fOReWORD
When I wrote the first foreword for
LEONARD back in October 2011 I promised
myself that LEONARD would not go the way of
other auction house publications that almost
always are given up on after a few issues.
Im proud to say that LEONARD has not and
will not go that way and its largely thanks to
the open, collaborative and inclusive way the
Leonard Joel team operates. LEONARD, now
celebrating its second birthday, enjoys a life
of its own with all our specialists and staff
contributing in between every publication
deadline and giving it a personality and
depth of information unrivalled amongst
local auction houses. It would also be remiss
of me to now not admit that for many, many
months now our designer Maria Rossi has
been shouldering the lions share of the
editorial work and has ensured that every
issue is presented beautifully so thank you
Maria!
Two years ago I committed to the project
of ensuring that Leonard Joel remained
relevant in a very different collecting world,
would be inclusive of younger and emerging
collectors and would make the buying and
selling process less complicated and more
friendly and I hope we are delivering on these
promises. With our new concept space in
Collingwood, where we are now conducting
innovative auctions with a modern
sensibility, we hope to learn and respond to
customers with new tastes and new needs
and give them an auction experience that
reflects a changing collecting and decorating
environment. And when it comes to assisting
the buying process I am particularly proud
of our lowest bid price guarantee for
decades nervous absentee bidders have
worried about leaving bids with an auction
house; never really sure how the bid would
be handled. Simple we introduced an
explicit guarantee that imbues every sale
we undertake and ensures that every bid left
with us is executed as cheaply as possible,
every time. One simple change that has made
a world of difference to buyers that cant be
with us at the auction. Finally, it would be
remiss of me not to mention our very new
mobile-enabled website that now brings the
best of Leonard Joel in an easy to read and
use format on mobile phones. Like all digital
technology it will continue to evolve but we
at Leonard Joel believe in e-commerce and
our mobile site is just another example of our
commitment to bring Leonard Joel auctions
in to the 21st digital century and its new
generation of collectors with us.
So thank you to those of you that read
LEONARD and support Leonard Joel.
Whether you are a buyer, a seller or a
spectator at our auction rooms (or on our
digital platforms) you are all contributing to
make Leonard Joel what we believe to be the
most special auction house in Australia.

Not too many countries can boast a cultured
pearl industry the size of Australias. In fact
Australia was one of the first countrys to
experiment with the culturing of pearls which
was then perfected and marketed by the famous
Kokich Mikimoto.who was simultaneously
working on the same idea. No other pearl
compares in terms of size and rich luster as our
home grown product. Commonly known as
Broome or South Sea pearls, they are cultured
in the Pinctada Maxima oyster which thrives in
the warm waters of Northern Australia Know
for its iridescent silver and gold shell, this
oyster produces a pearl like no other. Whist the
Japanese cultured pearl market has struggled
in recent years and the Chinese fresh water
pearl market has dominated the scene with
over supply, Australian stand proud. Uniquely
Australian these pearls are in demand all over
the world. Discerning buyers paid high prices
for quality South sea pearl jewellery in the
recent Leonard Joel Fine Jewellery Auction.

