This Week’s Sponsor Jenny & Wendy Williams in Loving Memory of Geoff Williams Thank you very much .
WALKS UP MT MONMOT Over the 3 days we experienced a huge variety of weather with every element at some stage sharing the days with us.
Firstly, I wish to sincerely thank the Mackinnon Family for giving us permission to
walk the beautiful mountain on their land.
I also sincerely thank Andrew Welsh for facilitating this permission and for his trust that all would go well. In today’s times it is a challenge to welcome the public onto your private land due to the possible litigation if things go wrong. Thank you from our Skipton and district community .
Approximately 20 people joined me to discover the true beauty of one of our local icons, learning about its geology and how incredibly unique Mt Monmot is with it being a rare double cone.
This is a very rare form of volcanic cone with very few existing in Australia.
It is important this cone is preserved as it is, never to have more scarring added to it in the future with thoughts of extending the quarry in the wind!!
The vistas from the volcanic plug and the main rim are stunning, especially as the canola crops paint the landscape golden, and before the turbines raise their ugly heads.
Thank you to all the local people who walked the Mount, enjoyed the exercise and tried to view it as in the eyes of Ludwig Von Gherrard.
I apologise that there is no way making it easier to climb to the top (an escalator was suggested!!).
Please keep taking photos, recording your local environment in painting, drawing, writing and creating so you are able to be part of the celebration of our landscape in 2019.
Historically this is a VERY important time which will be lost forever.
Remember, everyone is invited to be part of the ‘Landscape Celebration’ —don’t forget to encourage our children of ALL ages to participate (maybe the parents, grandparents, school and pre school could support us with that by encouraging their children).
Once again thank you to the Mackinnon Family and
Andrew Welsh, Manager of Langi Willi. (Pat Gabb).
Reminder --- are you interested ??? A reminder to our wonderful community,
look at your landscape and record it NOW .
Community Event “Celebrating our Landscape”. Photograph,

Before it changes dramatically.
Time is running out before the first turbines are
erected on the Stockyard Hill Wind Farm.
We will be commemorating our landscape with an
exhibition in 2019 in the Skipton Hall.
Photos, drawings, poems, painting, all are a
wonderful method of recording our landscape.

What a game we witnessed at the Grand Final
played at Eureka Stadium on Saturday!
A huge contingent of Skipton supporters were on hand to
see if our boys could finish off their year as we hoped.
After grinding out a couple of good but not that pretty
wins in previous finals we knew they had worked hard
enough, but of course there were nerves in the camp. We
were soon to be reassured!
The scene was set within 30 seconds of the first bounce
with a great piece of teamwork in the middle from
ruckman Ben Nash and league best and fairest Blake Scott

VALE BELINDA HORSLEY
The Board, Executive and Staff at Beaufort and Skipton Health
Service fondly remember Belinda Horsley who passed away last
week.
Belinda was a valuable member of the Nursing team at Skipton
where she started work as a nurse 28 years ago. Skipton Hospital
was 10 beds back in those days and Belinda saw and supported its
growth and success over her years with us. Belinda was a vital
part of setting up Brigadoon for our residents.
In 1996 when the Beaufort Ripon Peace Memorial Hospital and
the Skipton Hospital merged to become Beaufort and Skipton
Health Service Belinda continued to support the community in
her nursing role.
In 2002 the government committed to funding to rebuild the
Skipton Hospital and Belinda was the senior nursing
representative on the project group that planned and developed
the existing Skipton Campus.
In 2004 Belinda was appointed as the Director of nursing at the
Skipton Campus and she held that position until she retired in
2017.
Belinda lived in the Skipton Community and
with her husband Trevor raised their family.
This week the staff have shared with each
other many stories of their friendship and
work life with Belinda.
Beaufort and Skipton Health Service send
Belinda’s husband Trevor and her children
Christopher, Laura and Phillipa our deepest
sympathy and love.
Warm Regards,
Rathi Dawson (BSHS Board Chair)

BEREAVEMENT THANK YOU
Jenny and Wendy Williams would like to thank a number of people from the Skipton community for the support and help provided to them since the death of their father, Geoff Williams, and over the last few months.
Thanks to Dr Mohammad and Barb, for your care and attention to us all.
Many thanks to Peter Hinchcliffe for your tireless support. Thanks also go to David Barker, Brendyn Henricksen, Natasha and Nathan Frisby, Craig and Alison Plover, Yvonne Shady and Cath Kavanagh, and Dads neighbours.
Dad and his companion (the late) Margaret Brown, would have been thrilled with some of the contributions or donations made to the community on their behalf.
These include Skipton Community Hospital, Skipton Historical Society, Skipton Op Shop, Skipton Football Club, Guides Victoria, Red Cross, Ballarat Nurses League and Skipton CFA Auxiliary.
Skipton is a lovely town and community with a bright and positive
future. We have been through a huge and daunting experience
which has been made easier for us both with the support from the
Skipton community. Thank you.

