INTRODUCTION The term robot comes from the Czech word ‘robota’. A typical robot contains :

a) Movable physical structure

b) A motor

c) A sensory system

d) A power supply

e) A computer brain

HISTORY OF ROBOTS

BASICS Robots spin wheels and pivot jointed segments with an actuator The circuit powers electrical motors and solenoids directly, and it

activates the hydraulic system by manipulating electrical valves Most robots are reprogrammable An LED on one side of the wheel shines a beam of light through

the slots to a light sensor on the other side of the wheel The light sensor reads the pattern of the flashing light and

transmits the data to the computer The computer can tell exactly how far the joint has swiveled

based on this pattern These are the basic nuts and bolts of robotics

MOBILE ROBOTS Mobile robots stand in for people in a number of ways. Some explore other planets or inhospitable areas on

Earth, collecting geological samples. The police sometimes use mobile robots to search for a

bomb, or even to apprehend a suspect. Many mobile robots have a built-in balance system (a

collection of gyroscopes)

SNAKE BOTS Snake bots will give scientists an unprecedented look at the

Martian landscape. They can slither into the cracks of the planet's surface. A snakebot could navigate over rough, steep terrain where a

wheeled robotic rover would likely get stuck or topple. A third-generation model of a snakebot being

developed for Mars exploration.

ROBONAUTS Robonauts will be able to spend a limitless amount of time in

space maintaining the space station. Robonaut's hands might have better dexterity than a human

handed inside of a space suit . Robonaut’s replaces the astronauts very successfully. In 1997, the Pathfinder rover provided scientists with

unprecedented detail of the Martian atmosphere and surface.

EXO SKELETONS Basically, an exoskeleton is a wearable machine

that gives human enhanced abilities. Exoskeletons will give soldiers the ability to

move faster while carrying more weight. U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

(DARPA) is investing $50 million to develop an

exoskeleton suit for ground troops.

EXO SKELETONS

ROBOT SURGERY These aren't true autonomous robots that can perform surgical

tasks on their own, but they are lending a mechanical helping hand to surgeons.

Remote control and voice activation are the methods by which these surgical robots are controlled

So far, these machines have been used to position an endoscope, perform gallbladder surgery and correct gastroesophogeal reflux and heartburn.

FUTURE OF ROBOTICS & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Today's AI machines can replicate some specific elements of

intellectual ability. Learning robots recognize if a certain action (moving its legs in

a certain way, for instance) achieved a desired result (navigating an obstacle).

The robot stores this information and attempts the successful action the next time it encounters the same situation.

FUTURE OF ROBOTICS & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE In the future the robots will be able to think independently like

humans with the help of artificial intelligence. Presently the Honda ASIMO robots can make movements

faster and also can interact.

CONCLUSION Robots have common place today in developed

nations, & are used widely in many domestic as

well as industrial purposes. May be by 2035 both humans & robots can walk

together on the earth.
