Educating At-Risk and Special Boys : A Great

American Tragedy

Welcome.. Most Important School Mission!?

Fries has been around the block….Bus Driver to School Superintendent….Favorite Stops in 41 years of working with Boys has been Special Education Teacher (EI) and Middle School Principal

Sports…1973-2013

Is OUR $104,000 Investment the Most …

IMPORTANT……??? 13 years K-12 x $8,000 per

Student…..

LET’S SEE HOW IMPORTANT GRADUATION REALLY IS…..in 2015 ??

How about our Mission Statements ??

Michigan HS Vision/Mission Statements

Look Around….Check Any HS School OUT….NO ONE HAS GRADUATION IN THE HS

MISSION STATEMENT !!Troy High School seeks to provide both a comprehensive liberal

arts educational program and a specialized program of study for students of all abilities and backgrounds. At each stage of their development and in each pathway of study, students are being shaped into critical thinkers, effective communicators, good citizens, and lifelong learners. As such, they are encouraged to articulate and pursue a personal and professional vision for their own futures. Troy's educational community is committed to helping its students actualize these visions.

Michigan HS Vision Statements Part II

Check it Out….900 HS No one has GraduationIn the Mission or Vision Statement…!! Yikes !

OUR MISSION:Alpena High School is committed to a culture of excellence.

The Average Drop-out is during the Middle of his/her Junior Year..or $88,800 down the

DRAIN !!

Inside the World of Boys and Public School

What Do We Know About Boys…??

PK-12 American Schools have FAILED with many

Boys….??? Why ??

Middle Schools and HS have Failed even MORE !!

11 Boy Facts about dropping out of HS

See back of PP Handout……COMMUNITY ISSUES1.Homeless2.Lack of Transportation3.Lack of Appropriate Clothing4.Safety Concerns5.Had to Work

Once in School ??

Boys Report in School Issues1.BOREDOM2.LACK OF RELEVANCE3.TEACHERS DO NOT LIKE ME4.WORK IS TO HARD5.DEEMED A LOSER

Chap 5: Disengaged Dad’ Disorder (DDD)

Thousands of Boys are growing up without a DAD..

When things don’t go well…then do what most

High School Boys do……Disengage and Withdrawn

Each of these boys has a Huge Emotional Story

to tell !!

Why am I Here…What is the GOAL ??

We have a Huge Problem in Special Education… with males and IQ Scores above 70…..in

Michigan High Schools…we SIMPLY CANNOT GET

THIS POPULATION TO GRADUATE !!

AND IT IS EXAMINED AS A DROPOUT CRISES…

BUT IT IS A CLEAR GENDER ISSUE !! NOT IDENTIFIED AS SUCH….

NO ONE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT ..?

A CLEAR GENDER ISSUE….

AND THE INTERVENTION PLAN IS ALL OUT OFFAILURE TO ADDRESS THE SYSTEMIC ISSUE

TROUBLE WITH RELEVANT CURRICULUM

Special Education and Dropouts

65 Michigan High School Students will TERMINATE

High School Today. Based on 11% of the total number of Special Education students in

Michigan High Schools of the 68 only 11 should be Special Education. BUT TODAY of the 68 nearly 40% will be Special Education students or 27 students…this is a education FAILURE…

In MI for the 65 students dropping out ??

65 Dropouts Today….46 are BOYS….MOST of THESE WILL HAVE A LIFE OF

POVERTY….Many have had NO Transitional Planning that are Special Education….

Michigan and Local School Districts

DO WE HAVE EDUCATIONAL MALPRACTICE LITIGATION CASES IN MICHIGAN ???

YES…..NO……WHY………….??

Boys in America 2014

Boys in America are the most aggressive and violent

of any First World Country ! Today a Boy will shoot someone to

Death in the State of Michigan And Since Sandy Hook 54 School Shooting’s all doneby boys over age 14 !!

American HS & MS mission is CLEAR….???

Sort and Select Students….!!!

Therefore we have winners and losers…S/E Students and At Risk Students are often

on the short side…Thus rather than lose…it is easier to

dropout….!