Book Review.
The Lost Pilots: the spectacular rise and scandalous fall
of aviation’s golden couple, by Corey Mead. 2018.
The era of aviation adventure was long before most of us
have memories. In 1927 an Australian woman, Jessie
Miller, aged 25 and trying to escape a loveless and boring
marriage arrived in London, where she met charming and
ambitious Bill Lancaster, who saw out the First World War
as a pilot, joined the RAF, but who now had his head full of
a scheme to emulate Charles Lindbergh - he wanted to fly
to Australia. And Jessie managed to persuade him that if
he wanted her to help finance the adventure, she would
have to go with him. It worked – somehow the money was
found the plane chosen, an Avro Avian III biplane and the
first part of the book describes the hair raising and
successful flight to Australia in the “Red Rose”. And the
flying adventure continued, pictures of Jessie as a “Powder
Puff Derby” competitor in 1929 alongside Amelia Earhart,
show a tiny, determined young woman who more or less
taught herself to fly on the journey to Australia, one of the
leaders in her select field of strong, independent women
competing against and with the pioneer aviators of the
1930’s.
But it all ended in tears, the
Stock Market crash left Bill
and Jessie broke, the
introduction into their
partnership of a ghost writer
who was going to help write
t h e i n c o m e e a r n i n g
biography, the crime that followed and the tragic end to it
all – read it for yourself, the story of those few frantic years
is as well told as a fiction adventure, and Jessie and Bill
emerge as very real people
Ninety years later, to prove that adventure can still be
found… we can read about
Voyage of the Southern Sun, by Michel Smith. 2017.
Michael Smith determined that flying a one man amphibian
plane designed mainly for lake hopping hunters he could
retrace the route taken in the 1930’s by the big Qantas
flying boats that were then the ultimate way to travel to
Australia from Europe. On his own. With little long
distance flying experience he achieved the seemingly
impossible; he describes each leg of the journey and each
stop along the way with clarity and humour. His secondary
object in the journey was to visit as many movie houses as
he could in the various towns and cities he stopped in –
Michael is the owner of Melbourne’s art deco Sun Theatre
in Yarraville, and restoring old movie palaces is his other
passion.
Once in London, just because he could, he hopped over the
Atlantic for more adventures in America,
the only leg he couldn’t fly home was from Alaska out into
the North Pacific, but that was O.K., he had a family to get
home to…
A wonderful, understated tale of ambition and a huge
enjoyment of what he saw and experienced, and of course
with a strong sense of the history created by the pilots
whose route he was following. Great reading for all,
especially those with a feeling for flight! L.O.

Skipton Progress Association Inc.
Those at the September Meeting of the Association were joined by Cr. Lesley Brown and Gary Moorfield from Corangamite Council, and the meeting had plenty to hear and talk about.
Firstly, the closing dates for nominations for Corangamite Council Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year is on October 1st. We hope other organisations and groups will join with us in putting in nominations for some of the wonderful people in our Community.
Forms can be downloaded from the Council website, or ask us for hardcopy and we can get that for you. Recipients of certificates and award winners will be announced at the 2019 Australia Day Celebrations, which will be held in Terang, 26th January 2019.
Cr. Brown left the meeting with a list of complaints about our roads and roadsides which she will be taking to Council on our behalf.
We thank Lesley for her concern shown in the follow up drive around Skipton.
We hope soon to see the installation of “doggie do” disposal stations around the town. We were granted Council funding for the idea. Please ensure you use the bags provided to keep our streets clean.
We also hope to see the installation of a bike rack for tourists and riders stopping at the shops for a break.
Interesting to get some comments on the street from riders and to hear what they want to see provided in Skipton for the security of their bikes, and how to see they impact other footpath users. (The state of those pavements was also on the list of complaints…)
Of greatest interest was the calling of a Public Meeting to form a plan for the future development of the banks of the Mount Emu Creek where it flows through Skipton. (See details on Shire Page).
Corangamite Council has called the meeting, which will be held on Thursday 4th October 2018, at the Skipton Mechanics Hall, 7.30 p.m.
The Skipton Mechanics Hall Committee of Management has been working with our Federal Member Dan Tehan, and representatives from the stakeholders, the Hopkins Glenelg Catchment Management Authority and the Department of Environment who will attend to try to thrash out what can and should be done for the long term future development and how it could be paid for.
We all have ideas, Progress Association is facilitating the meeting, join our members on the floor and lets see what Skipton residents and groups can achieve by working together.
The Public Meeting on Thursday 4th of October is just before the Working Bee which has been called by L/S/C Craig Walker, and will take place on Saturday 6th October. It will provide a good opportunity for you to sign up for that. With so little rain it seems we have to focus on fire risks again, right here in town.
The next meeting of the Skipton Progress Association will be held on Thursday 1st November.
There will be no formal meeting in October as we will be attending the Public Meeting on future development and management of Mount Emu Creek, but please talk to us about what concerns you, and remember all of Skipton is welcome at our meetings .

