Lions Gate Christian Academy
Parent and Student Handbook
2015/2016
Mission Statement Lions Gate Christian Academy seeks to provide
quality Christian education
which complements efforts of home and church.
Our goal is to teach children to know and walk with God
that they may influence their home, country and world.
Lions Gate Christian Academy is an independent, interdenominational Christian school founded in
1994. We teach from an evangelical Christian perspective. A Biblical worldview is integrated into
curricula, challenging students to think and act Christianly. The school is committed to providing
quality Christ-centered education to students on the North Shore.
Lions Gate Christian Academy is fully accredited with the Ministry of Education of the Province of
British Columbia. All teachers are BC certified. The school offers excellent programs of study from
Kindergarten through Grade 12.
At LGCA
We know your kids.
We love them and
We teach them!
As we begin our 21st year, and as we settle into our new venue, our scripture theme this year is
from Philippians 4:9:
And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
A. VISION AND BELIEFS
1. Purpose
Lions Gate Christian Academy exists to educate children in an environment where the truths
from God’s Word are central to everything being taught. The school’s role is to support and
enhance the teaching of the home and church.
2. Basic Beliefs
The Bible directs us to educate our children according to God’s Truth. God’s Word directs our
lives and guides us in establishing our understanding of God, man and the world.
Statement of Faith
Although the school is comprised of students from many denominational backgrounds, the
Christian beliefs that are foundational to this school are based on God’s Word.
We Believe
All Scripture is inspired by God, and in its entirety, the Bible is the authoritative word of
God.
There is one God eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary and is true God and
true Man.
Man, created in the image of God, sinned and thereby incurred both physical and spiritual
death. All human beings are liable to eternal punishment and are unable to save themselves.
Jesus Christ, God’s Son, died on the cross as a perfect sacrifice for our sins; He rose again,
appeared to men and ascended into Heaven to be with His Heavenly Father.
Salvation is the gift of God’s love, through faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ. As
believers we are forgiven, made new, given eternal life and kept by personal faith in Jesus
Christ.
The Holy Spirit lives in believers and empowers them to walk in purity of life, submitting to
the will of God.
Mission Statement
It is the mission of Lions Gate Christian Academy to provide quality Christian education that
complements the efforts of the home and the church. Our goal is to teach children to know and
walk with God so that their influence will be realized in the home, the community and the
world.
3. Purpose and Goals of Education
The purpose of Christian education is to direct and guide the child towards a saving knowledge
and trust in Jesus Christ, the Truth; to attain understanding, wisdom and righteousness; and to
lead to responsible service to God and mankind in all areas of life.
The curriculum and the methods of instruction seek to meet the needs of the whole child by:
Helping the child know he/she is a special person created by God for a special purpose;
Giving direction to the students by helping them understand the nature of sin and its effect
on all creation, and how God, by His plan of salvation through Jesus Christ redeems His
people;
Developing the students’ skills in all subject areas for the purpose of furthering their
education and worshipping and glorifying God the Father;
Teaching students how to examine and use information from a Christian perspective;
Encouraging students to develop Christian behaviors and attitudes which create a desire for
life-long learning;
Encouraging students to pursue excellence in their course work and obedience to God as
productive citizens;
Encouraging students to interpret all subjects in the light of God’s Word; and
Teaching the provincial curriculum from a Christian perspective.
Lions Gate Christian Academy does not exist to protect or separate students from the world. We
recognize that Christian students are in the world but not of it; therefore the school will equip and
challenge students to critique the world’s presuppositions based on God’s Word.
4. History of Lions Gate Christian Academy On September 6, 1994, Lions Gate Christian Academy opened with 15 students from grades K -
3. Additional grades were added following the school’s opening. The school rented facilities in
the North Shore Alliance Church and in 1999 LGCA also rented facilities in the Mount Olivet
Lutheran Church. As of August 2, 2004, we relocated to the closed Maplewood Community
School at 420 Seymour River Place. The summer of 2010 saw Lions Gate Christian Academy
community move into our own buildings on leased land at 925 Harbourside Drive in North
Vancouver. The 2011/2012 school year marked our first K – 12 year. In June 2012, we
celebrated LGCA’s first graduating class… the Grad Class of 2012! We are now settling into a
ten-year lease with SD44 for a more permanent home at 919 Tollcross Road. We continue to
excel academically with 100% graduation rate and placing well within the top 10% of the
province’s schools.
