Race fans might have to wait a little longer to see the breakneck excitement of IMCA racing as this week-end is a washout Th e Raptor Run featur-ing the IMCA Stock cars and trucks and Modifi ed cars were slated to go Sat-urday June 30 and Sunday July 1 at Dinosaur Downs However Tuesday nightrsquos downpour eff ectively sunk any hopes of racing this weekend ldquoIt is postponedrdquo said Drumheller Stampede an Ag Society president Mike Hansen ldquoWe donrsquot have a make up date yetrdquo Parts of the track were lit-erally underwater following the rainstorm and Hansen said they would not be able to dry out the track in time for the races It could be tough to fi nd

a new date to make up the Raptor Run Th e IMCArsquos 2012 schedule is chock full and has races scheduled into mid September Th is doesnrsquot mean there wonrsquot be races in Drumhell-er this summer Tentative IMCA race dates in Drum-heller are on August 18 and 19 and September 8 and 9

Heavy rainfall poses no fl ooding risk

Th e Town of Drumheller is in communication with operators at the Dickson Dam and at this point while the river is higher than residents normally see it there is no risk of fl ooding Drumhellerrsquos director of Disaster Services Ray Ro-manetz and deputy director of Disaster Services Bill Bachynski confi rmed that the Dickson Dam is releas-ing at 160 cubic metres per second and has no plans of increasing fl ows as the majority of snow pack has melted and is not expected to cause any problems ldquoTh e snow pack is gone and the dam is not full so we are in good shape hererdquo said Bachynski Th e dam is presently 78 per cent full and the current fl ow at Drumheller is 265 cubic metres per second ldquoRains received over the last several days has not re-sulted in any concerns regarding fl ows on the Red Deer Riverrdquo said a press release ldquoIf the situation changes as a result of signifi cant rainfall River Forecasting will advise the Town accordinglyrdquo

Some of the arearsquos most talented art-ists will be showing off their work in just over a week Downtown will be fi lled with colour and will look really comfy as a pleth-ora of quilts adorn Centre Street on Saturday July 7 in the third bi-annual Quilting in the Badlands Outdoor Quilt Show Quilters from the Drumheller area and few from further afi eld have been labouring over their art for two years ldquoItrsquos to display the artwork of the lo-cal quilters in and around Drumheller Itrsquos a day of funrdquo said Tara Semchuk owner of Bits amp Pieces Keepsake Quilting Part of Centre Street will be blocked off during the event and the quilts hung up on two clotheslines Down-town merchants will also display many of the quilts During the event there will be a bar-becue and the Royal Alberta Museum will be presenting a history of quilting in Western Canada a new addition to this yearrsquos show Th ere are two ses-

sions with the museum at 11 am and 1 pm ldquoItrsquos a new quilt project the mu-seum has been working on and they just started showing public presen-tations in the last three monthsrdquo said Semchuk Quilting has a long history in North America and itrsquos practitio-ners cite many benefi ts for the hob-by ldquoOf course blankets keep you warmrdquo joked Semchuck ldquoBut itrsquos a hobby many ladies get a lot of grati-fi cation out of Itrsquos a relaxing hobby and they make great giftsrdquo Anyone is welcome to have their quilt displayed Th ose interested can drop off their quilts at Bits amp Pieces Keepsake Quilts on Centre Street anytime before 5 pm Friday July 6 Quilters can request to have their work hung inside or outside Non-quilters are encouraged to attend as well Th e event runs from 10 am to 4 pm Saturday July 7 ldquoCome out take in the sights and everything else going onrdquo said Sem-chuk ldquoTh e quilts will be on display for everyone to enjoyrdquo

Quilting show returns after two year hiatus

Earlier this week Mountain View Helicopters gave our summer reporter a chance to see what a tour is like fi rst hand Th is is a personal account of the experience Having never fl own in a helicopter or any small air-craft for that matter driving out to Horseshoe Canyon where Mountain View Helicopters (MVH) operates I wasnrsquot quite sure what to expect It was a clear day on Monday June 25 a perfect day for fl ying Walking up to the Robinson R44 four-seater helicopter for the fi rst time stirred up the butterfl ies in my stomach Th is is the 10th year of operations for MVH in the Horseshoe Canyon area and the pilots couldnrsquot be hap-pier ldquoItrsquos a thrill of a life time A lot of people havenrsquot been in a helicopter and may have mixed views on the safety of it Irsquoll be honest with you Irsquod rather be in a helicop-ter if my engine ever did failrdquo said Ryan Fornataro a licensed visual reference fi nd (VRF) pilot Th is is because a helicopter is much easier to land in an emergency than bigger aircraft said Fornataro He also said many people believe that if there is an en-gine problem itrsquos game over Th at is just not the case at all because the blades donrsquot stop when the engine does said Fornataro Climbing into the machine I buckled up and put my