Standards of BOY performance in Schools

WE HAVE IT ALL WRONG….!!

We look everyday for performance on Benchmarks

and Core Curriculum Standards

WHEN BOYS ARE SCREAMING for EMOTIONAL HELP !!

K-12 and Social Justice Issues…

Do we in the K-12 sector connect the dots on drop-outs and costs….??

Generally NOT….Currently we have 55,000 males locked up in the State of MI. Prison System at a cost of 2.0

billion per year or 22% of Michigan ENTIRE state

budget goes to the Dept. of Corrections (2nd Highest in

US) Note: As of 2014

The XY Code

Boysville and PK-12 SchoolsThe Sturdy Oak: Stoic, Strong, Independent &

StableThe Big Wheel: Status, Power & Dominance

No Sissy Stuff : No Expression of Feeling, Warmth, Empathy and EmotionGive them “Hell”: Daring, Bravado, Macho & High Energy

Five Major Reasons Why We have Failed XY

R1……The WARLOCK GENE

R2…..Lack of Motor Movement

R3…..Failure to Teach to Brain Difference XX v. XY

R4…. Little Male Role Models in PK-5

R5…..We Teach to IQ NOT EQ !!!

The WarLOCK Gene

10,000 Years of Wars…..started by XYGuns and Violence are part way of LifeIMAGES in Many places of Glass….support our self destructive waysA Society Built on outdated Stereotype’sIt begins with lack of Movement and

Disconnection First steps in HS Dropout…….Boys/Men Want Power !!!

Lack of Movement

Schools promote instruction defined by the state….

This is a new concept !!! Auditory Method of Instruction….(D-)What has happened to recess in PK-5 ???? 3 times a day to 1 short at LunchIntellectual Power is the Future NOT Physical Power….Parents have not learned this….Fine Motor Skills are slow go for XY (PK-4)

Brain Differences XY v XX

XY v XX have two different Brain Development Rates………………..

Girls Start faster and end sooner Girls think more and act Less Girls write better early and process Quicker Girls have less connections between left

and right brains…. Schools have MATCHED Instruction to GIRLS…..

Role Models in ES

XX Teachers Everywhere……………..

NO Sports in ES…………….

NO Supervision on the Cheese Wagon………….

NO Recess………………

PK -12 Teach to IQ NOT EQ

13 years of FFF*

Conflict Resolution is not in the course Offering’s

Respect, Kindness, Civility, and Manners are not

taught…in a formal method Real World Success is all ABOUT EQ !!!* Facts, Figures & Fudge

Running Uphill in Public Schools

System that WORKS AGAINST AT RISK BOYS !

1.Loss of Choice and Electives2.Testing starts to early…3rd Grade3.Lack of K-6 Role Models4.No Conflict Resolution Courses being Taught5.Lack of Movement in Classes6.Right Hemispheric Boys have little Avenues7.Communication from School is sometimes

Singular

Is There an Answer ???

The World…….???

If a BOY has the Warlock Gene…..then ???

Get Mandated Emotional Expression…….

High School Needs to L/R or a Niche !!!!!!

Age 19-49 !!

How do we get there ???

TO KEEP At RISK and SPECIAL EDUCATION BOYS IN SCHOOL…THEN NEED the Following:

1. Most Likely a PC2. A Home Base Advocate supporter at

SCHOOL3. A NICHE TO KEEP THE EGO GOING

4. 5 Years of HS if Needed and GREAT T/P

BEFORE ANY INSTRUCTION ??

START FROM SCRATCH !!!

THIS MEANS STRUGGLING BOYS NEED AN EGO NICHE ABOVE ALL ELSE !! INSTRUCTION IS MEANINGLESS IF THE FRAGILE EGO IS NOT ADRESSED !!

FORGET THE IEP GOALS UNTIL THE FRAGILE EGO HAS A IDENTIDY

What is the Answer for T/P ???

Leisure and Recreation !!!!!!

Examples: Bowling, Kite Flying, Walking in the Woods, Sea Shell Hunting, Musical Chairs, etc

WHAT MICHIGAN SCHOOLS Should DO ?