5. An Excellent School
Lions Gate Christian Academy is a school with high expectations for its students. Excellence in
academics, sports, fine arts and character development are all emphasized. Excellence in every
aspect of school life prepares student for a life of servant leadership to God and people.
6. Staff of Lions Gate Christian Academy
Our teachers have a tremendous impact on the lives of their students. They play the most
significant role in making our school a Christian school. Our teachers are committed Christians
who desire to serve the Lord by nurturing children. They are concerned with the intellectual,
spiritual, emotional, social and physical development of each student. As Christ-centered
teachers, they teach from a biblical perspective, seeing all truth as God’s truth. Our staff is fully
qualified and certified to teach within the public and independent schools of British Columbia.
B. ORGANIZATION
1. Board of Directors
Authority for Lions Gate Christian Academy administration lies with the Board of Directors.
This Board of Directors is a self-perpetuating Board. The Board oversees the functioning of the
school by setting policies and by being the decision making body for all financial matters and
capital projects. All committees are responsible to work under the supervision of the principal.
The principal of the school carries out the administrative functions in accordance with the
policies adopted by the Board. The Board of Directors meets monthly.
The Board’s duties are as follows:
to develop school policies that support Christian education;
to hire a principal to administrate the school under the guidelines set out in the board
policies; and
to promote Christian education on the North Shore.
2. School PAC
The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) works with the principal to assist the school. The
purpose of the LGCA PAC is:
to enhance communication between the parents, staff, administration and board of LGCA;
to provide community activities for special events determined by the PAC Executive with
input from parents staff and administration;
to establish and oversee such committees as are deemed necessary to assist in the
effectiveness of the school; and
to organize PAC activities and events.
3. Admissions
The principal meets with parents applying to the school, and interviews the parents to:
ensure that at least one parent is a committed Christian, (Special consideration may be given
to unique and special cases);
answer questions regarding the school; and
ensure that the parents accept the school’s view of Christian education.
As part of the admissions process, students may be interviewed/evaluated by the principal.
4. Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI)
Our school is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), which
is a support organization for Christian schools.
5. Federation of Independent Schools Association (FISA)
Our school is a member of FISA. This organization represents independent school groups
as a voice for the members between schools, the government and other educational
institutions.
C. SCHOOL COMMUNITY
1. Guidelines for Parents
Lions Gate Christian Academy exists to educate the children of Christian parents according to
Christian values. It is of prime importance that Christian values based on Biblical truth are
taught and reinforced in the home. The foundations of a strong Christian home are the diligent
study of the Bible and constant attention to prayer. These values need to be both taught and
modeled for children. Strong parental support and communication between the home and the
school are essential to ensure that the Christian education received at school is as meaningful
and effective as possible.
2. Community Working Together
Active Parental Involvement
Parents are encouraged to become involved in many areas of the school, for example: working
with students, assisting with field trips, coaching sports teams, working on established
committees, prayer support, and volunteering talents and abilities.
Parental Encouragement
Parents are encouraged to help their children enjoy and profit from their learning experience by:
showing interest in what children do at school daily;
supporting the work being done at the school;
training children to pray for their fellow students, teachers and the school as a whole;
attending school functions and meetings;
showing respect for the staff and school; and
keeping open lines of communication with the teachers to work together in harmony.
Parents who are positive about what happens at Lions Gate Christian Academy will actively
promote our school in the community.
Newsletters
Weekly electronic school newsletters keep parents informed of school activities and business.
Newsletters are an important means of communicating with parents. They are posted on the
website at www.lgca.ca.
Communication with the Home
Contact with parents regarding their children’s progress is an important part of our program.
Apart from formal reports and conferences, teachers communicate with parents verbally, by
email and often through informal reports.
Fundraising
Parents are encouraged to support and participate in fundraising activities. The school seeks to
be sensitive to the families regarding the number of fundraising activities that are held during
the year. As we want to be good stewards of God’s provision/blessing, the school will tithe
(10%) of the funds raised to ministry/missions projects.
