What’s Bentonite
– Bentonite is a clay mineral of the smectite group.
– The nature of volcanic origins of bentonite deposits give rise to varieties of the mineral that are very often extremely heterogeneous.

What’s Bentonite
The elementary particle is a platelet:
every single platelet is about 1 nm thin
the various platelets are held together in packets by electrostatic
and Van der Waals forces
they can be exfoliated and dispersed in submicronic particles

Its structure, chemical composition and small crystals
dimension impart particular properties to become an
essential raw material for many industrial applications.

LAVIOKOLL ® incorporation
To increase the properties of LAVIOKOLL® C-series it’s better to prepare a pre-gel in water at 7-8% under high shear and add the pre-gel to the system as required. For a better utilization of the product it’s recommended to wait some hours as to let the viscosity built up
Incorporation of LAVIOKOLL ®
LAVIOKOLL ® can be added dry to the formulation and they will develop their gelling ability under high shear dispersion.
10
LAVIOKOLL ® benefits
· less increase of shear strenght
· high increase of plasticity
· promotes anti-sag
· reduction of cost of formulation
LAVIOKOLL ® can be used in partial substitutionof cellulose ethers,
giving some further benefits like:
11
LAVIOKOLL ® improve the sag resistance thanks to yield point, the clay platelets reduce stickiness on the tools and reduce the viscosity during application which significantly improves the tooling properties
- sag resistance
- better workability
LAVIOKOLL ® benefits
TILE ADHESIVES are cement or polymer dispersion based system
cellulose ethers: right consistency for the application, sag resistance of wall tiles, water retention for the optimum hardening of cement and the control of open/correction times
Feature required
12
LAVIOKOLL ® improve• sag resistance of the renderings by providing a fast recovery of the viscosity after application. • the pumping, workability and tooling are easier due to the slip effect of the platelets reducing the friction between sand and cement particles. • the stickiness on the steel float (darby) and trowel is reduced which leads to smoother surfaces.
- Improved workability and tooling
- Improved sag resistance
- Homogeneous surface
LAVIOKOLL ® benefits
RENDERINGS- STUCCO- PLASTERS can be hydraulic hardening cement, gypsum or liquid polymer dispersions.
Features required
13
LAVIOKOLL ® benefits
LAVIOKOLL ® improves sag resistance and workability without negatively affecting adhesion strength.
- Improved handling- Improved sag resistance- Improved pumpability
EXTERIOR INSULATION AND FINISHING SYSTEMS (EIFS) on cement, powder or liquid polymerdispersions.
Features required
They consist of expanded poly-styrene boards, which are adhered to the substrate, reinforced and coated with a finishing plaster
14
LAVIOKOLL ® benefits
LAVIOKOLL ® are used as a stabiliserin gypsum flooring to preventsettling of coarse particles and reduce bleeding of water on the surface, leading to smoother finishes.
- Anti-settling
- Anti-bleeding
GYPSUM FLOORING
Features required
Flooring systems, based on cement, are more difficult to stabilise with clays due to the high pH and the resulting reduced thickening effect

Bentonite has some advantages and disadvantages vers us cellulose ether
•Promotes anti-sag
•Improves workability
•Improves finishability
•Low cost-in-use
•Prevents bleed
•Provides lubricating effect for machine applied sys tems – reduces pressure and wear
•Does not give water retention
•Will swell and shrink on wet/dry cycling
•Can be used to increase water demand
Cellulose Ether:
•Provides water retention
•Improves open time
•Prevents settling and bleed
•Improves adhesion under dry conditions – wet conditions show no improvement
•Will not provide anti-sag properties unless very high viscosity grades are used, or modified (high viscosity grades
do not give best workability)
