A new floor was installed in the

fantastic new cafeteria and kitchen
without Mrs. Prickel’s leadership and
grant writing ability,” stated Moeller.
Mrs. Prickle has worked at St. Louis
Catholic School for 13 years. The
following examples are just some of
the ways Carla Prickel provides
excellent service to the students and
staff:
Creates a welcoming

Participates on the school
wellness committee
Helps anyone with a special
request
Provides special meals for
various occasions

On May 31, 2017, the Indiana
Department of Education named

Service Employee of the Year.
Prickel is a Cafeteria Manager at
St. Louis Catholic School in
Batesville, Indiana. Prickel received a

of Education and a check for $200
from the Indiana Nutrition Council
during an award ceremony at her
school.

2017 School Food Service Employee of the Year!
In addition, Mr. Moeller included the following quotes from teachers in his nomination.
“Mrs. Prickel is always kind and friendly and helpful. She will drop whatever she is doing to help. She is always
smiling and really seems to enjoy her job.”
“Carla truly cares about our café and everyone who enters it. She takes pride in her work and leads with love.
She keeps teachers and students informed of changes or new foods that they may encounter at lunch. She
brings variety to the café, and kids get to experience foods they may not encounter otherwise. Carla uses
produce from the school garden when available which gives the kids a sense of pride and accomplishment.
She also bends over backwards to make sure that students with food allergies are safe.”
This is the 20th year the Indiana Department of Education has presented this special award. In celebration
of this anniversary, we have updated our School Food Service Employee of the Year Award webpage. For a

Director’s Corner - By Julie Sutton
I hope you enjoyed your summer break and are getting excited for the new school year! Did you get a chance this summer to attend some of our great training sessions? The Culinary trainings were again outstanding and enjoyed by all who attended. We also had training for New Food Service Directors and Food Safety training, both courses provided lots of valuable information. July 1 was the deadline to have your charging policies in place, so make sure households are notified of your policy in writing as they register for school. We are here to support you as you start the new school year. Be on the lookout for new coffee break webinars, and be sure to call your field consultant or our office with any questions you have. We look forward to seeing you at the ISNA fall conference in South Bend, another excellent learning opportunity! Thank you for all you do, have a great year!

Congratulations to South Bend Community
School Corporation for receiving a
2017 USDA Farm to School Grant!
The grant will be used to evaluate current evidence of
existing farm to school activities, develop a Farm to
School Action Plan, and embed farm to school best
practices into school culture. The program will work to
establish a site-managed garden program that has the
potential to support and sustain snacks in the classroom
in the future.
