DESCRIPTION

Monica Ursina Jäger and Justin Hibbs, both represented by Christinger De Mayo since its beginning, collaborate on a show that marks the Seasons Opening of the Zurich Gallery Scene. PARA/SITE examines the connections between urbanization, architecture and art and draws upon the rich heritage of unseen information encoded within architectural structures such as social, political or aesthetic agendas. With a sense of constantly shifting perceptions the work operates in the expanse between seeking to establish relationships between both real and idealized notions of space. Architectural space in this context acts as a catalyst and cipher for a range of other emotions relating to contemporary experience.

Justin HibbsPortfolio

Justin HibbsJustin Hibbs’ work is a renegotiation of the visual language and ideological legacies of modernism. It draws upon a rich heritage of information encoded within architectural structures such as social, political or aesthetic agendas. The work seeks to establish and question relationships between real and idealized notions of space. This is explored through a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Architectural Interventions.

Central to each of these disciplines is drawing. An on-going series of works utilises found images of architectural spaces as a starting point. The images become ‘host’ to a series of interven-tions in a reduced geometric language, consisting of lines, trajec-tories, and simplified forms. These interventions grow parasite like from the host image subverting spatial relationships and offering the potential for re-imagination. Slipping between abstraction and representation these works take their form through an interplay between what are often considered mutually exclusive forms of representation such as documentary photography and the lan-guage of modernist abstraction.

The ideas initiated in these drawings are taken further in a series of site-specific installation works and sculptures that engage directly with the architectural space itself. Vinyl tape is used as a drawing medium to translate ideas at life-scale directly onto walls or windows. These works attempt to confound normal spatial perspectives playfully questioning the construction and percep-tion of space in both two and three dimensions.
