Košice Region is located in the southeastern part of the Slovak Republic

It is one of the eight Slovak administrative regions

Its area represents 14% of the total area of Slovakia

General Information

Geography of the region

The region borders on the Prešov Region in the north and the Banská Bystrica Region in the west

It also shares two state borders – with Ukraine and Hungary

The largest mountain is the Slovak Ore Mountains

The largest river is the River of Bodrog

Population and towns

In the region live 780,000 inhibitantsThe region consists of 11 districts and

440 municipalities, 17 of which have the status of a town

The city of Košice is the region´s capital and the biggest city

Other big towns are Michalovce, Spišská Nová Ves and Trebišov

Is the biggest city of the region and the second biggest in the country

More then 55% of region´s population lives in Košice

It is the most important city of Eastern Slovakia

There are 2 national parks in the region - the Slovak Paradise and the Slovak Karst

The Slovak Karst is very popular for hiking

Caves6 of 12 Slovak caves are situated in the

region, e.g. Domica Cave, Dobšinská Ice Cave and Ochtinská Aragonite Cave

Dobšinská Ice Cave was the first cave in the world lit by electricity

The only low temperature water geyser in Europe we can find in beautiful park in the village of Herľany

Culture

In the region are many historic buildings, especially castles, chateaus, manor houses and historical town centers

The Spiš Castle (the largest Slovak castle)

In Košice the most imposant building is Gothic Cathedral – St Elisabeth´s Cathedral

The oldest marathon in Europe and the secont oldest in the world is run in Košice