At the Leonard Joel Fine Art auction on
Monday evening buyer confidence and
interest was pronounced across all collecting
periods and the room was left in no doubt
that bidders knew what to pay, confident
that art pricing had now settled. A full room,
spirited bidding and a high proportion of
$10,000 plus sales confirmed this renewed
art price stability.
FroM TrADITIoNAL To
CoNTeMPorAry
From traditional through to contemporary
fresh to the market lots were the focus
of the evening. Norman Lindsays The
Warriors, lot 52, provided a strong start for
the traditional painters and this rather large
scale and figuratively restrained work by
Lindsay standards realised $36,600 (IBP).
And as if to confirm that there will always be
a connoisseur for a rare work in any market,
lot 59, Blamire Youngs large scale work just
seven lots later realised $26,840 (IBP) against
a low estimate of $16,000. The result was one
of the highest prices ever paid for a Blamire
at auction and signalled a renewed interest
in the artists work after the publication of
the definitive book on the artist by Stephen
Marshall.
The sale of lot 192, also by Young, with a very
theatrical Egyptian narrative confirmed this
enthusiasm when it sold for more than six
times its estimate for $7930 (IBP). Equally,
the moderns maintained their popularity
with the cover lot by Ray Crooke, lot 62,
selling well above its low estimate to sell for
$25,620 (IBP). Fine contemporary was also
in demand with Bill Hensons untitled and
typically haunting interior work, lot 230,
doubling its low estimate and selling for
$10,370 (PBP).
SUrPrISe LoTS
Lot 120 by Emanuel Phillips Fox was in every
sense the sleeper lot. This portrait of a
sleeping infant rendered in Foxs signature
sublime greens and pinks was in need
of significant restoration with paint loss
throughout the work. Despite its project
nature the painting realised ten times its
estimate and sold for $13,420 (IBP). And
Horace Trennerys fetching Still Life, lot
6, offered another image verso of the artist
painting in his studio. Like its double feature,
the painting doubled its upper estimate
selling for $19,520 (IBP).

ANTIqUe & INTerIorS AUCTIoN
Not an auction goes by without an interesting
international work presenting itself for
research and marketing. A 17th century panel
in fine condition by Mathys Schoevaerdts, lot
156, enjoyed telephone bidders from around
the world and finally sold for $24,400 (IBP)
against a low estimate of $8,000.
JUST CUrIoUS
Refreshingly, it is not always price and fame
that drives collector interest at an art auction.
Sometimes its just that mix of obscure artist,
period and subject matter that generates lots
of discussion and debate. Lot 164, a moody
1930s work by the Belgian artist Andr
Tahon, of a robed model in a studio setting
was just such a lot. The question repeating
itself during the viewing was is the sitter a
man or a woman? No one could really decide
but it was ambiguous enough to set collectors
tongues wagging and finally sold for more
than four times its estimate for $3,538 (IBP).
FAMILy PorTrAITS
Toward the end of the auction two early
period works by Rick Amor, from his period
heavily influenced by Brack, sold well above
expectations. Lots 220 and 221, a self portrait
and a portrait of Amors father realised
$15,616 (IBP) against a combined low
estimate of $3,500.
The pair of rare, early Queensland Transitional boomerangs that emerged
after 100 years in the UK were one of the most exciting objects I have ever
handled. The Galbraith circa 1901-04 and Q^G circa 1901-10 boomerangs
arrived without any context or known history, and information on transitional
art is scarce. In the past, such cross cultural objects were considered at
best curiosities, and at worst (fine) decorative tourist ware. However they
are gradually being recognised as significant social, historical and cultural
documents. With research, I was able to date and identify much of the special
history that belonged to both boomerangs. These beautifully carved pieces
generated great interest in our March 2012 auction and after a hard won
contest they were acquired by the Museum of Victoria. They now belong to
all of us.