Orientation Opportunities
Early in the year a PAC community builder and a “Meet the Teacher” evening are held. LGCA
families have an opportunity to reconnect and get to know new families.
Kindergarten Orientation
Each June all new Kindergarten parents are invited to an information meeting. At this time all
incoming Kindergarten students meet with the Kindergarten teacher.
Parents-In-Touch
This prayer group meets on campus once a week when school is in session. If you would like to
attend, contact the school office, office@lgca.ca for the details of when and where the group
meets.
Concerns
Parents who have school concerns should first approach the person involved. Matthew 18:15 is
the Biblical principle. “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between
the two of you.”
Parents are to seek to resolve the matter with the person or persons involved. If the issue
concerns a teacher, parents are asked to speak directly with the teacher before pursuing it with
the Principal. If the issue cannot be resolved, then it should be discussed with the Principal.
Our purpose is to improve the situation as early as possible. If there is still no resolution then
the parent may ask the principal for a copy of LGCA's appeals policy.
Our mindset is that to resolve a concern, we should involve the least number of people as
possible. At no time should a parent spread criticism or hold a negative attitude.
D. ADMISSIONS, ENROLLMENT AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION
1. Admission for New Students
Admission is available to children living with at least one Christian parent. The parent(s) must
be in agreement with the basic beliefs of this school and be supportive of the school’s Christian
program of instruction. The parent must recognize that there may be situations where the
school lacks the resources to meet special needs.
Required Application Fees
Please consult our website at www.lgca.ca for current fees. There is a non-refundable
application fee for new students. Details are available on the website.
2. Enrollment
Parents interested in sending their children to Lions Gate Christian Academy should:
Obtain an ADMISSIONS PACKAGE and read each item carefully.
Complete the package and submit it to the school office along with the required fee.
Parents must realize that enrollment at Lions Gate Christian Academy is a privilege, and if
we foresee a situation where a child’s conduct will be in conflict with the direction of the
school, the student will not be admitted.
3. Re-registration of Current Students In order to plan for the following school year, re-registration for returning students is necessary.
Parents are required to submit the form to the school office by April 1st. A re-registration fee is
required and this fee is non-refundable.
Parents must be aware that if a child’s conduct is in conflict with the direction of the school and
if it is believed that continuing attendance would be detrimental to the school, the student may
not be re-admitted. Students must accept the responsibility of student-hood and prove to be a
good member of the student body both in and out of the classroom. Re-enrollment is not solely
dependent on the discipline process, but is determined by the student’s ability to meet the above
criteria. When re-enrollment is not granted, parents may ask the principal for the appeals
policy.
4. Financial Information
Tuition
Tuition fees at Lions Gate Christian Academy include a family rate for children in the same
immediate family. Each year in the spring, the Board of Lions Gate Christian Academy sets the
rates for the following year. Our tuition payment policy is that monthly payments be made by
automatic debit to your bank account. You may also pay tuition fees annually in advance by
September 1, of each new school year resulting in a small reduction.
Parents should be advised that the government portion of the funding of student fees is linked to
a student’s attendance. Students who miss over 20 school days up to and including May 15th
reduce the funding to the school. When this occurs, parents may be asked to make up the lost
portion so as not to jeopardize the school’s budget. Consideration will be given to special and
unusual circumstances that have resulted in a student’s absenteeism.
Related School Fees
Some regular, curricular field trips are largely covered in the tuition fee. School photos, hot
lunches, sports teams’ participation, yearbooks and Elements Outdoor Education Program are
additional costs that parents are asked to provide.
Uniform
All families enrolling a child in Lions Gate Christian Academy must purchase the appropriate
school uniform for that child. There is both a required formal and an optional informal uniform.
Cambridge and Company located at #135 1305 Welch Street, North Vancouver, Telephone No:
604-924-9009, is our suppliers for uniforms. They have the requirements for both formal and
informal uniforms.
School Photos
During the year, parents are able to purchase both student and class pictures.
Textbooks
Students are assigned textbooks by the classroom/subject teacher. If students damage or lose a
textbook, they are assessed a replacement fee. Students will not be issued a replacement until
the fee is paid. Refunds will be given if lost textbooks are found &returned in good condition.

