A Mixed Fraction is

a whole number and a proper fraction

Mixed Fractions

A Mixed Fraction is

a whole number and a proper fraction combined.

For example,

1⅞ , 2¼, 14½

• Did you notice that the example is made up of a whole number and a proper fraction together?

• Therefore, it is called a "mixed" fraction (or mixed number).

Three Types of Fractions

There are three types of fraction:

Mixed Fractions or Improper Fractions

You can use either an improper fraction or a mixed fraction to show the same amount.

1⅞ = 15

You can use either an improper fraction or a mixed fraction to show the same amount.

1⅞ = 15

8 1 whole = 8 parts

Multiply the whole number by the denominator:

1 × 8 = 8

Add the numerator to that:

8 + 7 = 15

Then write that down above the denominator,

like this:

1⅞ = 15

15 ÷ 8 = 1 with remainder of 7

Place the remainder above the denominator