1This pair of vases represents porcelain manufacture at its highest point of development. Probably commissioned as exhibition pieces, they showcase all the elements of manufacture, from the moulding of the body through to the cast ormolu mounts and hand painted decoration.
2When David Bromley introduced me to his wonderland in Daylesford, Victoria known as A Day on Earth I was quite simply left breathless on my first visit. David taught me first hand that creative success is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration. This image of David in construction mode typifies for me that special auction of what David created in Daylesford and his extraordinary creative energy.
4The picturesque landscape by Australias pre-eminent nineteenth century landscape painter, John Glover, was one of three works by the artist offered in the March 2012 Fine Art Auction. These works exemplified the Romantic tradition in which the artists is so celebrated, with their wide sweeping vistas with towering mountains, soaring trees and small figures, dwarfed by their surroundings. Sold in March 2012 for $48,800 IBP
5When Andy Mac, the creative force behind Melbournes City Lights Projects emailed me I had no idea who he was but my assistant at the time Monique did! I met him in his space in central Melbourne on a very rainy Melbourne day. When I left I knew a little bit about Street Art and I had met a gentleman and an educator, Andy Mac. What evolved, thanks to Andy, was the countrys first significant Street Art auction at Leonard Joel.
6This playful Balloon Dog plate by American contemporary artist Jeff Koons, represents his ability to turn banal objects into high art icons. Sold in June 2012 for $10,370 IBP
16The single owner collection of Chinese snuff bottles offered in May 2013 was a significant benchmark in Leonard Joels commitment to growth in the area of Asian works of art. Comprising 57 lots, the collection realised $75,600 against an upper estimate of $24,000 and achieved an impressive 88% clearance rate by volume.
15Mirka Mora is one of Melbournes best known and loved artists who is renowned for her bold and bright paintings and whimsical soft sculpture dolls. Sold in March 2013 for $3,416 IBP
14This Ginori tin glazed earthenware vase was one of the highlights from a boutique estate auction in Armadale, Melbourne. The sale achieved an impressive 92% clearance rate and realised $185,400 (IBP).
13The marble bust God Unknown by the Lithuanian-American sculptor, Boris Lovet-Lorski, stands as an example of a work of international importance, marketed in Australia and sold for a price in line with international auction precedents for the artists work. It also shows the depth of quality to be found in Australian collections.
12The Davis Family Phar Family Photograph Album - A highly important, unique record of one of Australias favourite sporting champions. Consigned by the family of Phar Lap owner David Davis, the album is the ONLY known complete set of photographs of Phar Laps Australian race wins. Sold for $91,500 IBP

19Modern + Traditional Sale Curated by David Bromley - Leonard Joel made history by conducting its first auction in Collingwood. The sale comprised a wonderfully eclectic mix of 400 lots of furniture, art and objects personally selected by David Bromley.
7Diamond Riviere Necklace:Selected because it was one of the best examples of a diamond riviere that we have handled at Leonard Joel. The necklace boasted eighty seven fine white brilliant cut diamonds totaling 18.88cts. It was beautifully graduated and handcrafted by the prestigious Melbourne Jeweller Kozminsky. The necklace sold at auction for $42,700.00 IBP.
17This Thomas Webb cameo glass vase typifies the focus on quality in the traditional market which is the hallmark of the Classic Furniture, Objects and Collectables auction. Fully marked and in outstanding condition, the vase realised $9,000 (IBP).
8Louis Vuitton Luggage:This set was included because when it was originally consigned in April 2011 it set the benchmark for high end Pre-Owned Luxury items at Leonard Joel. All of the cases were in pristine condition and used as interior decorator pieces by their previous owner. The cases exceeded expectation at auction and when we use these images for promotional purposes we still get enquiries from clients wanting to buy them.
18This iconic image of Helen Homewood on the steps of Parliament House, illustrates Bruno Beninis ability to take to the streets of Melbourne to document the evolution of fashion with a sense of coutured elegance. Sold in June 2013 for $610
9This fantastic photograph taken in the courtyard of the National Gallery of Victoria, records the height of the 1970s pop fashion with its geometric shift dresses and platform shoes. The image formed part of a collection of works by the talented Italian-born, Melbourne-based photographer Bruno Benini offered in our Photographic Auction. Sold in July 2012 for $1,037 IBP
10The Graham Geddes Collection auction, featuring the 17th century tapestry pictured here, was a watershed single owner auction for Leonard Joel. Sold over three sessions in September 2012, the collection realised in excess of $2mil (IBP) and was the largest Australian decorative arts and antiques auction in 2012.
20The striking collection of 24 screenprints by street art giant Shephard Fairey (OBEY), recently offered in our Specialist Print Auction, highlights the growing popularity of this emerging category on the secondary market. Sold in August 2013 for $3, 416 IBP
11This Hans Wegner GE236/4 sofa was offered in the Modern Design sale on 7 October 2012. These popular specialised auctions are held twice each year at our newly opened Collingwood saleroom and comprise post-war interior furnishings and artwork by celebrated Australian, European and American designers and artists.
21For me the September issue front cover celebrated Leonard Joels foray in to the Sydney auction scene and Leonard Joels passion for photography and expanding our category range. Four years ago my team and I could not have imagined how progressive and responsive our auction calendar would become.

