Maize Cultivation - India

Energy and Protein urgent priority for young and growing population(8.36 mha, 23 mT)

• Dairy growth >5% p.a ( $100 bn by end 2015 )

• Poultry growth 6-8 % p.a ( $150 bn by 2020 )

Area Under maize Fodder Crop - 0.9 mha

Major states, AP, KN, Bihar, TN , MH ,PB,UP etc.

Why Maize is the Future Crop for Indian Agriculture

Maize Cultivation Challenges

Acute Labor Scarcity- Sowing & Harvesting

Primitive Seeding equipment - Non precision Planting – Costly seed loss

Non availability of appropriate intercultural equipment

Non availability -professional corn/cob header

New Holland Maize Solutions- Field

Preparation

Sub Soiler

Advantages

Applications

Breaking hard pan of soil subsurface beyond 18" depth. Use in subsurface drainage /land reclamation/salinity

control Suitability for clayey soils - Corn , sugarcane, cotton belts

Hard Pan Breaking - Better root penetration Improved nutrient uptake by plant Better soil –aeration leads to better germination and crop

growth

Crops: Maize, Cotton, Sugarcane& other deep rooted crops

Hydraulic Reversible MB Plough

Advantages

Applications

Deep Ploughing Inversion of organic matter into soil

Inversion of organic matter – soil enrichment Removal of soil borne insect and pests. Suitable for deep rooted crops for their deep planting

needs like maize , Sugarcane, cotton Reversible plough - Less idle run at the turns

Crops: Maize, Cotton, Sugarcane& other deep rooted crops

Power Harrow

Advantages

Applications

Secondary tillage operation Optimum seed bed preparation Soil-Water-Air Permeability

Vertical soil stirring - air spaces in soil, no pulverization.

Excellent field preparation, up to 9 inch depth Providing excellent granular structure

Crops: Maize, Sugarcane etc

Laser Leveler

Saves 25-30% of Water Improve crop establishment and yield Reduces weed Problem Improves crop Maturity Improve crop uniformity Ease drainage problems Yield enhancement by 20-30%.

Advantages

Applications

All field crops One / two side sloping possible Grading of land for faster drainage

Crop : All crops

New Holland Corn Pneumatic Planter – PL604

One seed at a Place no misses

Saving of costly seed.

No mechanical damage to seed .

Precision in sowing - 10-15% increase in yield.

Uniform depth of sowing -better stand ,better root growth and no waviness-better yield.

Labor saving(also non-availability of labor during sowing season.)

High work rate –economical.

Appropriate distance between seed and fertilizer for optimum plant growth -higher yields.

A Pneumatic precision Planter uses air/vacuum to transportthe seed to furrow opener with precision at uniform depth.

Main Features and Advantages :

Male - female rows distinction and Headland usage

(2-6-1-6-2-6-1-6 configuration)- Hybrid Seed Production

Headland (left unsown, only made the furrows)

- Sowing of female seed is done in these rows

- Rows left unsown for further manual sowing of male seeds

Drive disconnected

Precision in Ridge Planting

Row to Row distance = 24 inches

24 inches 24 inches 24 inches

Ridge planting

Seed to Seed distance = 7 inches

Inter-row Cultivator with fertilizing attachment

Intercultural Solutions

Effective Weed control - improves crop health

Uniform application of fertilizer-high work rate.

Suitability to range of field crops

Crop Care Solutions - Fertilizer Broadcaster

Uniform application of fertilizer, High capacity – labor and cost saving.

Non corrosive sheet metal, rugged frame – durability.

Suitability to all field crops.

Fertilizer Broadcaster

Boom Sprayer

Crop Care Solutions – Boom Sprayer

Uniform spraying of pesticides

Low volume technology to offer better coverage, less chemicals

High clearance

Crop guard to prevent damage to plant body

High work rate – economical

High clearance Tractor

New Holland - Maize Harvesting Solution

Maize Harvester

• First Professional Maize Header

• No damage to grain seed/ capability to harvester under high moisture

Corn Header

• High moisture Harvesting- 28 to 30%

• 4 to 5 row harvesting

• Minimum damage to cob

Cob harvester

New Holland Solution-Fodder Maize harvester

• Row Dependent Used for harvesting of 2 rows of fodder crop simultaneously

• Row Independent Used for harvesting for crops where sowing is not done in appropriate row to row configuration

New Holland Solution-Post harvesting -Forage

Disc Mower-High Speed cutting – labor and time saving.

Wheel Rake-For making windrows wherever baler is to be

used for collection of trash.

Square baler-Make high density square bales of 15 – 30 kg by reduces volume to 1/3.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Precision in critical operation like planting is required to maintain accurate plant population for higher yields

Include Pneumatic Planters and other equipment as Maize mechanization set for eligibility for Subsidy under SMAM.

Alternatively Tractor and planter could be on Planting set maize to be put under subsidy schemes in key states

Extension work by Manufacturers, State Govt. and Agri. Universities .

Skill enhancement training centers at district level for all stake holders, viz farmers, operators, technicians and Agri. Students.