headset on which enables passengers to communicate with each other and the pilot Th e engines sounded al-most like a lawn mower when fi red up and the blades began spinning so fast you almost couldnrsquot see them When everything was warmed up and ready to go the helicopter began to lift off the ground At fi rst feeling a little nervous Fornataro assured me there would only be a small amount of that ldquoroller coasterrdquo feeling when gaining altitude He was right Touring over the Horseshoe Canyon is breathtak-ing Th e canyon walls contrasting with the blooming shrubs and green grass caught the eye Cars looked like ants marching along Highway 9 Th e layout of the land were like patches in a quilt and there was a small body of water in the canyon as though it was being held in a soup bowl Streams carved the landscape woven through in an intricate fashion Getting as high as 270 metres in the air and as low as 150 metres the fl ight provided a view from above and some great picture opportunities Fornataro made landing the machine look like a piece of cake Setting it down lightly it was not a rough experience at all Overall the fl ight was less nerve rack-ing than on a commercial jet MVH is a fl ight school based out of Springbank Al-berta and by doing these tours they provide their top graduates with a chance to get fl ying hours MVH has also helped with search and rescue mis-sions that have unfortunately occured in the canyon Chris King who is also a VRF pilot said he recalled a

hiker with a broken leg needing assistance to get out of the canyon MVH was right there to help Flights range from six to twelve minutes and there is room for three passengers in the machine all of who get a window seat Th e shorter tour costs $50 for adults and $40 for children under 12 Th e longer tour costs $100 for adults and $80 for under 12 years Besides tours MVH is operating a ldquosnack shack at the canyon beginning this year For more information on MVH or tours go to mvhe-licom or call (403) 334-4354

The Drumheller Valley is a unique scenic valley created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water

About 65 million years ago dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area Today the fossil-ized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area

The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree who in 1902 built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district

It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911 In 1913 the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine) Midlandvale Rosedale East Coulee Wayne and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things

Today the Town of Drumheller relies on agriculture gov-ernment services oil and gas and tourism for its economic prosperity

Trevor Davies Slave Lake ABWho are you Trevor DaviesWhere are you from Slave Lake ABWhat brings you to Drum-heller My wife and I brought the kids here to see the mu-seum We are actually on our way to Vancouver Island and the boys really wanted to stop here along the way What have you enjoyed so far about the valley Hiking the badlands was really fun Th e coal mine run and the trails at the Tyrrell Museum were pretty cool Is there anything you would change about Drum-heller Some of the maps around town were confus-ing Th e town is very beauti-ful and the people have been extremely nice I canrsquot believe how much Drumheller has

changed since I visited here as a kid Itrsquos grown but the land-scape has remained beautiful For people travelling to Slave Lake what would you tell them to do during their visit Well things are still rebuilding from the forest fi res last summer However the lake is beautiful and there are some really nice cabin spaces there Itrsquos a nice area for camping fi shing and a lot of hiking How has the rebuild been coming in Slave Lake We actually lost our family home to the fi res last year Cur-rently our new house is about 34 of the way done Th e town is slowly coming back and things are going to be good

Mark this date on the cal-endar Dragons fans Th e boys hit the ice on September 7 in this seasonrsquos home opener On Wednesday June 27 the AJHL released the 20122013 schedule Th e Drumheller Dragons will begin the regu-lar season at home and will be facing the rival Calgary Ca-nucks However fans can see the Dragons in action sooner Th e team will be facing the Canucks in their fi rst home preseason game on August 29

Th e Canucks fi nished the 20112012 regular season three points ahead of the Dragons Th e Dragons will also be facing the Olds Griz-zlys and Kindersley Klippers of the SJHL in their pre sea-son Th e pre season games give a chance for many of the Dragons fresh faces to get ac-customed to one another in game situations ldquoItrsquos important to get more games You can practice all day but you need to play against competition Itrsquos get-ting the guys in the best game condition they can by playing as many games as they can Itrsquoll give everybody an op-portunity to get acclimated to each otherrdquo said head coachgeneral manager Brian Cur-ran Th e preseason games espe-cially the extra game against Kindersley will give play-ers time to prove themselves ready for a spot on the Drag-ons regular season roster ldquoAt that time of the year