ladys Art Deco diamond wristwatch with
cover typified the night. Put simply buyers
were out in force for period pieces and
branded jewellery. The watch in question,
lot 67, realised $5,124 (IBP) against a low
estimate of $2,000. The theme of quality
in demand continued with the appetite for
signature pieces when lot 121, a diamond ring
by Van Cleef & Arpels, realised $8,540 (IBP).
The ring was intricately pierced with an
open construction that gave the impression
of floating diamonds in a dome formation.
The focus on workmanship extended
to utilitarian items also when lot 116, an
expertly crafted 9 carat gold cigarette case
by Asprey of London with concealed hinges

case was precisely decorated with all over

auction with lot 277, a rare Red Carpet
Collection necklace by Chopard, released as
part of its 2010 Cannes Film Festival range,
selling for $14,640 (IBP). The interlocking
open heart shape design was intermittently
set with Chopards trademark floating
diamonds design.

For the best part of two decades the jewellery
world has been suffering from a pearl-
glut, for want of a more elegant expression.
Regular auction-goers will be aware that
auctions tend to be semi-swamped with
pearl jewellery with supply overwhelming
demand. Well not any more if our Fine
Jewellery auction is anything to go by. Pearl
earrings, designer pearl earrings and south
sea pearls were selling with a regularity that
shocked and pleased our auction specialists.
One of the highlights was lot 22, a south sea
pearl necklace that realised $7930 (IBP).

My favourite pairs; what an easy topic for someone who is surrounded by
Jewels. It didnt take me long to think about it either. We here privileged
to consign a stunning pair of diamond earrings from the Cartier Secrets de
Boudior range. A contemporary interpretation of the garland style so closely
linked to Cartiers heritage from the early 1900s. These were much loved by
the vendor who reluctantly passed them on for another generation to enjoy.
Purchased in our March Fine Jewellery Auction for a reasonable $6,000.00
IBP. These stunning earrings typified the eclectic items that can be found at a
Leonard Joel jewellery auction all the way downunder in Australia.

The iconic Elda chair was designed by famed Italian designer Joe Colombo in
1963 for Italian manufacturer Comfort. The chair was named after Colombos
wife Elda and has a moulded fibreglass body which was considered highly
innovative for its time with plastics rarely previously used in furniture design.
These chairs are particularly memorable for me as they were offered in Leon-
ard Joels inaugural sale at Smith St, Collingwood in July 2013.

At one time or another, anyone who was
anybody in Melbourne society will have
graced the halls of the stately home,
Norrac, 23 View Street, Hawthorn. Home
to John Anderson Brown and Roman de
Kimpe for over half a century, the palatial
Italianate residence was the focal point for
a generation of fashionable Melbourne, its
sumptuous interiors recalling a bygone era
of the English country manor, in spite of its
location in the heart of one of Melbournes
most exclusive suburbs.
Built in 1881 for the Melbourne timber
merchant, James Wright, the property was
purchased in 1964 by John, a real estate agent
in Richmond and Roman, proprietor of the
South Yarra salon, Noisette and a distributor
for the French perfumery Guerlain, who
proved to be diligent custodians. After
restoring the property to a single home,
following its division into four residences in
the early 20th century, they then took to the
job of restoring the interior of the property
to its former grandeur, a task pursued with
great gusto during a series of overseas
buying trips, which formed the basis of the
collection.
Although a number of items from the
collection were sold in later years to fund
various maintenance requirements for the
property, the contents of Norrac as it exists
today is largely intact. Among John and
Romans most notable early purchases were
the James I oak fire surround, to be sold with
the property, which dominates the expansive
formal dining room and is juxtaposed with
an equally imposing 17th century Aubusson
tapestry, covering over four metres of the
main wall of the room. From here, each of
the rooms in turn features an array of early
Continental and English furnishings, fine
art and objects, complemented by Chinese
and European porcelain and a charming
collection of Indian reverse glass painted
portraits.
Following Romans passing and Johns
decline in health in recent years, the
Anderson family has appointed Leonard
Joel to manage the dispersal of the John
Anderson Brown Collection as a single
owner feature in the Classic Furniture,
Objects and Collectables Auction, from
12pm on Sunday 27th October, at Leonard
Joels primary salerooms, 333 Malvern Road,
South Yarra. The collection will be viewed
on-site at 23 View Street, Hawthorn, from
Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th October,
10am to 4pm.

