Good Morning - Day 2

Monitoring and Evaluation

Break into two teams.

Using the alphabet write down words

which describe monitoring and

evaluation.

Brainstorm: Why is it important to

evaluate our projects?

www.leargas.ie

Magical things happen in a good project. Absorbed in

the making of a film, or a sculpture, or a scene from a

play, or a problem to solve… friendships form, skills

are built, a group of individuals become a team. And

you think…if people could just see this…

However, sometimes trying to capture that

magic can be difficult. This tool maps a range

of the outcomes that you can typically expect

in a youth arts project (though it is by no

means exhaustive) to help you decide the

priority outcomes you are hoping to see in your

project.

It supports you to measure progress when you

see it and think about how you will describe it.

The following tool 'The Outcome Tree' will

help you think about what outcomes you

want to promote and support at

the design stage of your project –

beginning with the end in mind!(This was a Youth Arts project)

CAPTURING MAGIC

A Tool for Evaluating

Outcomes in Youth

Arts Projects

(Ways to track and measure

the magic in your project!)

You can download the resource from the link above and

adapt it to your circumstances!

www.leargas.ie

This resource will help you measure the outcomes of your youth arts project.

This set of scales is specially designed to provide a series of observable

behaviours in a group of young people taking part in an arts project - particularly

in a youth work setting - takes account of the 5 National Outcomes for Young

People (Better Outcomes, Brighter Futures: The National Policy Framework for

Children and Young People 2014-2020, Dept of Children and Youth

Affairs,2014) and the 7 Potent Mechanisms for Delivering Improvements to

Targeted Youth Programmes (Value for Money and Policy Review of Youth

Programmes, Dept of Children and Youth Affairs, 2014).

Tool: Now design your own

Outcome Tree

Step 1:

Design your own Outcomes Map for your

own Project

www.leargas.ie

Step 2:

Description of Outcomes

For each heading and subheading you

will describe in more detail the desired

outcomes(for examples look from page 6 to 10 of the Capturing Magic)

www.leargas.ie

Step 3: Measuring OutcomesTo record the development of your group using a set of scales which you

develop for your own unique project!

When developing a set of scales think about what is specific to your

method/project/target group.

The scales will help you to see if the project is having an effect. Being

honest about the effect your project is having will help

you think about any improvements you might make or things you want to

keep the same.

Monitoring and Evaluation Plan

Mariola will take you through the plan.

Here are two templates/handouts and

make your M&E plan for your project!

www.leargas.ie

When talking about different evaluation

methods, what is your understanding of

qualitative and quantitative evaluation?

In groups explore these two types of

evaluation and write on post-its the

various methods used in both.

Workshop 3

In small groups discuss what you learned

from hearing about this best practice

project.

www.leargas.ie

To feed this info back to the plenary:

in your groups design the front page of a

newspaper from the future!

Make it fun and include the outcomes of

this project and how it has impacted our

future!
