WELCOME

Indian Education aims for

‘all round personality

development’ and

‘child centered education’.

However, in practice there has

been over emphasis on

academics and particularly on

exam results, even at Primary

level.

As a result

sports in education

suffered the most.

THERE REMAINS A BELIEF

‘Padoge likhoge banoge Nawab,

Kheloge kudoge hoge kharab.’

• Thinking Skills

• Problem Solving Skills

• Social Skills

• Working in a Team

• Emotionally healthy, balanced and

strong individual

• Technology Savvy

• Adaptable to change

THE REQUIREMENT OF 21ST

CENTURY

Indian Education

must respond

to the changing times.

FAVORITE

LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES

OF

CHILDREN

Boys love

to play

Computer

Games and

Chatting

on the

internet.

Girls love

to spend

time on

internet

and mobile

Parents allow

children to play till

they reach middle

school. Thereafter

they insist that

children should

pay attention only

to school studies,

private tuition and

coaching classes.

MY

OBSERVATIONS

When only ACADEMICS were

emphasized and little time was

given to cultural and sports

activities, the academic

performance of students was at its

lowest.

As the number of cultural activities increased

in the school academic performance became

better.

With the increase in sports activities the

academic performance reached its peak.

• It was also observed that the students

who excelled in sports at Primary level,

also excelled in academics at Primary

level and Senior level.

• All the students who excelled in

cultural activities at Primary level did

not excel in academics at higher level.

WHY A SPORTS PERSON EXCELS

IN ACADEMICS? • Their hormone (adrenaline) becomes more

active.

• The blood carries more oxygen to all the

organs including brain.

• The brain becomes a better processor of

information and data.

• The toxins of the body are eliminated through

sweat.

WHY A SPORTS PERSON EXCELS

IN ACADEMICS?(Contd.)

• Their body resistance improves and they

don’t fall sick often.

• They become emotionally strong and face

the challenges boldly.

• They learn to share and work as a team.

TO SUM UP :

Sports make a person

physically, emotionally and

mentally strong. A sportsman

learns to accept failures, doesn’t

give up, bounces back with zeal

and enthusiasm to compete.

SPORTS IMPROVES

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

• For hyperactive students sports provide a legitimate outlet otherwise they may indulge in undesirable activities.

• For a child who is less energetic, sports provide the necessary exercise to his muscles, rejuvenates the glands and hormonal system and also activates the metabolism.

SPORTS PROVIDE TOTAL

EDUCATION

• It helps in physical development,

• It helps in intellectual development,

• It makes children emotionally strong,

• It develops their communication and

social skills

In the absence of sports

A child is likely to become:-

• Obese

• Drug addict

• Argumentative

• Introvert

• Lethargic

• Undisciplined

• Disobedient

Obese

Argumentative

Introvert

In life, there are situations where we have to

either fight or quit.

Ultimately, the fighter reaches the top but the one

who quits is left behind to clap and cheer for the

success of the fighter.

Sports at Primary level develop the tendency to

fight at a young age which is difficult to develop at

a later stage.

SPORTS A CLEAR WINNER

The role of class

teacher in teaching

sports in Primary

Classes

THE ROLE OF A CLASS

TEACHER • Since sports are most important at the

primary level therefore their class teacher

who is their idol, plays a very important role.

• The child worships, follows and emulates

her. It is therefore necessary for her to take

active part in sports so that she can be

more effective role model.

THE ROLE OF A CLASS

TEACHER (Contd.)

Her participation not only keeps her fit,

active and healthy but also helps in

establishing a stronger bond with the child.

If you just teach, you have a strong bond.

If you go for excursions, you have a

stronger bond.

If you play with the child, you develop the

strongest bond which is for life.

( This is applicable for parents as well ).

If you just teach, you have a

strong bond.

If you go for excursions, you have a

stronger bond.

If you play with the child, you develop the

strongest bond which is for life

THE PERCEIVED PROBLEM

It appears that because of our cultural

and social background a class/ subject

teacher thinks that she cannot teach

Physical Education.

She thinks that neither she is physically fit

nor she knows the rules and regulations of

games, therefore, she would be a poor

sports teacher.

EASY SOLUTIONS

• From Sharon Kee and Carol Lukins we have learnt that

it is possible that the teachers at primary level can

easily be trained to teach physical education. A little

help, a little training, a little guidance and a lot of

encouragement is required.

• Inspired by Sharon Kee and Carol Lukins and the

initiative taken by The British Council ; Apeejay School,

Pitampura, experimented with the idea of involving

Primary teachers in Physical education in the academic

session 2008-09.

ACTIVE SUPPORT OF BRITISH

COUNCIL

The British Council helped us in

training the teachers. It also

provided us the material. It also

provided us the PEC cards which

made the task of teachers very

easy and interesting.

RESULTS

• The results were excellent. Class

Teachers felt that they became

physically fit, healthy and active.

Their medical bills went down.

• It was a happy break from the

routine classes.

• All children were involved in sports

• The students were happy.

THE PROBLEMS FACED

Initially to change the mindset

of teachers,

Arranging the time-table,

Procuring material for the

classes

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I thank British Council and

Ms Mona Shipley for

selecting Apeejay School,

Pitampura, for this

programme.