This pair of vases resonates with me personally as they remind of the

The centrepiece of a collection handed down through generations of the one
family, these vases now form part of another significant Melbourne private
collection.

aBorIgInal ArT & arTefacTSOn the 10th of October, collectors will be
offered a diverse selection of Aboriginal art
and artefacts featuring some unique pockets
of cultural history. A rare opportunity has
surfaced with the offering of two early,
delicately incised pearl shells hosting
depictions of marine life from the Kimberley
region circa 1920. Kimberley material
culture is well represented in the sale, with
clubs and boomerangs circa 1915, to unique
and quirky carved sandstone heads from the
1980s.
From Yirrkala are some very fine 1950s woven
fibre baskets, a smoking pipe, and carved
Spirit figures. Also from the same period are
a group of Groote Eylandt barks that have
reappeared after 50 years in an American
collection. These are complemented by two
singular Flinders Island shell necklaces circa
1920.
An engaging painting by Lin Onus, depicting
two crosshatched frogs, provides a major
highlight of the auction. This piece has a
particular significance, as it was gifted to
the owners by the artist in 1993 during the
Australia Day Awards Party, at which Onus
was host.
Other features of the sale include a large
and vibrant work by Tommy Watson and
a classic Gertie Huddlestone painting, as
well as a watercolour by Albert Namatjira,
with the beautifully rendered ghost gums
that are a trademark of the artist. Djambo
Barra Barra is represented by three bright
and charismatic works and Jack Dale by a
striking, large scale painting titled Wandjinas
and Jalala.
One of Minne Pwerles earliest artworks,
Bush Melon Seeds, will be offered for
the first time. Created in 1999 under the
auspices of Dacou Gallery, it shows a raw
quality indicative of Minnies initial foray
into painting, just a year before she came to
the full attention of the art world.
Emily Kame Kngwarreye joins her cousin
Minnie Pwerle with two Wildflower
paintings from 1996. Additionally, another
highly regarded Utopian artist, Kathleen
Petyarre is also represented with a fine work
from Delmore Gallery.
The auction also features the collection from
the estate of the late Jim Mann, a Victorian
farmer who first travelled to remote
communities in Australia in the 1970s when
he joined the NAISDA (National Aboriginal/
Islander Skills Development Association).
The highlights of this collection range from
some very fine barks by Yalmakany Marawili,
through to the work of rising star Jorna
Newbury.

Leonard Joels Managing Director, John Albrecht, refers to Leonard Joel as
the home of the economy of beautiful things. As one of Leonard Joels twelve
specialists, its a pleasure to peruse the records of all the beautiful art and objects
which Leonard Joel has sold over the years and locate items which are destined for
future auctions.
One of the joys of being a specialist is getting to know the owners of the items
which we consign and the stories behind their possessions, so that we can facilitate
the process by which objects of beauty pass from one owner to the next.
Through a combination of research, professional experience and a great deal of
considered thought, Leonard Joel specialists identify, catalogue and estimate items
featured in its auctions. Although estimates refl ect recent sales of comparable
examples, prices realised refl ect the extent to which an object or art work ignites
the imagination of the buying public. Here I have selected fi ve items sold by
Leonard Joel which have done just that.
Leonard Joel excels in fi nding new homes for the rare, the beautiful and the
unusual. If you own such an item and are curious as to its value, feel free to contact
me for an obligation-free appraisal on 0403 142 106 or anne.phillips@leonardjoel.