F. OPERATIONAL POLICIES
1. Student Code of Conduct
At Lions Gate Christian Academy, the underlying principle for all student behavior is found in
Mark 12: 30-31. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is
no commandment greater than this.
At Lions Gate Christian Academy, we believe that all children have the right to learn in a safe,
caring and orderly environment. Our expectations are that students will maintain an attitude that is
cooperative, courteous and respectful.
This Code of Conduct is designed to provide guidelines for appropriate student behavior while
under the jurisdiction of LGCA, while at any school-sanctioned function. Students have a
responsibility to respect the rights and dignity of others and to become actively involved in their
own academic learning, social and spiritual growth.
Demonstrate Mutual Respect
Be Respectful to our God and His Creations.
Be Respectful to Yourself by:
caring about your learning;
making good choices;
being on time equipped and ready to learn; and
wearing your uniform appropriately with school pride.
Be Respectful to Others by:
being considerate of the property and feelings of others;
being polite and courteous;
demonstrating good listening skills;
being honest and speaking the truth; and
conducting yourself in a manner, which never compromises the safety or well-being of others.
Be Respectful to Property by:
caring about LGCA and the school environment;
cleaning up after yourself; and
taking good care of learning materials and resources, both your own and others.
Be Safe by:
staying in designated playground areas;
walking inside the building and in high traffic areas outdoors; and
reporting potentially unsafe situations to staff.
Try Your Best
In Academics by:
staying organized – use your agenda daily;
completing homework assignments thoroughly and conscientiously;
preparing for tests and exams;
seeking help when needed; and
attending school regularly.
In All School Activities by:
participating in extra-curricular activities;
encouraging others in their endeavors; and
leading through serving.
In Personal Christian Growth by:
avoiding inappropriate behavior such as but not limited to:
- rudeness, swearing, coarse language
- fighting or play fighting
- teasing, bullying* (in any form), threatening or intimidating
- defiant behavior and insolence
- lying or cheating
- retribution against a person who has reported unsafe incidents
avoiding misuse of but not limited to:
- cyberspace
- cell phones
- iPads/iPods
- computers (students sign a computer use agreement)
- other electronic devices
- Note that electronic devices are only to be used for school purposes while at school and
on school-sanctioned trips and activities. If misused, a teacher, supervisor or
administrator may confiscate the device.
not tolerating the following but not limited to:
- theft or vandalism
- violence or abuse in any form
- discrimination in any form
- possession of any illegal items or substances
- engaging in any illegal activities
Forms of unacceptable conduct cited above are only some examples and not an all-inclusive
list. Bullying is any pattern of persistent, unwelcome or aggressive behavior intended to make
others uncomfortable, scared or hurt. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to
peace and to mutual edification. – Romans 14:19
Bible References
Our Code of Conduct and student expectations are based on the following scriptures:
1 Peter 2:13-18 – respect those in authority over us
Colossians 3:12-13 – respect peers
Psalm 139 – respect ourselves
Ephesians 5:1-2 – Christian love in practical relations with others
Ephesians 4:25-29 and Ephesians 5:4 – honest and controlled speech
Ephesians 6:7 – we serve a living God in all we do!
Notification and Consequences
As circumstances warrant, administrators have a responsibility to advise other parties following a
behavior incident. When we apply the following steps, it is our hope that the child will personally
admit to the wrong, repent and change his/her behavior and seek and receive forgiveness as
appropriate. We also trust parents/guardians will support LGCA in seeking positive solutions.
1. Students will be addressed, counseled and warned as necessary. Depending on the situation and
frequency, parents may be informed.
2. If no improvement is evident, parents will be contacted by administration outlining expectations and
behavioral changes necessary.
3. If no improvement is evident, a parent-student-teacher administration conference will be held.
4. If no improvement is evident, the student will be placed on a formal probationary program for 1 – 2
weeks. This is an attempt to correct student behavior. This will include administrative and staff
evaluation of the student’s progress.
5. If no improvement is evident, a 1 – 5 day suspension (usually in-school, however this depends on
the circumstances and events) will be imposed.
