Introduction

• The TCP/IP protocol suite is the fundamental basis of the Internet.

• the current Internet Protocol i.e. IPv4, is facing an important

transition that will enable it to grow beyond its current limitations

i.e. transition from IPv4 to IPv6

Features• New header format

• Large address space

• Efficient and hierarchical addressing and routing

infrastructure

• Stateless and stateful address configuration

• Built-in security

• Better support for prioritized delivery

• Extensibility

IPv6 against IPv4

• Source and destination address is 128 bits.

• Fragmentation is done only by sending host.

• Header does not includes a checksum.

• No broadcast addresses are used to send traffic.

• Does not require manual or DHCP configuration.

• Must support a 1280-byte packet size.

IPv6 Address Syntax

• Steps:– the 128-bit address is divided along 16-bit

boundaries.– each 16-bit block is converted to a 4-digit

hexadecimal number and separated by colons

Structure of IPv6• Structure of IPv6 consists of :– IPv6 Header– Extension Headers– Upper Layer Protocol Data Unit

Conclusion

• There’s no doubt that IPv4 is going to be replaced by

IPv6. The only question is when as of recent news that

the assignment of last pool of IPv4 addresses has

commenced on 3rd February, 2011, i.e. the exhaustion

process has begun.

• As the pool of available addresses is quickly shrinking.

The real solution is a new IP address standard.
