Just Do The Right Thing

Cory Green, Senior DirectorDivision of NCLB Program Coordination, TEA

Reasons to do the right thing

… lessons learned from the past five years of SIP implementation

Reasonsto do the right thingCalling the TEA SIP staff and getting your answer, then emailing the same staff and asking the same question, then calling another SIP staff, and then another, and then the SIP Director, then the division director, then calling your ESC staff to call us and confirm our answer takes time away from assisting other campuses.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Failing to (or choosing not to) use the required TEA parent notification letter causes TEA to require you to send a second, or maybe a third, letter of notification to parents.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Forgetting to remove the instructions in the letter<insert campus name here>

or forgetting to change the campus name in the letter requires you to send multiple letters to parents.

Reasonsto do the right thing

You do not want to explain to the press why you cannot spend the school improvement funds provided to you or why you spent the money the way you did.

Reasonsto do the right thing

A strong focus on instruction and student learning has a greater impact on meeting AYP than purchasing large amounts of capital outlay items…furniture, iPods, tractors, garage for school van, barbecue grill, etc.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Playing card games during the SIP orientation meetings and SIP trainings does not improve student academic achievement or assist the campus in meeting AYP.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Blaming the campus’ SIP status on a group of students or on one particular student is never the right thing to do.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Notifying the parent of school choices that do not exist does not increase parent involvement.

Reasonsto do the right thing

You are required to use the TEA Parent Notification Letters as they are written. Spending hours trying to “unlock” the letters wastes time that could be spent improving the campus.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Parents, and their students, deserve to have all the choices available to them…for school choice options and for choosing supplemental service providers.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Supplemental Educational Services providers can file a complaint against the district and TEA will investigate the complaint.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Contracting issues with Supplemental Educational Services providers is not an acceptable excuse for denying services to students for months.

Reasonsto do the right thing

Your district documentation must be detailed because you never know what Supplemental Educational Services provider will be interviewed by USDE during the audit visit.

Reasonsto do the right thing

It is required.

You accepted the funding.

Reasonsto do the right thing