6. If no correction is evidenced after the in-school and/or out-of-school suspensions, it is an indication
that the student does not wish to be part of Lions Gate Christian Academy and therefore the
student/parents will be asked to withdraw. When parents and/or their children cannot support the
philosophy and policies of the school, both will be asked to withdraw from the school.
Note: Situations may be dealt with on an individual basis as strategies are attempted. Involvement
with any illegal/criminal activity will shortcut the procedure above since there will be police
involvement. Consequences will focus on being restorative rather than punitive in nature. Grace will
always be a component of discipline at LGCA. There is an appeal policy available from the school
office.
Lions Gate Christian Academy Code of Conduct
Our Code of Conduct is structured to align with and adhere to the standards outlined in

Punctuality and regular attendance should become definite character traits of all students.
Valuable learning is lost when students arrive late.
When a student is absent, please inform the school before 8:30 a.m. on the day of the
absence. Parents/Guardians must also send a note explaining the reason for the absence
with their child, when he/she returns to school. These notes are kept on file for examination
by the BC Ministry of Education Independent personnel. Our funding grant is based on
attendance.
9. Excessive Absence
More than six absences per reporting period (18 absences per year) is regarded as excessive and
may jeopardize a student passing the year. Each case will be handled on an individual basis.
10. Late Arrivals
In the morning a student is considered to be late when he/she is not fully prepared and in
homeroom by the start of the day at 8:40 a.m. Persistent lateness will result in a meeting with
parents to solicit their cooperation and to avoid a possible consequences.
11. Leaving School Early
Parents are asked to arrange medical and other appointments outside school hours. If for some
reason a student must leave during the school day, a note must be provided and the office
contacted by the home one day in advance.
12. Leaving School Grounds
No students may leave the campus at any time without parent/teacher permission. Parents must
inform the teacher if their child has permission to leave the school at recess or lunch. Grade 10-
12 students made walk off school grounds for lunch at designated locations with parent
permission. These students must be with a fellow student and sign in and out to retain this
privilege.
13. Absence and Student Responsibility
When a student is absent, it is expected that he/she (age appropriate) will inquire about missed
work, upcoming tests and assignments. Following a return from an absence, a student has the
responsibility to contact his/her teacher(s) as soon as possible to receive any work that was
missed.
14. Parental Withdrawal of Student
Please provide a notice in writing one month in advance of your intention to withdraw your
child. Explain your reasons for making this decision. Tuition payment will continue for the
complete month following notice of withdrawal.
15. Dress and Grooming
The purpose of the school uniform and dress code is to ensure that students maintain a pleasing
external appearance and thereby help foster a favorable social atmosphere within the school.
Students are expected to be in full uniform at all times at school, while departing from and
arriving at school, and on all formal occasions at which parents and other guests are present.
Summer uniforms may be worn for September - October and April - June. The winter uniform
must be worn from November 1st to March 31st. See Appendix at the end of this Handbook for
specifics.
Hair must be clean and well groomed. Bizarre hairstyles and colors, etc., are inappropriate, a
distraction and therefor unacceptable. Hair accessories worn should be small and in school
colors. (blue, grey, maroon, white)
16. Jewelry
Jewelry should be kept to a minimum. For girls, earrings and accessories must be kept small
and suitable to wear with the uniform. One earring per ear is permitted. Boys are not permitted
to wear earrings at school.
17. Makeup
Students in Grades K - 7 are not permitted to wear makeup at school. For students in Grade 8
and up, makeup, if worn, is to be kept to a minimum. The goal is not to be a distraction to
others.
18. Tattoos and Piercing
We expect that students will not have tattoos nor body piercings (other than girls’ earlobes).
19. Gum Chewing
Gum chewing on school property is not allowed. This policy is enforced so that unnecessary
hours of work for the janitor are eliminated. In addition, we encourage students to bring healthy
snacks and lunches and to avoid too much sugar. Please bring a water bottle daily.
20. Valuables
Students are responsible for the care and safety of their personal belongings. The school cannot
accept responsibility for lost or stolen articles.
21. Injuries
In the event of an accident or illness, the school will phone parents/guardians. If the school is
unable to contact the parent at home or work, we will phone the emergency contacts as listed on
the medical forms. In extreme cases, a student requiring immediate medical attention will be
taken to the nearest clinic or to Emergency at Lions Gate Hospital or an ambulance will be
called. Ordinarily, the student will be kept at school until the parent or contact arrives.
