DESCRIPTION

GCSE Geography, introduction to Natural Hazards

Transcript

Unit 3 Natural Hazards

3.1 OverviewBy the end of this unit I will:•Be able to define a natural hazard•Know that different types of natural hazard have specific global distributions•Know that the movement of tectonic plates cause earthquakes and volcanoes•Know that climatic conditions lead to tropical storms and severe drought

This bit will be covered as we learn about each

of the specific types of hazard.

Today

Copy this diagram into your books, with the labels.

Structure of the Earth

Watch the video and add as many labels as you can to your picture – NOTE – the video shows the mantle as two separate layers.

What drives tectonic movement?

The surface of the earth is broken up into tectonic plates that move, causing earthquakes, volcanoes and building mountains.

Put the boundaries onto your maps

Movie (Tectonics – Ring of Fire)

There are three types of plate boundaries. A boundary is where two plates meet.

DESTRUCTIVE

CONSTRUCTIVE

CONSERVATIVE

As I show you the following clips, I would like you to work out which natural hazard each type of plate movement can cause. Write a table in your book like below

Type of plate boundary Type of hazard caused

TASK

Constructive

As plates slide alongside

each other they occasionally stick and

pressure builds up until there is an earthquake.

DestructiveAs plates move towards

each other one slides under the other causing

volcanoes.

ConservativePlates move away from each other and new crust is formed.

Cut out and sort the cards into groups that belong together.

You have until the timer finishes to get all of the cards cut out and sorted!

WHAT HAPPENED HERE?

CB

ADecide if the devastation has been caused by a volcano or an earthquake, and which type of plate boundary might be responsible.

Tell me two facts you have learnt from the lesson
