characters & marks Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) Optical-character recognition (OCR) Optical-mark recognition (OMR)

Digital camera Images recorded digitally on a disk Images can be downloaded to a computer

Digital video camera Records motion digitally Can take still images as well WebCams

Specialized digital video cameras Broadcast images over the Internet

Graphics Tablets

Digital Notepads

Scanner

Light sensing equipment to translate images of text, drawing, photo into digital form

Types of Scanner

Scanners capture and digitize printed images. There are several types of scanners

Flatbed scannersHandheld scannersSheet-fed scannersDrum scanners

Flatbed scanner

If we talk about scanners, thus we mean usually flatbed scanner. The scan documents (texts, photo, diagrams etc..) are put on a glass plate like a copier, under which a carriage with an exposure item and the read head moves. Then the picture is scanned

Handheld scanner

• Any standalone image scanner that either glides from left to right or top to bottom (depending on the scanner model).

• It allows the user to scan the contents of any books, letters, recipes, bank statements, receipts

Sheet-fed

Item to be scanned is to be pulled into a stationary scanning mechanism

Smaller and less expensive than flatbed scanner

DRUM SCANNER

Item to be scanned rotates around stationary scanning mechanism

Very large and expensiveUsed in the publishing industry.

Scanner Devices

Optical scanner

Bar code readers

Character and Mark recognition

Optical Scanners

Convert text or drawings into machine readable format

Can be displayed, printed, or stored

Bar Code Readers

Photoelectric (optical) scanners that translate the symbols in the bar code into digital code

Read bar codesAlternating black & white vertical barsUniversal Product Code (UPC)

Seen in grocery stores, retail stores

Character & Mark Recognition

Magnetic-ink character recognition (MICR)Optical character recognition (OCR)Optical-mark recognition (OMR)

Magnetic-ink character recognition (MICR)

Reads magnetically encoded characters

Optical character recognition (OCR)

Software convert scanned text from images (pictures of the text ) to an Editable text format (usually ASCII) that can be imported into a word processing application and manipulated

Optical character recognition (OCR)

Example Scan or picture capture of the document: a

scanner or a camera capture the paper document.

The OCR engine extract the text from the image

The text recognized is send to be processed

Optical-mark recognition (OMR)