22. Telephone
Parents are asked to restrict in-calls for students to important messages which should be left
with the office personnel whenever possible. Students may use the school phone only for
emergency calls and with permission. The phone is not to be used by students at any time to
arrange for after school play dates. Those arrangements should be organized by parents prior to
the event.
23. Pets
Pets are not to be brought into the classroom unless authorization has been given by the teacher.
Students with allergies, etc. must be given every consideration. Remember mutual respect!
24. Personal Electronic Devices
These should not be brought to school, school functions, or taken on school trips, unless
administrative permission has been granted. Cell phones must be turned off and kept out of
classrooms unless specifically used for the subject at hand e.g. graphing calculator functions for
Math.
25. Emergency School Closure
In the event of school closure, an announcement will be made over CKNW (98 on the AM dial)
and CKWX News (1130 on the Am dial). Check the website (www.lgca.ca) for information as
well.
26. Bibles
All students from grades three and up are required to purchase a school student NIV Study
Bible from the school. This particular Bible has been selected because of the special study
helps, maps, etc.
G. STUDENT LIFE AND EXPECTATIONS
1. Student Work
Homework is not an option but an obligation and should be submitted on time.
Cheating in any form is a serious offense, whether it is copying work, plagiarizing, taking cheat
notes into an examination or using the work done by a student in a previous year. The
automatic penalty for cheating is a loss of all marks for that assignment. If a student knowingly
assists another to cheat, he/she will receive the same penalty.
2. Grading and Reporting Procedures
The report card is the primary means of communicating the results of evaluation. Report cards
are issued three times a year, evaluating work habits and attitudes as well as indicating
achievement levels when appropriate.
In addition to the regular term reports, teachers may send home interim reports, emails or call
by phone. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of parent teacher conferences formally
scheduled twice a year.
Letter Grades
At the Primary level, the following letter grades will be used.
VG = Very Good
G = Good
S = Satisfactory
NI = Needs Improvement
PI = Parent Interview Requested
N/A = Not Applicable at Present
Wherever letter grades are used at the Intermediate or High School level, their percentage
equivalents are as follows:
A 86% - 100% Excellent
B 73% - 85% Very Good
C+ 67% - 72% Above Average
C 60% - 66% Average
C- 50% - 59% Pass
I 49% or less Incomplete (An F for fail will follow if the I is not
completed at a passing level.)
3. Promotion Policy
The general policy is to promote all students with an organized plan to build the deficient
blocks in the next class. Discussions with staff and parent are necessary. After careful
consideration and close consultation with parents, a student may not be promoted. However,
age, emotional state etc, is always taken into consideration.
4. Special Education Policy
Admission criteria for registering students with special needs is dependent on enrolment (room
available in the appropriate grade level classrooms) and the ability of LGCA to prepare and
deliver a viable educational program for that student.
At Lions Gate Christian Academy, we purpose to give all our students equitable access to
learning, a variety of opportunities for achievement, and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects
of their education. We adapt and/or modify educational programs for our students with special
needs such as disabilities of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional, or behavioral nature,
or have a learning disability or have exceptional gifts or talents.
5. School Completion Policy
Lions Gate Christian Academy students with special needs whose programs include
modifications to Ministry of Education’s student learning outcomes may be awarded a School
Completion Certificate. The evaluation of success completion of goals imbedded in the IEP will
be a school-based team decision. Students receiving School Completion Certificates may also
receive transcripts showing all successfully completed credit and non- credit Grades 10-12
courses.

letter and numerical value of the challenge exam will be recorded on student’s transcript as the
completed course mark.
If students wish to challenge for credit in language courses that LGCA does not offer, for
instance Mandarin, we will arrange for them to write a challenge exam with one of the local

available to others. If a library book is found to be offensive to a student or parent, please speak
to the librarian. Students are responsible for replacing all damaged or lost books by paying a
replacement fee to the library.
9. Visitors
We prefer that arrangements for visitors into the classroom be made at least one day in advance
through the office. We ask that all visitors to the school sign in at the office upon arrival.
