4.341 / 4.342 Introduction to Photographyand Related Media

Through readings, projects, lectures, artist visits, group discussions and field trips, this course intro-duces students to the history of photography and the use of images in contemporary art practices. It fosters, both theoretically and practically, visual literacy and understanding of photography—from analogue to digital imaging.

The course provides practical instructions in the fundamentals of various camera formats, film exposure and development, black and white dark-room printing, and digital imaging. Readings, film screenings and assignments addressing specified topics allow students to explore a range of tradition-al, contemporary and experimental techniques, to develop technical skills and personal exploration of photography and related media, as well as develop critical awareness of the cultural and technological production of images.

Assignments are continuously presented and discussed in a critical forum. Students are required to produce a final project at the end of the semester.

Students from various disciplines are encouraged to enroll. 35mm and digital SLRs cameras are available for checkout. Limited Enrollment.
