It is widely believed that Y decided to build X after being refused an entry to Watson hotel as Y was an Indian.

Y then set up X in retaliation against this incident, deciding to build X even grander than Watson, where Indians will not be refused.

Y imported the same steel used in Eiffel Tower for X’s construction.

Amongst many other things, X is famous for its central floating staircase. It is also the first in India to operate a steam elevator.

The most popular side of X was in fact, built as its rear. Although few decades ago, the rear was made the new front.

THE ORIGINAL SEVEN ISLANDS

Salsette Island is an island in Maharashtra state on India's west coast. The word Sasashti (also shortened to Sashti) is Marathi for "sixty-six", referring to the original "sixty-six villages" on the island.

It is bounded on the north by a creek, on the northeast by a river, on the east by a creek, on the south and west by sea.

How is this island better known to us?

The pictures below depict Flora Fountain and a memorial. In 1960, Flora Fountain was officially renamed as ‘Hutatma

Chowk’, meaning ‘Martyrs’ Square’. The memorial depicts the statue of Martyrs with a flame. Why was it renamed?

8

SANYUKTA MAHARASHTRA MOVEMENT In January 1960, demonstrators were fired upon by the police

at Flora Fountain. Around 105 people were shot down. They were demonstrating for the partition of the State of

Bombay into Marathi speaking Maharashtra and Gujarati speaking Gujarat, with Mumbai as Maharashtra’s capital.

Hence, ‘Martyrs’ Square’

The term X is a portmanteau derived from Bombay and Y. However, unlike Y, X does not exist as a physical place. Though some deplore the name, arguing that it makes it look

like a poor cousin to Y, X has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary.

In modern architecture, an X is a large open space, often several stories high and having a glazed roof and/or large windows, often situated within an office building and usually located immediately beyond the main entrance doors. They are popular with companies because they give their buildings "a feeling of

space and light", but have been criticised by fire inspectors as they could allow fire to spread to a building's upper stories more quickly.

X AND Y? +30/-15

The Great Emperor X was a valorous king of the Ikshvaku dynasty. He was born to king Dilīpa and his queen Sudakshina. His name in Sanskrit means the fast one, deriving from his chariot driving abilities. So celebrated were the exploits of X, that his dynasty itself came to be known after him.

Y is a concept within Hinduism literally meaning "pastime", "sport" or "play". In the dualistic schools of Vaishnavism, Y more simply refers to the activities of God and his devotees, as distinct from the common activities of karma.

ZUNKA-BHAKAR

WHAT IS BEING TALKED ABOUT? It traces its history to the 1855, when four Gujaratis and one

Parsi would gather under banyan trees in front of Mumbai's Town Hall.

The location of these meetings changed many times, as the number of such people constantly increased. The group eventually moved to a more prominent location in 1874 and in 1875 became an official organization.

In 1956, it became the first of its kind in the country to be recognized by the Indian Government under the Securities Contracts Regulation Act.

In 1980 it moved to its present location. Historically an ‘open outcry floor’ type, it switched to an

electronic system in 1995.

WHAT IS BEING TALKED ABOUT?

Castella de Aguada is not its proper name. Properly, it should be called Castelo da Aguada, although it seems its Portuguese builders actually called it Forte de Bandorá.

It was built by the Portuguese in 1640 as a watchtower.

The strategic value of the fort was enhanced in 1661 after the Portuguese ceded the seven islands of Bombay that lay to the immediate south to the English.

It lies over several levels, from sea level to an altitude of 24 metres (79 ft).

M-INDICATOR!

X has a sheer vertical face and was formed when molten lava was squeezed out of the Earth's clefts during the Mesozoic Era about 65 million years ago.

According to experts, this rare geological phenomenon was the remnants of a ridge and had clusters of vertical columns in nearby area which were quarried off two decades ago. These vertical columns are similar to several others in USA.

X was declared a National Park in 1952 by the Central Government under the Forest Act. In 2007, after years of lobbying by geologists, the hill was declared a Grade II heritage structure by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), and all quarrying and other activities around the monument were prohibited. Over the period of time, X has faced severe erosion problems too.

Atop X, two Hindu temples, set in a small garden, are accessed by a steep carved staircase.