10. Lost and Found A general Lost and Still Lost table is located near the office and in the high school gym. Small
items (keys, glasses, etc.) are kept in the school office. We stress the importance of having all
items clearly labeled to assist in the return of lost items.
11. Athletics and Inter-school Sports
Athletics plays a vital role in the life of students and the school. Check the Athletics link on our
website for up to date information regard athletics at LGCA.
12. Computers
Lions Gate Christian Academy has a computer room available to students with controlled
access to the Internet. A very restrictive firewall is installed on the system.
13. Chapel All students attend chapel one morning during the week. Parents are also invited to attend. It is
a time of worship and a challenge from God’s word.
H. THE CURRICULUM
Christian teachers teach from a biblical perspective, seeing all truth as God’s truth. Through the
various subject areas, students develop a fuller understanding of God and are assisted in
identifying the differing views of the secular world. God is glorified in the subject areas.
Students are encouraged to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to mature in
their faith as they develop a Christian worldview.
1. Conceptual Statements
Fine Arts are an important part of life and God is glorified through these subjects. Art,
music and drama are used to develop students’ abilities as a means of communicating God to
people. The school has the task to nurture the creative abilities in the students so they respond
artistically in conceptual and skill development.
Science is taught to show the orderliness of God’s world. Genesis is the beginning point in the
study of science. God’s plan is discovered and studied as we learn about His creation order
(Isa. 28:23-29). Students learn of their role as stewards of God’s creation. Science is a part of
knowledge that aids us in understanding God and His world, and is not viewed as the final
authority. Students must understand their responsibility to use scientific knowledge in a God
honoring way.
Mathematics is an integral part of God’s creation, subject to His laws. God’s creation becomes
the workshop in which children learn. This enables them to marvel at God’s greatness.
Concepts of numbers and space are developed from everyday experiences. Mathematics is
dependent on other disciplines by contributing to the unity of all aspects of Creation.
Mathematics is taught to show the precise orderliness of God’s world.
Social Studies
Within God’s created order, man is a relational being where a sense of community is important.
Social Studies focuses primarily on how man in relationship with others is directing cultural
development. Fostering an understanding of cultural development and diversity is the primary
aim of this subject. One’s faith will determine how he/she lives within a specific culture.
Students also study the physical, economic, social, political and aesthetic aspects of cultural
phenomena. How these aspects come together in a culture will influence the worldview of the
people within the culture. This study represents the central thrust of the Social Studies
curriculum.
Language Arts
God has given man the ability to relate to and communicate with others. This action includes
but is not limited to language instruction. Language instruction involves phonics, structural
principles or grammar, and the study of semantics or meanings of words. Also included in this
study is expressive skills, spelling, exposition, description, narration, argumentation,
interpretation and listening. Reading and the study of literature enables students to develop
decoding and comprehension skills.
Physical Education
The belief behind the physical education program is “Therefore honor God with your body”
(I Cor.6:20). The purpose of physical education is to assist students in developing their motor
abilities, health and fitness levels and understanding of specific skills activities.
Physical fitness and good health influence emotional health and mental abilities. An important
aspect of physical education is the development of wholesome lifelong activities. Physical
fitness is one way of equipping students for responsible service to the Lord.
Note: The policies of this handbook may be changed at any time. In such an event, the
changes will be published in the school newsletter or a revision of the handbook.

fees and maintenance of non-educational school programs including parent and
volunteer participation and fundraising.

Lions Gate Christian Academy may use anonymous information, such as information collected through
surveys or statistical information regarding students, to constantly improve our school.
When May Information be Disclosed?
Lions Gate Christian Academy may disclose an individual’s personal information to others in
connection with the purpose for which it was collected, as consented to by the individual, or as required
or permitted by law. The following are some examples of how Lions Gate Christian Academy may
disclose personal information
When Authorized by You
Other educational institutions routinely contact the school for personal information about
students. For example, if a student moves to another school, college or university,
student records are requested by the enrolling institution. Your permission to pass on
these records is usually obtained when the student is registered and you authorize the
school to disclose such information to other appropriate educational institutions for the
ongoing education of the student.