SKIPTON GOLF &
BOWLS CLUB Last Tuesday, Skipton Primary School
students from Prep to Grade 2 spent a
lovely afternoon of bowls and golf at
the Club.
What a great opportunity for our
children to get a taste of these sports, as
well as to use the town’s facilities and
get coached by our local athletes.
A special mention to our ex-cleaner,
Glenis, who came out to Skipton
especially for the occasion.
Glenis is the Club President and is a
well recognised champion of both golf
and bowls and together with other
bowlers helped to teach the children
the finer points of the great game.
Glenis shows the kids how it’s done.
Frank Ellingham demonstrates his
expertise.
With a couple of extra
pointers from Bev Grist
the students learnt lots
about how to play bowls
using a smaller bowl for
their smaller hands.
The Bowls Season will
start soon with pennant
teams for both the mid-
week competition and Saturdays as
well. There is always a warm welcome
for new members to the club and with
teams to select soon, a great time to
come along and join the local bowling
club.
The facilities at the Skipton Bowling
Club are fantastic. You will enjoy all
that the club has to offer.
Phone: 5340 2054 and leave a message
if interested and someone will get back
to you. Additional handy tips about putting down a

Greetings from the
Lake Bolac Eel Festival Kuyang Lapakira In the spirit of cross-promoting other like-minded festivals in our region, we are circulating details of the Waking the Giants Festival to be held at Mount Elephant, Derrinallum 12-14 October 2018.
Entries are invited for a Postcard Art Exhibition and the program of events can be found on their website - https://wakingthegiants.weebly.com/program.html
The two majestic woven sculptures depicting a brolga and an emu created during the 2018 Lake Bolac Eel Festival – Kuyang Lapakira have been invited to make an appearance there.
These ambassadors for the Lake Bolac Eel Festival are currently ‘on tour’ around Victoria. Until 30 September they are in residence at the Ararat Gallery TAMA (Textile Art Museum Australia), which has just reopened following a major redevelopment. This follows them taking part in the Surf Coast Arts Trail at Torquay in August.
The sculptures were created by Gunditjmara master weaver Bronwyn Razem and Natimuk sculptor Dave Jones, with the assistance of students from Lake Bolac College and members of the Eel Festival audience.
The project was supported by Regional Arts Victoria. The sculptures were finished with community input during a Weaving Circle led by Bronwyn Razem on site during the Eel Festival.
The Weaving Circle was facilitated by Ararat Gallery
TAMA in partnership with the Lake Bolac Eel Festival.
Kind regards from All at the Eel Festival Kuyang Lapakira Enquiries: festival@eelfestival.org.au and on Facebook
We acknowledge the Djabwurrung as the traditional custodians of the land where the Festival is held & pay respects to elders past, present and emerging.

