization
MRB
• Media Resource Broker (MRB) is an abstraction layer
between IMS applications and MRF resources.
• MRB dynamically manages state/load of each underlying MRF, as
well as capabilities of each MRF.
• Applications send All media processing request to one entity - the
MRB - simplifying the Application Logic
• Based on load, capability required, and geo location (amongst other
factors), the MRB then selects and forwards the AS media
processing request to the selected MRF

Summary
Common MRF
• Operator strategy to deploy with fewer MRF vendors in their IMS rollouts
• Application requirement to reuse common MRF, rather than adding different
MRF resources with each new application.
• Benefits
– Reduces operational complexity, improves MRF reuse
MRB
• Layer of abstraction between IMS applications and MRF resource pools
• Benefits:
– Simply AS design by moving MRF selection and load balancing into MRB
– Cost savings through resource utilization in geos outside peak periods
Radisys Value Proposition
• Radisys is #1 global MRF supplier for IMS industry.
– Our MRF portfolio provides Common MRF in HW, SW, or virtualized cloud