Contact information may be used to enable the school to provide the para-educational
and administrative services usually operated by the school. These services include
phoning committees, participation groups, parent meetings, fundraising, events, annual
general meetings, etc.
In some cases, when communication is over the telephone, your consent to the use and/or disclosure of
your information will be obtained verbally. In other cases such as when you communicate through e-
mail, your consent will be obtained electronically.
When Required by Law
The type of information the school is legally required to disclose most often relates to family court
issues, legal proceedings, court orders and government tax reporting requirements. Student information
as per Form 1701 is annually filed with the Ministry of Education. Only the information specifically
requested is disclosed and the school takes precautions to satisfy itself that the authorities making the
request have legitimate grounds to do so.
When Permitted by Law
The school is legally permitted to disclose some personal information in situations such as an
investigation of illegal activities, reasonable methods to collect overdue accounts, a medical emergency
or suspicion of illegal activities, etc. Only pertinent information is disclosed.
The school does not sell, lease or trade information about you to other parties.
Outside Service Suppliers
At Lions Gate Christian Academy, the school sometimes contacts outside organizations to perform
specialized services such as printing, student assessments, market research or data processing. For
example, the school gives its yearbook publisher the information required to produce the annual
yearbook. Suppliers of specialized services are given only the information necessary to perform those
services, and Lions Gate Christian Academy takes appropriate steps to ensure that such information is
securely transferred and stored and is used only to fulfill the purposes for which it was disclosed to the
service provider.
Restricting Sharing Information
If you choose to limit the sharing of your personal information, please contact the school office and
submit a written letter specifying which items of personal information you wish to limit, and to whom
you wish these items to be restricted. Please remember that certain agencies, by law, have access to
certain types of personal information.
How Long Is Personal Information Retained?
Personal information will only be retained for the period of time required to fulfill the purpose for
which it was collected. Once the personal information is no longer required to be retained to fulfill the
purposes for which it was collected and is no longer required or permitted to be retained for legal or
business purposes, it will be destroyed or made anonymous.
Principle 6 – Accuracy
Lions Gate Christian Academy will take appropriate steps to ensure that personal information collected
by Lions Gate Christian Academy is as accurate and complete as is reasonably required in connection
with the purposes for which it was collected, used or disclosed.
How May I Update Outdated or Incorrect Information?
An individual may, upon written request to Lions Gate Christian Academy, request that Lions Gate
Christian Academy correct an error or omission in any personal information that is under Lions Gate
Christian Academy’s control and LGCA will, as appropriate, amend the information as requested and
send the corrected personal information to each third party to which it has disclosed the information
during the preceding year.
Principle 7 – Safeguarding Personal Information
Lions Gate Christian Academy will protect personal information by security safeguards that are
appropriate to the sensitivity level of the information.
The School’s Employees
In the course of daily operations, access to personal information is restricted to authorized employees
who have a legitimate reason for accessing it. For example, teachers will have access to personal
information about students but not your account with the school. Employees are appropriately educated
about the importance of privacy and they are required to follow the
school’s policies and procedures regarding handling of personal information.
Student Files
Student files are stored in secured filing cabinets. Access is restricted to only those employees
(teachers, teacher-aides, counselors, secretaries, etc.) who, by nature of their work, are required to see
them.
Electronic Security
The school manages electronic files appropriately with passwords and security measures that limit
access by unauthorized personnel. The school’s security practices are reviewed periodically to ensure
that the privacy of personal information is not compromised.
Principle 8 – Openness
Lions Gate Christian Academy will make information available to individuals concerning the policies
and practices that apply to the management of personal information. Individuals may direct any
questions or enquiries with respect to the school’s privacy policies or practices to the Privacy Officer of
Lions Gate Christian Academy.

able to supply the information required. Most of this information is available in the registration forms
and other forms that you filled out.

during normal school hours. In situations of family breakdown, the school will grant access to records
of students in accordance with the law.
Principle 10 – Complaint Process
Individuals may question compliance with the above principles.
Questions, Concerns and Complaints
Questions, concerns, and complaints about privacy, confidentiality and personal information handling
policies and practices of the school should be directed to the school’s Privacy Officer by calling the
school office. If necessary, individuals will be referred to use the school’s complaint procedure and