Corangamite Shire is again presenting movies at
the Theatre Royal in Camperdown.
Films to be screened include the Hugh Jackman
musical ‘The Greatest Showman’ on Thursday
27 September and animated feature ‘Tad the Lost Explorer
and the Secret of King Midas’ on Thursday 4 October.
Manager Growth and Engagement Rory Neeson said the
screenings would be a great opportunity for families to
enjoy great films locally on the big screen.
“Kids, get your friends together and make a day out of it,”
he said. “These shows are always great fun and a fantastic
opportunity to get out without spending much money.”
‘The Greatest Showman’ brings all the glitz and
glamour of the big top to the big screen. It tells the
story of P.T. Barnum who founded the circus they
called The Greatest Show on Earth. It stars Hugh
Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca
Ferguson and Zendaya.
‘Tad’ is a 3D animated adventure with the voices of Ariel
Winter and Cheech Marin. It’s about an awkward explorer
who has to rescue his beloved from a villain looking for
King Midas’ treasure.”
Mr Neeson said there was no charge for entry and food and

Goldwind Appoints Keppel Prince Engineering for major tower contract for Stockyard Hill Wind Farm.
Keppel Prince Engineering (KPE) based in Portland Victoria, has secured a major tower supply contract with Goldwind for the Stockyard Hill Wind Farm, located 35 km west of Ballarat in Victoria.
Goldwind Australia’s Managing Director, John Titchen said Goldwind is very pleased to announce another partnership with Keppel Prince Engineering for the local production of tower sections.
“Goldwind and Keppel Prince Engineering have a solid history of tower production for our Australian projects, for the White Rock Wind Farm in northern NSW recently, as well as Gullen Range Wind Farm and Morton’s Lane Wind Farm.
“Keppel Prince Engineering will be supplying the equivalent to 28 towers for the Goldwind turbines to be installed at the Stockyard Hill Wind Farm. This is an ideal amount to suit Keppel Prince Engineering’s current capacity.
“This contract follows substantial work by Goldwind and Keppel Prince
Engineering to develop a competitive local tower solution,” Mr Titchen said
Keppel Prince Engineering General Manager, Mr Steve Garner said he was very pleased to be continuing to work with Goldwind and commends Goldwind’s ongoing commitment to creating and maintaining local jobs for the industry.
“Goldwind continues to support local jobs and Keppel Prince Engineering are extremely pleased to partner with the team for the construction of the largest wind farm in Australia. We look forward to working on more projects into the future,” said Mr Garner.
Construction of Stockyard Hill Wind Farm commenced recently. It is expected to create up to 300 jobs during construction peaks on site and employ up to 25 permanent maintenance staff once the wind farm is complete.
Once operational, Stockyard Hill Wind Farm will produce clean energy to power approximately 391,000 Victorian homes.

least the families involved , they wash ,

every bump and urge every kick onto its target.
Congratulations to you all.
Our presentation day on Sunday was very well attended with
the success of the Under 15s setting the tone for the day. A lot
of work went into the day, starting with Kelvin firing up the
spit roasts and Alistair vacuuming the social rooms in
preparation. Lucky they were on hand early! Thanks guys.
People rolled in to see the votes counted, awards presented
and our victorious premiership side receive three cheers.
Thank you to all the team of helpers for the magnificent
lunch, especially the families for supplying salads and
deserts. The day was a fitting end to a much more satisfying
year than the previous one, with plenty of good humour and
optimism about next year.

resulting in a quick goal. We had many great contributors on
the day, but so many times these two players combined to
set Skipton on the path to victory. With the ball being forced
forward so often this opened up opportunities for our
forwards , Harry Wills in particular making the most of his
chances, kicking 7 goals and unselfishly sharing other
chances, an effort that saw him rewarded with the umpires
vote for the best on the ground. Congratulations Harry!
Another great part of the game to watch was not just the run
and carry of Blake Scott, but his outstanding pressure on the
opposition and especially his crunching but fair tackles that
resulted in quite a few turnovers our way.
Gordon were restricted two goals for the game but that
doesn’t mean the back line had nothing to do, many
opposition forward thrusts were repelled by the close
checking and tight disciplined defence of our back line.
This was a day when everyone contributed, and while I have
mentioned a few players, the old cliché “ team effort”, would
apply just as easily.
Our Skipton’s Under 15s are an extremely talented group of
lads , who now have a bond of achievement and mateship to look back on with pleasure for years to come. Well done
boys!
I have previously mentioned the support, but to see hundreds
of people around the team after the final siren, all with big
smiles on their faces brought a tear to the eye, and left no one
in any doubt about the strength, passion and commitment of
the Skipton Football Netball Club.
A big thank you and congratulations go to our coach Kelvin
Scott and his able assistant Al Wills. The skill you showed in
guiding this team through the year was exceptional, the
reward at the seasons end would not have been possible
without your careful development of the talent you had on
hand , and the way you turned talent into team.
Just as important to the side were the support staff of runner
Mick Sheehan and team manager Dallas Connell, the hard
work of these two is not to be underestimated. Last but not
