What is Educational Technology?

-is the use of all human inventions and discoveries to satisfy or educational needs and desires for learning. Is the use of technology to support the learning process.

History of Educational Technology

Technology is derived from the greek word Techne, which means (art , skills and craft) it is based on human knowledge and skills.

History of Educational Technology

education technology can be traced back during theancient civilization when man used pointed sticks toinscript signs and symbols on the leaves and on the bark of trees and the time when tribal priest systematized bodies knowledge ,and early cultures invented photographs or sign writing to record and transmit information.

History of Educational Technology

1780 - Early public schools adopt the teacher/manager model with the teacher as the primary manger of instruction and assessment in a single classroom.

1946 - First vacuum tube-based computers developed; universities help in computer development effort; technology used in war effort.

History of Educational Technology

1951 - Little technology used in schools, primarily TV; baby boom begins with resulting increases in class size; first-generation Univac computer delivered to the US census bureau.

1954 - General Electric is the first business to order a computer. Early rock and roll music, based on the rhythm and blues tradition, gains a little in popularity.

1980’s and 1990’s

Produced variety of schools that can be put under the umbrella of the label Computer-based learning(CBL). Frequently based on constructivist and cognitivist learning theories, these environments focused on teaching both abstract and domain specific-problem solving.

2000’s Emerge of multiple mobile and ubiquitous

technologies gave a new impulse to situated learning theoriesfavoring learning-in-context scenarios. Some literatureuses the concept of integrated learning to describe blended learning scenarios that integrated both school and Authentic settings.

Educational Media and it’s Related Terms

Education Media and it’s Related Terms

imparting learning and of providing activities, materials and guidance that facilitates learning in either formal or informal situations.

Education Media and it’s Related Terms

• Educational technology and Instructional technology

- Is a complex, integrated process involving people, procedures, ideas, devices, and organization for analyzing problems and devising, implementing evaluating and managing solutions to those problems, involved in all aspects of human learning

Education Media and it’s Related Terms

• Broadcastng and Mass Media- Covers a wide spectrum of different

communication methods that disseminate information to a large number of recipients via telecom such as television and radio.

Education Media and it’s Related Terms

• Audio, Visual, and Audio-visual Media

- Audio the use of hearing such as radio, audio discs, recordings, language lad, while visual media emphasizes the use of the sense of sight such as use of charts, pictures, boards, diagrams, maps, models etc.

Education Media and it’s Related Terms

• Hardware and Software- Hardware is an equipment and related

electronic and mechanical components while software refers to programs, printouts, or instructional materials that go with the machine.

Education Media and it’s Related Terms

• Print And Non-Print Media- Printed word is used predominantly in

transmitting information.Ex. Grade sheet, manual, hand outs, study

guides, newsletters, books

Contribute of Instructional Media to the Learning Process

1. The delivery of instruction can be more standardized.

2. The Instruction can be more interesting3. Learning becomes more interactive

through applying accepted learning history

4. The Length of time required for instruction can be reduced.

5.Quality of learning can be improved.6.The positive attitude of student towards

what they are learning and to the learning process itself can be enhanced.

7.The Instruction can be provided when and where desired or necessary.

8.The role of the instructor can be changed in the positive directions.

Guidelines in the Selection of Instructional Media

• Determine the needs.• Check a variety of sources.• Obtain and preview the materials.• Try the materials out with students.• Compare any competing materials.• Make your selection.• Keep accurate records.

What is communication ?

-Communication is a process by which you convey your message to someone or a group of people. If the message is conveyed clearly and unambiguously, then it is known as effective communication.

• Physical barriers• Language barriers• Cultural barriers• Emotional barriers• Individual’s barriers

Barriers to communication

• Gender barriers• Lack of Subject knowledge• Stress• Attitudinal barriers• Channel barrier

Reasons for Using Instructional Media in the Classroom

The teacher cannot always explain or show to the class everything by himself because there are topics or lesson that are:

1.Happening too quickly(films, charts, movies, specimens)

2.Too complex to be appreciated (mock-ups, models, diagrams, charts, pictures)

3.Too small to be observed(Telescope, microscope, lens, drawings, films slides, models, pictures)

4.Too dangerous to permit live observation (simulators, films, slides, pictures)

5. Too large to be easily comprehend (models, mock-ups, films, slides, diagrams)

6.Taking place some distance away in time and in spaces (simulators, films, field trips, dramas, slides, pictures)
