Plate names

Plate Boundaries.

First task- To find out what happens at the 4 different plate

boundaries.

Constructive plate boundary

Destructive plate boundary

Collision plate boundary

Conservative plate boundary

Task

• Label the key features at the four plate boundaries.

• Then cut them out and stick them into your books.

• Underneath each I want a sentence to explain what is happening– Which way are the plates moving.– What happens as a result.

Homework.

• To find out the date and location of a recent earthquake and volcano and the impact these had on human activity.

Plate definitions

Volcanic bombs, ash, lava, gases

Magma chamber

Parasitic cone

Crater

Main vent

Label this cross section of a volcano

Active volcano – liable to erupt.

Dormant (sleeping) volcano – a volcano which has not erupted for

many years

Extinct volcano – a volcano which has not erupted for many

thousands or millions of years

Types of Volcano

Composite Volcano Shield Volcano

Shield Volcano

• Occur at Constructive Plate Boundaries.

• Runny Lava that flows along way from the main vent.

• Gives the volcano gentle sides.

• Shield volcanoes almost never erupt violently due to the lava running free (no rocks).

Composite Volcanoes.

• Occur st destructive plate boundaries.

• Viscous (thick lava)

• The lava cannot flow far from the vent.

• Makes the volcano steep sided.

• Violent eruptions due to rapidly hardeneing rock which blocks vents and allows the pressure to build.

Dominoes.

• Lets test your knowledge so far.
