INSTRUMENTATION

OVERVIEW

IRT has significant experience in the installation of temporary and permanent monitoring systems for trains, bulk ore carriers, draglines, coal trucks, shovels, etc. Systems for measuring:

• Strain • Deflection • Acceleration (vibration) • Noise • Temperature form the backbone of the Institute’s instrumentation capability.

PERMANENT INSTALLATIONS

• Partially Dumped Ore Car Detector — in service for last 15 years at BHPB-IO on Car Dumper #3.

• Briquette Feed Bin weigh system — Installed at Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant.

• Rail Weighbridge — in service at Brookfield Rail to continuously assess loading of iron ore traffic.

• Rail Temperature and Stress Free (SFT) Monitoring – Permanent site established for Rio Tinto in the Pilbara providing continuous feed of ambient and rail temperatures as well as rail SFT movements.

• Track Condition Monitoring – Over 80 Instrumented Ore Cars in service on iron ore railroads, providing rapid feedback on track condition

• BHPB-IO – Wagon alignment monitoring system

BENEFITS

• Prototyped instrumentation results in optimised final installation.

• Improved maintenance scheduling. • Improved production audit data. • Condition monitoring of wheel fleet. • Improved loading procedures. • Improved process control.
