Birthday Surprises
My birthday was coming up and I was getting worried. Dad is such a prankster that I never
know what to expect. One year he got a piñata, but didn’t put any candy in it. My friends
and I took turns smacking it with a stick and when it finally broke open, there was nothing
inside! Dad laughed at that one. Another year Dad gave me a giant present. I started to
unwrap it and inside was another present. And inside that was another present. Finally I got
to the last present and I unwrapped…a toothpick! He gave me my real gift later, but not before
he laughed and laughed at my tiny toothpick present. A few days before my birthday, Dad
starting walking around with a funny smile and I knew I was in for some trouble. My friends
arrived for the party and nothing happened. We played some games, but there were no tricks.
We ate pizza and everything was normal. I started to worry that maybe Dad hadn’t done a
birthday trick after all. I felt a little disappointed. I thought that I didn’t like Dad’s pranks, but
now that I wasn’t getting one I was sad. I realized Dad teases me because he loves me. His
pranks may give me headaches, but they also help me feel loved. Then it was time for cake.
We turned out the lights. Dad lit the candles and set the cake in front of me. Everyone sang. I
leaned over to blow out the candles. One by one all 9 went out. Then, one by one the candles
relit. I blew them again—harder this time. And again they relit. They were trick candles! The
lights were still out, but in the darkness I could hear Dad laughing. He really does love me!

Having a Ball
The game of basketball was invented over 100 years ago in 1891. Dr. James Naismith was a
PE teacher in Massachusetts. He was asked to invent a lively game that was easily learned, so
the students could play inside during the bitter winters. The sport Naismith invented looked
very different than basketball today. The first game was played with 9 players on each team
because Dr. Naismith had 18 students in his class. Today, there are only 5 players on each
team. The ball was a soccer ball and instead of nets they used actual baskets nailed to the
walls. Every time someone made a basket the janitor had to bring out the ladder and climb up
to get the ball out! Eventually a hole was made in the bottom of the basket so a stick could be
used to push the ball up and out. During the first game, they realized a name was needed for
this new sport. Someone suggested it be called Naismith Game after the inventor, but Dr.
Naismith disagreed. “We have a ball and a basket; why don’t we call it basketball?” The
name has stuck. Today children and adults all over the world enjoy playing basketball. It’s a
good way to exercise, but more than that, it’s an excellent way to have fun! Dr. Naismith
never made any money from his invention. Perhaps the next time you pick up a basketball you
can think of that PE teacher nailing baskets on the wall so long ago.
