Increasing our Influence &

Making a Difference Mike Slater

President Elect 2013/14

Well that’s the environment we’re working in. Depressing isn’t it? But what’s the true picture?

In 2012/13, there were 148 workers killed due to accidents at work

About 8,000 cancer deaths and 13,500 new cases of cancer each year could be due to work

“Current trends indicate that by 2060, there will be 13,000 deaths from preventable occupational cancers, if we do nothing”

Lesley Rushton (BOHS Annual Conference 2013):

There are currently approximately 12,000 deaths each year due to occupational respiratory diseases

That’s 33 people per day

Annual deaths from work related respiratory disease are equivalent to 30 Boeing 777’s full of passengers

And there’s another thing we should consider

Accidents at work

Accidents at work Work-related respiratory disease

And there’s more.....

Every year, in all industries, 1.5 million workers suffer from ill health caused or made worse by work

“in the food and drink industries ........ more (civil)claims now result from occupational ill health issues than from safety issues “
