Ideas CaféEncouraging wider
student reading
Andy Prue – Templeman Library
The Problem
• Students only engage with Lecturer’s
prescribed reading
• Seemingly no willingness to read
around the subject
The Solution
• The creation of a community; the
Ideas Café
• A place to share the benefits of
wider reading and its application
• No hierarchy, no limits on membership
• The Library as venue
The Outcome
• Establishment of a shared community,
based around the University Library
• Opportunity for wider networking, in a
multi-cultural and multi-positional
environment
• Safe environment to practice
presentation and discussion skills on
any subject of interest
Community
Presentation/Discussions
Lessons Learned Along The Way
• Everyone needs a coffee at 18:00
• Danger of online only
• Need to advertise and market the
group more effectively
Moving Forwards
• Templeman Lecture theatre pre-booked for 2017-2018
• Promotion through student induction sessions
• Advertising & marketing
• Accommodation of Distance-Learners during live events
• Blog/EventBrite (Student/Staff attendance tracking tools?)
