What could Ma-donna’s shoe, El-
ton John’s glasses, and a painting by George Clinton of Parliament/Funk-adelic fame possibly have in common?
They’re just some of the many rock ‘n’ roll relics gracing the walls of Key West’s Hard Rock Cafe, at 313 Du-val St., which is continually boosting its presence with innovative food and drink menus, and an ongoing com-mitment to community spirit.
“We like to say that we’re the South-ernmost museum of rock ‘n’ roll,” said Sales and Marketing Manager Ni-cole Noyes. “But we’re so much more than that. We serve a fantastic variety of mouthwatering food and creative cocktails in a high spirited atmosphere. We want to deliver an ‘experience’ to every guest, not just a meal.”
In 1971, the first Hard Rock Cafe opened in London, and just celebrated its 48th birthday on June 10. The com-pany has launched a brand new menu globally, and added over 20 new menu items to the core Hard Rock menu.
Hard Rock Cafe Key West is of course known for their world famous
Hurricane cocktail and it packs a Category 5 punch, but if you want to try something new, check out their exciting new list of Summer Inspired craft cocktails.
Speaking of new…get your hands on some of these new menu items next time you visit the cafe. The One Night in Bangkok Spicy Shrimp, is a tasty tribute to the 1984 Murray Head pop tune, featuring eight ounc-es of crispy shrimp tossed in a spicy and creamy sauce, topped with scal-lions and sesame seeds, and served on a bed of coleslaw.
The Southwest Spring Rolls are also a good bet. These crispy and delicious spring rolls with black beans, roasted corn, Monterey jack cheese, red pep-pers and jalapenos are served with a guacamole ranch dipping sauce.
Sliders are now offered three ways at the Hard Rock. The All-American, Buf-falo and Whiskey Bacon Jam Sliders are increasingly becoming a crowd favorite.
The Original Legendary Burger is known worldwide and is made with a 1/2-pound steak patty, garnished with applewood bacon, Tillamook cheddar cheese, a crispy onion ring, leaf lettuce, and vine-ripened toma-toes, and served with the Hard Rock’s signature steak sauce on the side.

“Boozy Milkshakes” such as the Strawberry Cheesecake Milkshake are refreshing, fun, and very popular with regular customers.
To feel like a true rock legend, bite into the new 24-Karat Gold Leaf Steak Burger, which pairs the 1/2-pound fresh steak patty, Tillamook cheddar, leaf lettuce, and tomato, with red onion, and a topping of 24-karat edi-ble gold leaf. That’s right, edible gold leaf!
Another new addition is the savory Steak Salad, composed of eight-ounces of grilled steak and fresh mixed greens tossed in a blue cheese vinaigrette, with pickled red onions, red peppers, and roma tomatoes, finished with crispy shoestring onions, and blue cheese crumbles.
The truly famished may enjoy going head-to-head with the Baby Back Ribs entree. This huge rack is seasoned with house-made barbe-cue sauce. It’s grilled to perfection, and served with fries, coleslaw,
and ranch-style beans.For dessert, try one of the new-
ish “Boozy Milkshakes,” such as the Strawberry Cheesecake Milk-shake, pairing Absolut Vanilla Vodka and ice cream, blended with the flavors of strawberry cheesecake, with white chocolate whipped cream, and frosted an-imal cookies. (A non-alcoholic version is also available).
Guests are encouraged to round up their checks to support the thoughtfully named “Hard Rock Heals Foundation.
“The core foundation of Hard Rock International has always been about giving-back, which is why you will most often find us gladly hosting a local charity fundraiser, luncheon or commu-nity event,” Noyes said. “If you haven’t been to an event here, we roll out the red carpet! Think of
us for your next holiday party, business meeting, family func-tion or community event.”
From nightly live music by local musicians on the outdoor patio, to their creative new menu items and craft cocktails. There is some-thing for everyone at Hard Rock Cafe Key West, where the motto is “Love all, Serve All.”
The Hard Rock Cafe is open from 8 a.m. to midnight daily, and until 2 a.m. on Saturdays. Breakfast is served from 8 a.m-12 noon, Happy Hour is from 5 to 7 p.m., and again from 10 p.m. to midnight every day of the week.

As regular readers of this column are aware, I was
born in a chilly, land-locked area where a fish dinner usually meant Capt. Highliner’s breaded Pollock sticks.
One year, during our family’s win-ter vacation, we headed south to es-cape a January cold snap and my Dad just kept driving until he ran out of road. We had accidentally discovered Key West, a magical town with in-credible seafood.
I’ll never forget our first meal here . . . Key West pink shrimp, conch chowder, and Florida lobster, over-looking the ocean. I was hooked.
To the envy of my childhood friends, our family relocated here permanently 24 years ago. The novelty of growing bananas, pineapples, and mangoes in my backyard was miraculous, but it was the chance to feast on the day’s fresh catch at a waterfront restaurant that really made living here a foodie’s paradise. Even today my family mem-bers and I consider this ritual to be one of life’s great pleasures.
I savored those treasured memories recently during a visit to the South-ernmost Beach Cafe, located on the Atlantic Ocean, at 1405 Duval St.
This time my visit was at the invita-tion of Executive Chef Matt Slattery, who has revamped the afternoon menu to include some of his latest creations. Specifically, the chef wanted my opin-ion on the Tuna Stuffed Avocado.
Declining a cocktail from the restaurant’s full liquor bar, I opted for sparkling water, so as not to confuse the flavors I was set to enjoy.
Tuna Poke is all the rage these
days and many local eateries have been hard at work creating their own versions of this simple sashimi-style treat. Key West is blessed to have sev-eral varieties of tuna swimming just offshore, so the quality and freshness here are top quality. It’s one of my fa-vorites, and I’m always on the look-out for new ways to enjoy it.
Slattery’s preparation is one of the best I’ve ever tasted. The delicate fresh fish is lovingly loaded into a but-tery smooth Hass avocado half, and topped with cream cheese and a sweet soy glaze. In keeping with the Asian theme, it’s then served on a mound of rice, with ribbons of peppery fresh ginger on the side.
There’s even a few puddles of Srira-cha Aioli on the plate for the benefit of those who enjoy a little heat. A sea-weed salad is the crowning touch to this inventive offering. I enjoyed this dish from the very fist bite, and I’ve since returned to sample it again. It’s billed as a small plate, but is satisfying enough to serve as a light lunch.
With numerous new seafood addi-tions to the menus, and that gorgeous ocean view, this “closest dining room to Cuba” is well worth a visit.
