Water in its cycle, passing through the
layers of the ground, gets rich of
several mineral salts, but also of
chemical substances often present in
amounts higher than the
concentrations admitted by the law,
thus making both potable and
technological use prohibitive as well as
harmful.
For this reason GEL has created aseries of column filters able to solve
the different problems water has in
these cases. GEL column filters are
manufactured in fibreglass for the
models 30 - 500 l. and steel for bigger
models.
IRON REMOVERS:
remove the excess of iron, manganese
and hydrogen sulphide. Technical and
potable use.
CLARIFIERS:

turbidity due to clay, silt, colloidal
substances, sand. Technical and
potable use.
CHLORINE REMOVERS:
remove the excess of chlorine as well
as bad smells, colours and tastes
present in water with adsorbent action.

3... OUR ELECTRONICTIMERS
The different models of column filters
can be equipped with one of the two
timers available.
The models Deferr, Desabb, Declor
and Neutral are fitted with the timer
ET 500 F (time only), carrying out
backwashing each n programmed
days.
The Denitrat models are equipped
with the timer VT 1000 AD(volume/time) carrying out
regeneration each "n" programmed
days or before, if the volume of
treated water has already saturated
the resins, and the timer is fitted with
the resins self-disinfection system.

IRON
REMOVERS
3 DEFERR
The presence of iron gives a yellow-redcolour and a bad metallic taste towater, causes deposits and corrosionand as a consequence the pipesgradually clog. The iron contained in the water fordomestic use stains taps and linengiving origin to aesthetic and hygieneproblems.Potable water must not contain morethan 0,2 mg/l of iron and 0,05 mg/l ofmanganese. For many industrial and technologicaluses, and for some countries rules are
even more restrictive.GEL offers a series of column filterscalled Deferr, removing high quantitiesof manganese and iron from water. Thisremoval is firstly carried out by addinghypochlorite to water. It is thereforenecessary to install a metering pump tooxidize the iron and manganese. Before passing through the Deferr filter, the water has to remain in a tank forthe time necessary to complete theoxidizing process. From here, through a surge tank, waterpasses to the Deferr filter and theoxidized iron and manganese are
turned into flocks that are retained bythe iron remover filtering masses. To periodically remove these flocks, theiron remover automatically carries out abackwashing. The frequency of thebackwashing is determined by thepressure losses caused by the flocksdepositing. It is absolutely necessary to install afilter before the DEFERR and one afterit, to be sure that no flocks reach thewater system. The iron remover is to be chosenaccording to the required flow rate andthe iron concentration present in water(see table F).

CLARIFIERS
3 DESABB
The water used for drinking, washing ortechnological use, whether flowingfrom water mains or private supplies, generally contains impurities such assand, clay, silt and so on.In order to protect the water supplysystem (valves, pressure switches, taps, boilers and so on), it is necessary tocarry out a filtering at the entry of thewater system to remove suchimpurities. If water only contains lowconcentrations of sand or solidparticles, standard cartridge filters are
used. If the turbidity is due to clay, siltand/or colloidal substances, filtering isto be carried out by using quartz sandmulti-layered filters of different grainsizes which are able to retain highamounts of such impurities. The DESABB clarifying filters are madeup of a column containing a permanentmulti-layered filtering bed.To periodically remove the retainedimpurities, the sand filter automaticallycarries out a backwashing. The clarifier is to be chosen accordingto the required flow rate (see table G).

CHLORINEREMOVERS
3 DECLOR
Water can contain excess of chlorineused for disinfecting, cause of badsmells, colours, unpleasant tastes andpossible formation of compoundsdangerous for the human health. For this reason it is suggested to installa chlorine removing filter with activatedcarbons. DECLOR chlorine removersare made up of a column containingspecial activated carbons masses ofvegetable origin with adsorbent effect. The chlorine remover periodicallycarries out a backwashingautomatically.
The chlorine remover is to be chosenaccording to the required flow rate (seetable H).

NITRATEREMOVERS
3 DENITRAT
The presence of nitrates in water iscaused by the decomposition ofnitrogenous substances that can befound in human and animal waste andmainly by the indiscriminate use of(nitrogen-based) fertilizers inagriculture. These fertilizers are beingmore and more used and highconcentrations can be foundparticularly in water beds and in allagricultural areas strongly overworked.Children until six-seven years old andelderly people are more subject to therisk, directly affecting the blood
composition, thus reducinghaemoglobin and giving origin tocarcinogenic processes. As for town waterworks, a biologicaltreatment, very complex and difficult tomanage, is used to reduce the nitratesconcentration within the limit allowedfor potable water. For domestic use, it is recommendedto reduce the excess of nitrates byinstalling a nitrate remover with anionicresins regenerable by sodium chloride(kitchen salt). The resins contained in the nitrateremovers retain the nitrates present in
water exchanging them with thechlorides of the regenerating solution(sodium chloride). The regeneration can be programmedwith automatic volume/time procedure(Timer VT 1000 AD) to guarantee themaximum safety for a water deliveredwithout nitrates. The nitrate remover is to be chosenaccording to the daily waterconsumption and to the concentrationof nitrates (see table I).

NEUTRALIZERS
3 NEUTRAL
Water, particularly in somemountainous areas, may have very lowpH values, low hardness values andhigh excess of carbon dioxide. Thissituation causes corrosion phenomenaand oxides depositing, as aconsequence the perforation of pipes. The solution to the problem is installingneutralizing filters with calciumcarbonate.NEUTRAL neutralizing filters are madeup of a column containing activemasses of calcium carbonate capableto increase the pH value and the water
hardness, bringing it to a morebalanced value. The masses need to be periodicallywashed. This is automatically carriedout by the head of the column filtercontrolled by an electronic timer. Tocomplete the protection of thesystems, it is necessary to install afterthe neutralizer a metering pump fordosing an anti-corrosion product. The neutralizer is to be chosenaccording to the required flow rate (seetable L).
