A TECHNICAL REPORT ON 4 WEEKS INTERNSHIP IN

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL BIOLOGY (IICB)

INTRODUCTION

In 6th semester, 5 -Year Integrated MLIS Course has internship programme as a part of our course

for hands on training in reputed libraries/information centers. Therefore, we were divided into 3 groups and were sent to three important institutions of India. One of them is Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB).

10 students were sent to IICB and I was in this group.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL BIOLOGY CSIR -(IICB)

Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) is a biomedical research centre in Kolkata, established in 1935. The Library and documentation centre of this institution is perhaps, the biggest one on biomedical sciences in the eastern zone of India.

1ST DAY (6TH APRIL)

Our training started on 6th April. We arrived at sharp 10a.m and reported to the librarian N.C.Ghosh.

He taught us about the library rules and professional ethics, library management and time management.

He introduced us to the library personnel. He told us to observe the library acutely.

ACTIVITIES

The library Has an archival section for

printed documents. Has a well furnished

reading hall with a net section having 30 computers.

Is open from 9-30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. (from Monday to Friday).

PROBLEMS

Dust and insects in some areas.Improper shelving.

We formed two groups to do library works. First group consists of six members and second group consists of four members. Our group members were Akhil, Aishee,Sudeshna and me.

Sutapa madam guided us to repair the damaged spine labels on the cover of books and she provided us some useful materials to arrange the books in a proper way.

We completed more than 250 books and arranged them properly.

2ND DAY (7TH APRIL)

We had an interactive session on that morning with Sutapa madam.She divided us in 3 groups A, B and C. I was in team C and my group members were Sujata Biswas and Arpita Mondal.

3RD AND 4TH DAY (9,10/O4/15)

Our task was:Classification of books from IICB according Universal Decimal Classification, Standard edition;Cataloguing of the books and theses in MARC21 format, Libsys4 software;Data entry of 18 books in Libsys4;Circulation process (issue and return of books by barcode);Barcode generation;Membership card generation;

5TH DAY (10TH APRIL)

59th foundation day of IICB. The institute organized a programme and we

were allowed to attend it. We became aware of the glorious history of the institution till date. I was proud that as a trainee, I listened to the lectures of the works of the renowned personalities who were present on the day.

13TH APRIL

We were divided into two groups . Dinesh da taught us(boys) about Koha which is a library management software. And Sinjini di taught to girls.We learnt how to enter a book in koha.That day we entered 16 books in koha.

16TH AND 17TH APRIL, 20TH -24TH APRIL

Our task was-1. Arranging the bound volume of journals in

alphabetical order.2. Finding the new, misplaced and

damaged journals.3. Updating their master cards.

We arranged 40 bound volume of journals in this week

27TH APRIL AND 28TH APRIL

Our last task was -1. Arranging the books in the shelves

according to call number.2. Dusting and cleaning them.3. Replacing, pasting and labeling their

damaged spine labels.

We arranged books and replaced the spine labels, those required. Swapan sir helped us very much in this work.

CONCLUSION

During this 4 week, I got the exposure to work in a research oriented library. I got an opportunity to enhance my practical as well as theoretical knowledge. This session gave me a valuable experience about a real life profession and its ethics.

I am highly thankful to the director of IICB Prof. Siddhartha Roy and Dr. Susanta Roychowdhury, the head of the library and documentation division who allowed us to work as an internee in the institution.

The most special thanks goes to the librarian N.C.Ghosh who taught us library management and the ethics.

I am also thankful to the library personnel who always provided us a friendly environment.
