M2M and Consumer Electronics
• M2M communication is important to Sony as a consumer electronics
manufacturer
– We expect that all of our consumer electronic products could potentially
incorporate some sort of M2M communication technology in the near future
• The current study in 3GPP on creating a lower cost version of LTE would • The current study in 3GPP on creating a lower cost version of LTE would
enable the entire M2M CE eco-system be built upon a single wireless
communication technology

Varying Requirements for M2M CE Communication
• Different M2M CE applications have different requirements
• For wide deployment and success, M2M CE communication requires one single
communications technology that can satisfy a wide range of requirements
– Not desirable to have multiple communications technologies that only satisfy
parts of the requirements, can not pile on extensive number of wireless techs
• Key Requirements for M2M CE Communication; Ubiquitous Connectivity, Cost, Ease
of Use, Longevity, Security
• Is there a single communication technology that can encompass all of the varying
M2M CE Requirements??

vs.
• Two main types for commercial wireless communication: PAN/LAN and WAN
• Wireless PAN/LAN technologies for M2M can cause;
– Coverage Holes : no control over which PAN/LAN deployed at consumer’s location
– Difficult Setup : not easy for some consumers to set up own PAN/LAN networks
– Security Risk : networks set up by consumers may not be secure

• LTE is now being rolled out (LTE-A later, also) and is expected to dominate in
future, providing longevity similar to CE devices
• Current LTE will satisfy the requirements of high-end CE devices (e.g. LCD TVs) but
may be an over spec for others (e.g. portable audio player and other M2M
applications)
• To fill in this gap, an initiative to provide a low cost version of LTE is underway in
3GPP

Study of Low Cost LTE
• A study for low-cost LTE is on-going in 3GPP
since September 2011
• The initiative attracted support from
numerous global operators, chipset,
infrastructure and terminal vendors and CE

How to Achieve Low Cost LTE
• 3GPP has studied the cost of each component in an LTE modem and
evaluated methods to reduce them
• Identified approaches
– Reduction of Bandwidth
• Less computational effort
– Hardware simplification

– Hardware simplification
• Just one receive hardware chain
• No simultaneous transmit and receive
– Reduction of Transmit Power
• Fewer hardware stages and/or cheaper hardware
– Reduction of Peak Rate
• Less computational effort and cheaper hardware

Coverage Enhancement Low Cost LTE
• Coverage requirement may be more stringent
for M2M CE than conventional H2H
communication
– Some M2M CE can not be moved easily
– e.g. need to connect to TV in a basement
• 3GPP will investigate ways to enhance low • 3GPP will investigate ways to enhance low
cost LTE so that it can provide required
coverage for M2M Devices
• Potential methods may be;
– Repetition
– Increased transmission power/antenna
– Stronger coding
– More nodes
– etc.
